It was a place called Preya. An island that was located in some pocket universe, so I was told. We were all brought there on our own volition, but at low points in our lives, having been promised that we could start a new life, escaping the pain of our present condition. Once there, we told that we could never return home, even if we'd changed our minds. I had risen to one of the highest positions one could have in the local government, but the real rulers of the island were shadowy figures, people nobody had even seen. They gave their instructions and orders through official messages, which I, as one of the Councilmen, would then carry out. There was a contingent of 'rebels' who wanted to return home, and if any were caught, nobody knew what happened to them.
It so happened, that I, along with a fellow Councilman, had come across some information, a discrepancy between the number of arrivals recorded, and the true amount of people who came through the entrance. When we brought it to the rulers' attention, it was dismissed in such a way that we deemed suspicious. My colleague and I decided to pursue the investigation, separately and privately. Then my colleague disappeared. Then my secretary. And others. The rulers gave no explanation as to what was being done to them and where they had gone, but I was convinced that I would be the next to be taken.
Additionally, a very dangerous criminal from my universe, Jim Moriarty, was there. He was under probation for his past crimes, but he convinced his parole officer that he had been rehabilitated. I was to sit at his parole hearing to give testimony that he should not be removed from parole, but on the morning of the court date, I was seriously poisoned and had to be taken to the hospital. Without my testimony, Moriarty was free, and no doubt was rebuilding a crime syndicate in Preya.
The portal brought me to Tumbleweed shortly after I was discharged from the hospital.
It sounds like your version is a bit less stubborn than mine. I've tried to engage in dialogue with your version a couple of times, but
