She awoke with a start, and a scream stuck in her throat. For a few seconds, she didn’t know where she was, couldn’t even see the ceiling of her bedroom dimly lit by the day’s early gray sun that peeked around the edge of her curtains. All she could see in her mind was the horror she’d just witnessed, the things she’d just felt, and her stomach rolled with the terrible knowledge. Fighting her way out of her sheets, Wanda’s bare feet hit the floor a moment later and she stumbled once, then straightened and ran from the bedroom and straight into the nearest bathroom. Her knees landed hard enough on the tiled floor to send a jarring pain through her body, but she never felt it as she leaned over the porcelain toilet to empty the remnants of the previous evening’s meal. When she finished, she coughed and flushed the toilet, then sank onto the floor with her head against the wall, she lifted her hands to her face and began to sob. One leg was outstretched and she nudged the door halfway shut, but didn’t bother closing it the rest of the way. Right now, all she could do was try to come to terms with the events she could remember so unbearably clearly. She didn’t want them to be true, but she knew they were. *** By now Sam was pretty well in tune with the rhythms and routines of the house. Maybe none of the other Avengers were from his world, but some of them he’d known for nearly two years now. They were familiar enough. So while he couldn’t say exactly what alerted him that something was off, he took enough notice of the feeling to pause for a moment as he headed back to his and Misty’s room after his early morning run and listen for anything out of place - like the sounds coming from Wanda’s room. Frowning, he backed up a few steps to knock on her door. She was an early riser compared to most people but this still seemed a little too early, and a little too loud about it, as well. “Wanda?” *** It took a moment for her to realize that someone had spoken, but when she realized who it was, Wanda stood. “Sam?” She called out softly, before leaving the bathroom to cross the bedroom, and opening her door. When she saw him, her tears started anew, and the Sokovian stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. “It - it was awful,” she said through the crying, barely able to get the words out. “I don’t want to go back. Ever. Anything is better than that.” *** Woah. It wasn’t the first time someone had basically flung themselves into his arms - these things happened when you worked in a helping profession and spent most of the rest of your time doing something that resulted in a fair amount of tragedies - and he reacted physically by hugging her back before he caught up to what was happening mentally. A memory dump. Shit. Those were rarely good… and if Wanda had had one, chances were she wasn’t the only one. She was the only one awake and present right now, though, and he gave her a bit of an extra squeeze before pulling back slightly to give her a concerned look. “Supervillain or more politics?” In his experience either was entirely possible. It wasn’t always the fight itself that did the damage when the hero community argued, but what happened afterwards, and he felt his gut tighten a little as he remembered Steve’s funeral. God, he hoped it wasn’t something like that. *** One hand lifted to wipe at her eyes when he drew back a bit, and she took another few seconds to catch her breath, fighting against the waves of grief so she could respond. “Thanos,” she finally said, then almost flinched as though he would appear just from her saying his name. Wanda swallowed hard, then lifted her eyes to meet Sam’s. “He came to Earth. He sent others first - his children? Then he came and he had the Stones, and he took Vision’s and he…” She shook her head, not wanting to put what happened next into words. She’d had the strangest feeling just before waking up, as though something was happening to her, and she didn’t want to think about that right now. “He snapped his fingers.” *** Okay, that was worse. That was definitely worse. He knew that in theory Thanos hadn’t always acted against Earth, but that was in the distant past, well before his time. No, he was familiar with Thanos for other reasons. Like killing Rhodey and being the spark that ignited the last clash of heroes. And being part of Namor’s Cabal of crazy people. And that time when he’d gotten hold of the Infinity Gems and destroyed half the universe. Yeah, he knew exactly what Wanda was talking about, and apparently it was too much to hope that some of the more universe-breaking aspects of his world weren’t reflected in theirs. “Fuck,” he muttered. He wanted to ask more questions, to see if she knew what had happened afterwards, but right now it wasn’t a pressing matter - Thanos wasn’t here, there was no immediate danger, and this was definitely something that people were going to be hashing out endlessly later on. For now he just hugged her again, resting his chin on top of her head. “It can be undone. I can’t promise it will be, but I can promise it’s happened before. There’s always a chance.” *** Wanda tightened her arms when he pulled her in for another hug, closing her eyes as she rested her cheek on his chest against tears that wanted to fall again. “I hope you are right. So much.” Letting out a soft breath, she was quiet for a few minutes, before she finally spoke again. “He ripped the Mind Stone from Vision’s head. I destroyed it and - he turned back time and ripped it from him. There was nothing I could do to stop him. We were in Wakanda and it was all for nothing. Thanos couldn’t be stopped.” *** Sam was American through and through - hell, he was Captain America - but he couldn’t deny he felt some kind of way about Wakanda too. Probably shouldn’t be a surprise that things had gone down there again. He just hoped the damage wasn’t too bad. He caught himself on that thought; most likely half the universe was dead right now, it hardly mattered whether Wakanda’s infrastructure was a little bit messed up. T’Challa might not even still exist. Steve. His own double. Was it a blessing or a curse that they were stuck here with no way of acting, no way of knowing how things would turn out but to wait and see if the portal deigned to give someone the memories of it? Either way was probably bad enough, and he was by far the least invested of any of them. “What do you need today? I can take off from work.” He probably should anyway, but if Wanda wanted him to just keep her company then he could do that. Everything else would still be there later. *** Wanda didn’t want to be a burden to anyone, least of all Sam, but she found herself nodding against him, wanting nothing more than to hide away even though she knew that wouldn’t be possible. “Da - yes,” she replied softly, then lifted her head again. “Can you stay home today? I do not want to be alone.” And with Clint gone a few days earlier, it seemed as though Sam was the one she was closest to, and she didn’t want to feel that sense of loss about him just now. *** “Totally,” he confirmed. Fridays were mostly about meetings and finishing up any paperwork that could get done before the weekend anyway, and one of his coworkers should be able to handle most of that. “I’ll just go leave a message, yeah? It’ll only take a few minutes.” Well, that and make sure that Misty hadn’t had the same new memories. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if she had, so for now he was just going to hold onto the hope that she was still as clueless as he had been half an hour ago. At least neither of the kids were at risk. *** Wanda nodded, and finally let Sam go so she could wipe her face. “I will meet you in the kitchen.” That was her favorite room in the house, to be honest. She enjoyed cooking, and knew Sam did as well, and in general Wanda felt safer there than anywhere else. “I will clean up first, and then I’ll be there.” She still needed to brush her teeth from what had happened when she first awoke, and she wanted to wash her face as well. The memories weren’t fading into dreams, but they were at least slightly dulled as she strove to focus on her friend. *** “We’ll cook a huge breakfast.” He mustered up a bit of a smile, though it wouldn’t really convince anyone who knew him. Bad guys, maybe - he wasn’t the type to joke around much in a fight - but not those he hung out with in his downtime. He pulled the door closed behind him as he ducked out to give her some privacy, and to hide the way his shoulders sagged a little once he was alone in the hallway. For all he could say that it was possible to fix this, the fallout was still going to be bad. |
