I read a flyer that said a carnival's coming to town, and the first thing that came to my mind was a novel by Ray Bradbury.

So, basically if the carnival's run by a man named Mr Dark, who promises to fulfill your secret desires, then stay the hell away.

Dude. If someone falls for that, they deserve to have whatever happens to them. I'd read whatever that says, but that's way too much for me to try to figure out.

There's always a few in a the crowd. Also, considering where we are, I wouldn't discount the possibility of some sort of illusion that makes you fall for their line.

Basically, Mr Dark grants your secret desire, but there's strings attached (isn't there always?)

It's a decent book, and there was a movie made in the 80's.

I'm not falling for illusions again. Gaea already ruined my life that way.

Uh. Yeah. Same with favors from the gods.

Maybe the movie. I don't read much. My brain doesn't really do English well. To be fair, it doesn't really do much but Ancient Greek well, but as long as there's not a of reading, it's mostly okay.

I'm guessing you mean the Greek gods. From what mythology I remember, it's pretty much touchy with them. They're an envious, vengeful lot. Gaea, isn't she an Earth goddess?

If you go to YouTube, you can watch the movie there. It's called Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Yes. I mean, the Roman counterparts suck as much as the Greek, but I'm a Greek demigod. Yes. Yes, she is.

Okay. Sounds good.

Which demigod are you? What do you control?

Leo Valdez. Son of Hephaestus. Not really a famous one. Fire, I am awesome at building, I can sense mechanical traps, I'm really good at heat vision? Like in those TV shows where they track things with thermal vision? That's me.

Hephaestus, huh? Human mother? All that sounds like it would really come in handy, especially in a pinch.

I figured that was the case about powers. That's pretty much standard in the myths. Your friends are around?

That's cool. Good that you have friends around, at least. It's hard enough adjusting to this place, but doing it alone would suck.

I’ve adjusted to things alone before. But yeah. Not alone is best.

Huh. Definitely not going there.

Same concept, though. If the carnival ends up being the one in Something Wicked, then they'll be in competition.

Nothing's happened yet. That's not to say it won't, and if we end up in a war between townspeople, we know where to go to first.

Sounds brilliant to me. Something to do.

I guess that's one way of looking at it. I'm not that bored, yet.

Aren't you? There was a flier posted on the board at Starbucks. It's going to be here all week long.

Excuse me for asking, but are you the Doctor?

Do you intend to see for yourself?

Not really.

Maybe? Only if you come along. If it's dangerous, I don't want to go there alone.

Surprising, given your taste for danger. You need only ask for company.

All things considered, it's less fanciful and more realistic, isn't it?

Maybe I'd rather not go it alone.

Let's go. If they have one of those midways where there are games, you can figure out how they cheat and then out them.

I've climbed one, but never ridden one.

You've climbed a roller coaster.

Okay, this is a story I need to hear. I'm assuming this happened in your childhood? Or was it for a case? Either way, it sounds epic.

Both. I was fourteen at the time, investigating an alleged faulty signal within the mechanics of a roller coaster — one of those God-awful travelling amusement parks responsible for countless injuries and deaths. I suspected foul play in that instance, and I was correct. The manager re-configured the ride in order to trip a mechanical failure, thus causing the death of his step-son.

You never cease to amaze me. Fourteen? You were solving crimes at fourteen while I was, I don't know... probably playing rugby with the lads.

Correction: I was running away from home at fourteen. The crime was incidental.

But please, do continue flattering me.

Oh---I don't know---What do I-- Given what you've told me about your parents, I'm not surprised that you ran away.

That purple shirt you wore today looked good on you. Did you buy new cologne?

I just remembered, it looks like I'll be leaving my job at the hospital to work at this clinic that's opening up in town.
