Who: Squall and Rinoa
What: Squall has had enough of being babied by Rinoa so he decides to show her he’s fine.
Where: Their cabin
When: Saturday, Feb. 3.
Rating: C for cute with a fade to black at the ends. They also get a bit handsy before said fade to black.
Squall knew that Rinoa was just looking out for him, wanting him to heal fully. But her avoiding being close to him did hurt a little. He had endured far worse injuries when fighting the possessed Edea and even training to become a SeeD. So finally, enough was enough. He had sought out some advice from the others before deciding a nice, somewhat romantic evening with just the two of them would be good.
So before Rinoa returned to their room, Squall had done his best to make the room look cozy and a bit intimate. Given how painful it was to take shirts on and off over his head he had opted for button up shirts. And once the room was set, he undid the buttons of his shirt and got himself comfortable on the bed before he started browsing the movie selection.
Ever since the attack on Atlantis, Rinoa has been sticking very closely to Squall and Rukia. She had mostly hovered over them without any desire whatsoever to go anywhere or do anything. Even if she had healed much of his wounds, she had been so scared to touch him or to be too rough with him. She saw every little wince, every single movement that might indicate he was still hurting, and so she held back on being too physical. She didn't want to make it worse and she didn't want to be the cause of his pain.
She had gone out briefly to get some food and popcorn and upon returning, found her way through the cabin. Even in her worry she could still appreciate how nice this ship was. With containers in hand she headed into their room, using a finger to open the door. She smiled happily when she saw him before kicking off her shoes. “Find anything good?” She handed him one of the containers before climbing onto the bed with her own. She sat as close to him as she dared. There wasn't any space between them but she didn't cuddle up next to him like she normally would.
He took the container and placed it within easy reach. When she didn’t get any closer he mentally sighed. So he was going to have to initiate this. Prove to her she wouldn’t hurt him if she curled up closer to him. So when she seemed settled he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and tugged her closer against him. It hurt a little but he was able to keep it from showing.
“Nothing that really caught my eye but I think you might like one of them,” he said, gesturing towards the movies he had figured they’d might like. He gave her a soft smile that only she could bring out from him. “What kind of snacks did you get?”
Like a hawk, Rinoa watched his face as he tugged her closer. Worry was etched all over hers, but he appeared fine. Okay, maybe she was overreacting now. Maybe he really was fine and she could stop worrying so much. Or maybe he was faking it and she had every reason to worry. She felt her anxiety levels begin to climb as that thought entered her head. Even so, he was pulling her closer and she wasn’t going to refuse. Instead of backing away, she rested her head on his shoulder.
“Hmm, I’ll look through it,” she said thoughtfully as she picked up the remote and began searching through the movies. “Chicken lo mein, egg rolls, and popcorn as promised.” She stopped on a movie that looked interesting and reading through the description. “How about this one? It’s called The Matrix.” She had a feeling he’d agree to anything she chose, but she waited for his response nonetheless.
A blind man could have seen the worry on Rinoa’s face. At least that’s what Squall thought. He hated seeing her worry. As she browsed the movies he got out some of the food. “That’s fine,” he agreed. He handed her some of the food before he kissed her cheek softly. “You do know that you don’t have to worry so much about me, right? I’m fine.”
All it took was his agreement and Rinoa pushed the play button. She wore her emotions on her sleeve, that’s for sure, but Rinoa had damn good reason to be worried. She took the food and smiled gently. “I’m always going to worry about you, Squall.” Which was true. There hadn’t been a day that went by before he arrived that she didn’t worry about how he had been doing back home. Was he okay? Were their friends okay? Was he eating, sleeping? Had he been injured in a fight against a random monster? Now she had more reason to worry. She was glad he was healing, but she felt like she needed to give him that space to allow him to heal.
“I know you do. But you know I’ve had worse injuries than some bruised ribs.” There were still nights where he would sometimes wake up, clutching his chest where the ice spike had impaled him in his shoulder. But what stayed with him was falling from that float and staring up at Rinoa’s face, staring down at him. He had thought for certain that would have been his end. So waking up in D-District Prison in Galbadia had been a bit of a shock.
“I can take a bit of cuddling though. That’s not going to break me,” he teased gently, his dark eyes playful and teasing. “In fact it could help aid my recovery.”
Rinoa frowned as she remembered worse injuries than this. “True, but you need time to heal and you’re not going to heal if I’m all over you.” As much as she would have liked to have been all over him. And maybe she didn’t mean it the way it might have sounded. Or maybe she did. She just hated the thought of making things worse than they already were.
She looked at him very seriously. “Maybe. Or maybe it’ll make it worse.” She was exceptionally stubborn when she set her mind to something. Right now she just wanted him healed and she felt that putting her hands on him too much might break him.
He sighed, rubbing his forehead where his scar was. “You won’t make it worse Rinoa. I’m not a fragile doll you’re going to break by handling too much.” He looked at her, his face serious. “Stop pushing me away because of an irrational fear of rebreaking a rib or something.” His voice was firm but his tone pleaded for understanding.
Rinoa frowned as he spoke, her forehead wrinkled. Her eyes glanced down for a moment as she let the words sink in. She hadn't meant to push him away. She thought she had been doing him a favor by not smothering him, literally. She finally nodded slowly and responded in a small voice, “Okay.”
His face softened and he reached up, cupping her face with his hand. “I love you Rinoa.” He tugged her closer and gave her a soft kiss. When they broke apart he gently nuzzled her head with his. “Nothing is ever going to change that, okay? Promise.”
Rinoa made eye contact with him again but this time instead of worry it was surprise that shown on her face. She allowed him to pull her closer and for that brief moment she kissed him back. She smiled softly and nodded, “I love you, too.”
Carefully shifting (and keeping the slight bit of pain off of his face), he drew Rinoa onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her. “I’m not planning to let you out of my arms tonight,” he said, a bit oblivious (or perhaps not) of how his words could be taken. “I’ve missed holding you.”
Rinoa fought that voice in her head that kept saying she needed to be careful. She instead tried to keep Squall’s at the front of her mind so that she could be close to him without feeling like she was hurting him. She draped an arm over his shoulders as she looked at him, running her fingers through his hair with her other hand. “So have I,” she said quietly.
He’d never admit to it, but feeling Rinoa run her fingers through his hair was one of his favorite things. It was a reason (apart from how he liked it) he kept his hair the length it was. It let Rinoa toy with his hair whenever they were curled up together. “Good,” he murmured, his dark eyes staring up at her with desire. Yes he had only recently said aloud how he truly felt about her (to him actions spoke louder than words) but they had been together for over two years now. Rinoa was the only one for Squall.
“I love you Rinoa.”
Rinoa probably would have poked a little fun at him if she had known that. She would have teased him for keeping his hair that length just for her, but truly she would have been so touched he had done that for her. She smiled gently. Of course she had missed being close with him over those days, even if it meant to her that she was allowing him to heal. It didn’t feel good keeping her distance, and she felt a little frustrated that she wouldn’t allow for more closeness during that week.
“I love you, Squall,” she said quietly. She grinned then, “I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing you say that.” She had waited a long time to hear him admit that allowed, even if she had known all that time. But it was nice to hear the words.
Rinoa really was one of the only people who could tease him and poke fun at him without him minding too much. It was just something that she did and he viewed it as a sign of affection. He smiled back at her words and nuzzled her head with his. “Sorry it took me so long to actually say it,” he murmured. But again, she knew him. She understood his mindset probably better than anyone, even Quistis and Ellone.
“I’ll try to say it a bit more,” he added. Not that he’d probably say it publically where people could see. He didn’t want anyone with ill intentions to think that they could use Rinoa to get to him. He just wanted her to stay as safe as possible. Shifting his hands, he slipped them under her shirt to rest his bare hands against the small of her back, a small warm smile on his face as he stared up at her.
Squall was the one constant in her life that she couldn’t imagine living without. Those weeks when she had arrived in Tumbleweed had been next to unbearable and his arrival had been one of the happiest days of her life. She might have felt silly for how sad she had become before his arrival, but when she thought about it it made sense. She had gone from seeing him constantly, every day, to no contact whatsoever. No one could blame her for being sad then. Now, even with his injuries, she was happy.
She gently nuzzled her nose against his for a moment before kissing him. This was the side only she got to see. It was a side she loved more than anything, because she was lucky enough to be the one to see it. Her cheeks flushed suddenly when she felt his hands slide beneath her shirt, his fingers against her back. “Squall,” she whispered, maybe a hint of protest in her voice, but she made no movement to stop him.
When Squall had been brought to Tumbleweed, he had been overjoyed to learn that Rinoa was there. Granted that joy had faded to worry when he learned that she had been there for weeks. But she was okay so he had begun to adjust to life in Tumbleweed. He was glad too that she had Angelo here. The canine was probably Rinoa’s most loyal friend.
Seeing her blush a bit he smiled (dare it be said with a bit of playfulness?) but left his hands where they were. “What’s wrong?” he asked. He didn’t move his hands, not wanting to unless Rinoa gave her consent to do so. But he had missed her and he did want to be close to her. And after two years, he knew in his soul that he would never be with anyone but Rinoa.
Whatever time she had spent alone had been forgotten. It was as though he had always been there. Angelo had been good company her entire life and the dog would always be her most treasured companion, apart from Squall. The three of them were a family.
She shook her head slowly, “I just… I don't want you to strain yourself,” she said quietly. A different way of saying she didn't want to hurt him. However, she still didn't move. Her fingers still played idly with his hair as she gently bit her lip.
He used his hands to tug her closer on his lap, his head tilting just a bit into her fingers. “I promise I won’t.” A hand slipped from her back and reached up, brushing his thumb over her lips. “But I love you and want us to spend the rest of our lives together. There’s no one else I want to kiss or be with.” He wasn’t really sure on how to say what he wanted to do in the bedroom given he’d never really done anything like that before (yes he had read books but reading and practical application were two different things).
Those words hit her like a ton of bricks. There wasn't anyone else in all the universes who Rinoa would rather be with than Squall. She pressed her lips against his more deeply this time. After a few moments she broke the kiss and breathed, “I want to be with you, too.” There was longing her voice, want. Very carefully, her hands slid down to pull at his shirt as though asking permission to remove it.
He returned the kiss just as deeply, sliding his hands free from her so the shirt could be removed. Having a button up shirt on was definitely a good call. The thought was back in his mind about it. But his more direct thoughts were on Rinoa and working on getting her own top off. He knew they could do this. He had faith Rinoa would be careful with is ribs with what they both seemed to want. He pulled back and stared at her, wanting to make sure she was okay with this before things got anymore heated.
Rinoa took over her own shirt and slipped it off over her head with ease. It was tossed somewhere out of sight. She leaned back in against him and kissed him again. Those should have been enough indications that she was okay with taking this further. The movie had long since been forgotten, her focus entirely on him.
The movie and food were currently the last thoughts on his mind. Instead his sole focus was on the beautiful young woman in his arms kissing him. Which he happily returned. His arms slid around her and he let his hands roam her back, enjoying how her skin felt under his hands. He slowly leaned back and tugged her down on top of him. He had no qualms in letting her dictate the pace right now. Even if they didn’t do more than just an intense make out session he was happy. Rinoa saw now that he would break from her touches.
