Finn wasn’t really sure what to think of everything. Lunch with Poe could just be a friend thing. Really, he wasn’t sure if it wasn’t. He might have wanted it to be something that was more than friends, but it wasn’t like it would probably go that way if he didn’t say anything. He wondered if it was going to make things worse, keeping something from Poe for this long. Only keeping secrets about feelings tended to be less offensive than secrets about other things. But he’d looked around to see where it might be good to get lunch. There wasn’t much out in Atlantis for food, but they could either eat on the ship and then go exploring or just get stuff to go on the ship and go exploring and eat there. It had been awhile since they’d done anything like a picnic and Poe wouldn’t really remember that. The view was probably worth it. So when Poe turned up, he suggested grabbing some food from the buffet and taking it with them. There was so much still that he hadn’t seen and Finn wanted to be able to see it with Poe. Also not knowing if it was anything more than friendly meant he had exactly no idea if getting a reservation for one of the restaurants on board would make things weird or not. He could really only speculate so much about what sort of a lunch thing Poe was looking forward to, but he didn’t think that it would hurt to go the route that he did. And maybe it’d give them time to talk about things. Maybe he’d manage to figure out a way to tell him about before. Even if Poe wasn’t interested, it didn’t mean they’d stop talking. Poe wasn’t like that. He’d picked somewhere up near the top so they could look out over the water. True, they’d been doing that for a while, but it also had the added benefit of being mostly secluded except for a few people passing by. “What’s your favorite thing you’ve done since you got here?” Because he was curious and it was something easy to talk about. The casual location wasn't a terrible thing so far as Poe was concerned, particularly since the revelation that Finn and Rey weren't a thing had caught him a bit off guard and he was left trying to figure out what and how to proceed with Finn. All right, that made it sound as if Finn were a mission or a project somehow, and obviously he wasn't that, but Poe liked him. And while normally he wouldn't hesitate to make that like apparent, for some reason in this case he was holding back. Maybe cause he didn't want to disrupt something good with him and Rey and Finn and they did have something good. But right now, it was just him, and Finn, and lunch, and the opportunity to maybe suss out some of the situation a little further. "Man, I don't know," Poe chuckled. "I'm not really used to just relaxing like this, so it's been a bit odd not having a purpose or plan. Even at home, we've got the whole airline project, but here…" he spread a hand out. "I guess the best thing so far has been being here at Atlantis. At least it's exploring new things. What have you done that I must try out?" He reached for a fork to punctuate the question with a bite of food. Finn smiled at that. “I guess I’m not really that used to this sort of thing either. I mean, even in Chicago we had some things to fight or things that happened that made things unusual.” He liked it, though. At least some of it. He’d had more fun than he expected swimming. The gills had been kind of weird, though. “I do miss the airline project.” He missed living with Rey and Poe. He didn’t mind Wanda and Vision, but he didn’t really know them too well, which was probably his own fault. He was glad that Poe couldn’t read minds because his first thought had been about kissing him, which he wasn’t sure he should say. And he hadn’t done that here. There’s some cool things to see in the museums. I liked the market, too.” He shrugged. “Most of the things that I’d say you should try, though, I did in Chicago. Like the ferris wheel. Have you been in a ferris wheel before? Rollercoasters are fun, too.” "Can't say I have been although I think I've seen them on the television," Poe shrugged. "Maybe we should see about something like that if we get the chance although I don't know if they've anything like that here. I haven't been paying attention to it. Tell me more about Chicago, what was it like there?" He took a bite out of his food, and leaned forward slightly so that he was closer to Finn, even if he was trying not to be too obvious with any of this. But he was interested in Finn, interested in what he'd done in Chicago, and interested in getting to know him better - and in getting to know the differences between their two lives a little better as well. That was harmless enough, right? Finn felt himself getting closer to what could end with him revealing more than he was trying to. He probably needed to stop worrying about what would happen and find out what would happen. Only he couldn’t manage to get the words out. “Well, you already know we lived together. I worked on one of those trash trucks. It wasn’t too bad. I got to see the city in the early morning and it was kind of interesting.” He wasn’t sure that was really the way to get someone to think you were attractive though. Trash smelled pretty bad. “Uh. I guess there was a lot. We tried a lot of restaurants together. Well, the other you and I. Sometimes Rey, too.” He was really glad at that moment that he couldn’t really blush or at least it wasn’t noticeable. “We did a lot of things, I guess.” He shrugged, trying to act nonchalant. Like his mind wasn’t reminding him of some of those things at this moment. “It was really nice. Just getting to go around the city together. There was a lot more to do there. Music festivals and food festivals. We didn’t really get around to any concerts, but we could have. More museums than they have in Tumbleweed. Nothing about dust. Art and all sorts of things. I’d never seen art before. It’s kind of amazing what people can think up. I didn’t understand it at first because I’d never thought of much besides what I was doing. But I guess it makes more sense now. I like the ones with a lot of color. It’s too bad Tumbleweed doesn’t have much. I guess we could visit somewhere once the plane is up and running.” He felt his face heat up. “I mean...if you wanted to.” "Guess it's a larger city all around," Poe said agreeably. "Tumbleweed isn't exactly a major metropolis so it'd make sense there'd be more of that with art and museums and the like." Poe had come from a planet without much in the way of a metropolis so he couldn't say he minded Tumbleweed being in the middle of what sometimes felt like nowhere, but at the same time, he'd enjoyed the times he'd been on Hosnian Prime, back before the First Order had destroyed all of that. And he suspected there was some local culture he was missing by having not explored further afield. The idea of doing so, and the idea of doing so with Finn brought a smile to his face. "I'd love that. We've got the plane, all we'd have to do is figure out the flight path and the fuel, stop-over points, that sort of thing. It'd be good flight logging practice, even. When we get back, let's do it - you and me." It occurred to him that Finn might have meant all of them. He reached for a drink to try to backtrack slightly. "Rey too, if she wants it. Really, I guess if they want it - we could invite both Rey's. But uh, yeah, I'd like to do that." Finn felt himself smiling. Poe had agreed. Of course, he blinked when Poe suggested taking the Reys with them. Not that he didn’t want to go with them, but...but he’d wanted so very much to have it be just them. “Oh. Yeah.” He chewed nervously on his lip, looking over at Poe quietly for a moment. “I guess if they want to come. But then we could always take them a different time, too. For the flight logging practice.” Not just so that Finn could keep Poe to himself for one thing. Definitely thinking about the flight logging practice. Totally thinking about it. He reached for a bit more of the food before letting his gaze shift out over the water and the city of Atlantis. “I can show you some of our favorite food places, too. If they’re still there. We could make a weekend of it or something. If you wanted.” He wasn’t sure. “I have money from Christmas. We could afford it.” And it was for a worthy cause. At least Finn was pretty sure that it was worth it. “Maybe you can even try the ferris wheel...or some of the hiking trails.” Poe glanced up at Finn. That felt like a diversion to just have a trip with the two of them. Because while flight logging practice was certainly something that they could use, he and Rey were both licensed at this point so it really wasn't essential to their business. He smiled, slow, but genuinely warm. "Yeah, that's a good idea. Plus, then we have two trips to look forward to." He reached for his drink, tipped it slightly towards Finn. "You have to promise we get to go first so we can figure out what we want to do with them. And at least we can figure out what the Rey that hasn't been to Chicago might like the best." It was a silly thing, really. Their Rey would likely have a good guess of what her other self might enjoy, but he did want Finn to himself for a tip. "I like the idea of this weekend," he nodded and then reached for his fork. "We might have to get you certified to be a co-pilot for me so we could make regular sorts of trips of it." Finn felt momentarily nervous, but the feeling disappeared when Poe said that it sounded like a good idea. He’d hoped it hadn’t been too horribly obvious, but he’d wanted time with Poe to himself. He didn’t dislike the others. He liked spending time with them all. He just...wanted to have time with the other man to himself. Then maybe he could figure out if it was safe to tell him about before. About what happened. “I think that this all sounds good. I think the other Rey would like a few places that my Rey likes.” There was a smile. “But we can find all the best places to take them and it would be great.” When Poe mentioned getting certified to be his co-pilot, Finn lit up. “Yeah! That would be great!” It also meant more time with Poe, which he was basically trying not to be too obvious about, but whatever. It was fine. Poe didn’t seem too suspicious about it. “Guess I can’t really do the gunner thing anyway, so co-pilot works.” "Exactly, there are ships with guns, I guess," Poe knew there were military planes that had that sort of thing. "But ours isn't really one of them, and it isn't necessary here, I guess. Honestly it's a little odd to be flying a civilian aircraft, but there we are. Still, a co-pilot's not a bad plan here, and we could get you certified I bet. It's a bit different from at home, but it might be even easier for you cause you don't have the pre-knowledge and expectations to press up against." He was grinning, pleased that Finn was interested in the idea, and pleased at the possibilities therein. Sure Rey was an excellent co-pilot, and he could co-pilot for her too, but the idea of being able to make flights with just Finn up there in the cockpit, he liked that more than he was ready to admit to Finn himself, so instead he just leaned forward. "I'm guessing they don't have flight simulators here, but we could look into it when we get back?" Finn smiled a little. He’d never considered being a co-pilot before, but he liked the idea of being a co-pilot with Poe. He liked the idea of being able to learn from Poe and with him at the same time. “It’ll give me something to do since I haven’t really figured out what I want to do. It’s probably better than working on the trash truck or as a school janitor or something.” Neither of those things afforded him such a good excuse to spend more time with Poe. It also gave him time with Rey, but he wasn’t thinking about that as much. “They probably don’t, but yeah. We can figure that out with time. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem.” He smiled. “We can just focus on all the different things that we can do here instead while we’re waiting to be able to do the whole co-pilot thing.” "I mean, seriously, though, if you enjoyed it, and you liked doing it, you could probably work with Rey and I with this whole business thing. You might need to do something else for a bit, just until we get things more stable, but we'd love to have you working for us. And with the three of us, and the droid, we'd have a good little business I bet." Sure, all of this was assuming that they would get back to Tumbleweed, but they always had thus far and Poe was going to take the liberty to assume they would this time. And it might be a few months, and who knew what would happen between now and then, but the idea of him, Rey, and Finn all in the same place, having a business together? It was all right. It was better than alright really considering that he'd felt so alone for so long. "It's a sort of plan, but really we should figure out what we want to do after lunch today. I've got time, we could do some exploring if you don't have to get back?" Finn nodded. He could probably be a janitor for a while. “And you can have any of my money you need to start things or get things going. If it’s important to you guys, it’s important to me.” He gave Poe a smile. He wasn’t bothered by the concept of his money being put to use to help with their business. They could also buy groceries with it. Anything they needed. It was a lot of money. He didn’t need all of it. He didn’t think that he was going to go to school or anything. Maybe he could save some of it for flight lessons or something. But if he was working, too, he’d manage. “I don’t have anything to get back to,” he said after a moment. “I think we should do some exploring. Eventually we can go down to the beach. I’d like to be around the water some more.” "Nah, I don't want to take that," Poe shook his head, but he was smiling to tell Finn he was happy for offer. He knew Finn wanted to help. "I mean, maybe for stuff at the house as we're getting started. We may not be making a lot of extra income for a while if we're throwing all our time into the airplane business." He finished off the salad on his plate and looked over towards the window, nodding. "Yeah, I think the beach sounds like a great plan. We could take our shoes off and maybe stick our toes in." Finn smiled. “Okay. I’ll help out with stuff around the house, then. And I’ll work to make some money while we’re waiting for things to start up. I can do that.” He was a Dameron (legally anyway), so that meant that he would make sure their family was able to eat and get things they needed. He could be that for them. Nodding, Finn started to pack his things back up so that they could take it back and dispose of it somewhere. “Okay. We’ll find our way to the beach. We can wade into the water a little bit, too. It’ll be nice.” |
