Who: Credence Barebone & Luna Lovegood
When: Back early January, shortly after they arrived here.
Where: The decks.
What: Credence & Luna go deck walking, looking at the fish below.
Rating: Low, I think. Credence discusses anxiety some.
Status: COMPLETE.
Credence was finding that the whole ship and water situation was maybe not quite as anxiety inducing as the spaceship situation had been. Sure, it was still him, and his Obscurus on a boat with a lot of people and his Obscurus could still, if he didn't control it or at least keep it contained, do a lot of damage. However, people could live in lifeboats and water, particularly warm water, for a while, which was a lot different from space. And so, it was possible that Credence was even enjoying himself a little bit. Just a little bit, but a little bit. And right now that enjoying himself meant that he was walking along the deck with Luna, sleeves rolled up, and the breeze playing with his hair. If you would have told him in New York, what felt like a lifetime ago, that he would be on a fancy cruise as if he were William Randolph Hearst or something, he would have stared at you as if you were mad. But… here he was. "Has anyone figured out where we are?" Credence asked Luna. He knew some people had looked into it, but there still just seemed to be water everywhere and no sign of land, and it was almost unnerving and anxiety almost crept back in, but he pushed it away. They were fine. Right? Right. They were fine. Luna had enjoyed herself. She’d never worn a swimming suit before, but she got one so she could go in the pool. It was a bright blue one piece. Over that, however, she wore a Hawaiian shirt with one of the Hawaiian wrap skirts, choosing not to wear shoes as she walked. She didn’t mind. It kept her from having to worry about her shoes going missing. She wasn’t very fond of the sandals either. Flip flops made her toes feel angry. So it was just easier this way. “I don’t think they have,” she said quietly. Her hair was blowing around, making it messier than it already was. Not that she minded. She’d never fussed over the way that she looked. She supposed she was meant to, but she just never had. It seemed like a lot of work for something that didn’t really matter. She quietly reached over to touch Credence’s arm. She didn’t say anything because there wasn’t a reason to. She knew he was concerned about the boat even if he didn’t really say anything. He had the Obscurus to worry about. Though, she thought that he would be okay. It was just being able to figure things out. It wouldn’t be easy, so Luna never told him it would be. It would be a lot of work, but she knew that he would put in the effort and that eventually he’d be okay. “I think maybe we do not need to focus too much on where we are. Perhaps we just need to focus on the things around us.” She walked over to the side of the ship, pointing down. There were water animals here. She didn’t know what they all were, but they seemed to be around the ship. She wondered just how many were around where they couldn’t see. Credence pushed a hair back behind his ear. He liked it longer, he thought, or maybe it was just that he was reasonably certain that she would have hated it. His hair had never been his own, nothing had ever been his own, and perhaps he just wanted something completely different from what had been forced upon him for so long… But that didn't mean that it wasn't a little irritating blowing in his eyes all the time with the breeze. He grasped the railing with both hands, probably more tightly than was strictly required, and glanced over. There was wisdom in that suggestion he knew. He couldn't really do anything about where they were. If it was somewhere horrible, and there had been the black hole in space thing, then it wasn't as if he could change it, and honestly this didn't seem so horrible. "I've never been on a ship like this before," he told Luna. "I wonder if there are any magical creatures down there." Luna hadn’t really known what it was like not to have control over herself or her choices. Her dad hadn’t really been the strict sort of parent. He’d mostly let her do whatever she liked. It was probably luck that gave him a girl that didn’t try to abuse that freedom. It was also possibly the fact that she’d had some sort of rules before because of her mother. Breaking those rules to her seemed to be impolite. But even those hadn’t been strict. Things like being nice to people, not leaving without saying where you were going. Nothing that any other parent hadn’t told their child before. She offered Credence a small smile. “Me either.” She shrugged slightly. “Dad and I traveled sometimes, but the boats were never this big.” But as she looked over the railing, she considered that. Were there any magical creatures? She didn’t really know. “It would be nice. Perhaps we will know once we get to the first stop. I am curious to see what they have.” "We never traveled," Credence shook his head just once. "It would have been too expensive, and really I suppose Mama was too busy fighting magic in New York where there were so many people to take it anywhere else. But this is so big. It's a bit unnerving how large it is. I feel as if it is a floating town." With all of the shops and restaurants, the entertainment facilities, it was no sort of town that his mother would have approved of, but Albus didn't seem to mind it. Which maybe was one of the reasons why Credence liked Albus. Albus would provide advice sometimes, and would certainly give it if it were asked, but it didn't have that same feel of judgement and shame, and rarely did Credence feel exposed when he asked a question as always had at home. "You weren't here when we were on the starship, were you? The first stop we had there was incredibly large. Overwhelmingly so." “You would have liked Sweden.” She probably couldn’t be sure, but she’d liked it. “There’s a whole day dedicated to waffles.” She grinned. “We missed it. But it’s apparently on 25 March.” She wondered how long they would be on the ship. “Maybe we can do our own waffle day celebration if we’re here for long enough.” She let herself hang on the side of the ship, just staring into the water. “Magic seems like such a strange thing to fight against. I guess people with magic can do bad things, but not always.” She could never understand. “We had people that hated muggleborns because they said they stole magic. It doesn’t make any more sense.” People were very strange about things. She thought it might work better if they just worked together. Only people didn’t really work that way. They were not always very sensible. It was just how they were. “I wasn’t, no.” She often wondered what space would be like. Only she could never know. It also seemed to be a negative experience for the people who had been. “I think we can find our way around and you can stay with me if you’re uncomfortable.” "She hated magic," Credence breathed out, allowing himself to inch just a little further, knuckles still white on the railing as he peered over the edge. The water was moving so rapidly beneath them that he had to straighten back up again. How Luna could just hang over and look, he couldn't quite figure. "She hated it so much and probably me, but it doesn't matter so much here." He glanced over at her and smiled. "Thanks, Luna. We can certainly find our way together. Perhaps we could do something with Albus and Helena too." It was a strange little family they had, he thought, but it felt like family, much as it had with his sisters, except that Luna knew him, and knew about the Obscurus, and that he had magic, and she didn't mind any of those things. That hadn't been the case at home. Had his mother known, and maybe she suspected, he suspected she would have tried to cure him somehow. "I would like to do waffles though." Luna trusted that she wouldn’t be in danger, so it was easy to hang over the side. She was sure that Albus would not like it if he were to see it. She didn’t mind the way the water moved fast or the strange feeling that came with it. She pulled herself back up a little, looking at Credence, hair a mess. “She was scared of something she didn’t understand, so she hated it and attacked it. It doesn’t make it better that she did, but…” Luna reached out again, resting her hand on his arm. “You don’t deserve to be hated for being you.” She looked back out over the water, but left her hand. “I think we’ll always manage together and Albus would probably like to go with us. At least he would like to know if we are going somewhere.” And she didn’t mind telling him. She did it with her parents. “Waffles are good. I like them with fruit.” She had tried them in Sweden even though it wasn’t Waffle Day. They were the best to her with fruit. “We should see if there are any during breakfast sometime.” "I bet Helena would like waffles too," Credence couldn't help but smile at this thought. One of the things he liked most about being here was being able to help spend time with Helena. He had likely watched Frozen more times than any one person ought to have done, and it was largely because he liked spending time with her. Maybe she reminded him of his own sisters - only a bit happier. Nobody had ever been very happy in the house he had grown up in after all. "We could find a place, and take her with us." He leaned over a little bit, following Luna's leave, even if he kept tight hold. He'd be alright, probably, right? It didn't feel as if this were the most terrifying thing he'd ever done. "It would be nice to be liked for me," he said quietly. "I mean," cheeks flushed slightly. "I know you do and Albus does and that's good. I'm still not used to it I guess." “She would probably.” But if she did not like them, Luna would let her eat whatever she wanted instead. Luna had never had any siblings back home, so she could never be sure if this was what it was like, but she was always happy to spend her time with Helena and Credence. “Yes. I think we should do that. She will probably like all the places to look at.” Luna would like them, also. She smiled as she watched him lean over a little more. She knew others worried more than she did. She walked into dangerous situations without concern for what might happen. She’d made it out of all of those situations without issue, however. She always had. It was probably why she didn’t worry so much about it. “Plenty of people like you for you,” she said after a moment. “I know more people will, too.” Credence glanced over at Luna's statement and he found himself smiling at her. On some level he knew that Luna was different from anyone he'd ever known, but she was also the best friend that he had in so many ways. Like a sister, and she always made him feel as if he was important. It was such a nice feeling. "Thanks, Luna," he nodded. "I hope so." Credence breathed in the air, and then he pushed back from the railing. "Let's go see about searching menus for waffles. Shall we?" |
