It had been months since Mon-El last saw Kara. It had been an emotional departure because he hadn’t expected to ever see her again. With the earth’s atmosphere rapidly filled with lead particles he had had little time to get out. He had hesitated then, because he honestly didn’t want to leave. He would have stayed there if it hadn’t been for Kara making him escape to safety. Never before in his life had he felt the way about a woman the way he felt about Kara. It broke his heart to leave because he thought that he had finally found some glimmer of true happiness in his pitiful existence. So when he found himself on what appeared to be an entirely different earth with no lead in the air and Kara just down the road, no one could blame him for wanting to get out of there the moment he found out she was there. Yes, he had tried making a hole in the wall. Yes, he had tried breaking through the glass. It was all to no avail. He had been rather anxious about getting the hell out so he could see her again and as soon as possible. The one thing that made him not continue trying was the prospect of Kara staying with him outside of his quarantine room. She hadn’t had to do that. He didn’t want her to be somewhere uncomfortable, even if waking up to her outside his room did make it just a little more bearable. It was almost physically painful for him to watch the seconds tick away to his release. He felt more and more frustrated that he couldn’t hold her immediately, but at the same time it made the anticipation of getting to feel her again that more intense. So when that last minute finally approached, Mon-El had made sure his personal bag was slung over his shoulder so that when he could leave he wouldn’t have to deal with the hassle of grabbing anything. The moment he was let out he closed that short distance between himself and Kara, wrapping his arms around her tightly. He lifted her off her feet for a brief moment before setting her back down. “Man, I’ve missed you,” he said with relief before he did the most natural thing he could think of. He kissed her. And damn, did it feel nice to kiss her again. With her back against the opposing wall, she had stood there waiting ever so impatiently for the guards to come and release him. It had been months for her before she’d arrived in Tumbleweed, and a couple of more after the fact, since she had last laid eyes on him that fateful day. Watching him leave just to save his life and save the planet had nearly destroyed Kara. For once in her life, she’d finally found something that worked for her. It hadn’t been perfect, but they had just begun to get on the road to a good place when his parents had to come and wreck it all. Red booted heel tapping noisily against the floor, she watched him pack up his things anxiously. At that moment, it didn’t matter to her whether he was actually Mon-El. Her gut said it was, so for now she’d give in to that need to see him and be with him. Cisco could run his tests later and satisfy that nagging worry in the back of her head that wouldn’t quell, because she just couldn’t believe that something so grand could have fallen back into her lap. When the guards finally came and released him to her, she pushed herself off the wall and met him halfway in an embrace that would have been bone-crunching to anyone else. He wasn’t her equal necessarily, but he could handle her. She didn’t have to worry about breaking his nose accidentally or bruising a rib with affection. By the time his lips had landed on hers, she could feel the tears springing up at the corners of her eyes. Having made the friends here that she had helped soothe the pain in her heart, but only by so much. It kept her together, but often it felt like a ticking time bomb. Now, as she kissed him with everything she had, there was a calm offsetting the storm. Withdrawing only so far as to press her forehead against his, she smiled in spite of the tears sliding slowly down her cheeks. “Hi,” she greeted, ultimately laughing self-consciously at herself and so buried her face in the crook of his neck. “I swore I’d keep it together better than this. I’m sorry.” Hey, Mon-El had shed his fair share of tears in his dramatic departure. He could afford Kara this moment of happy tears. After all, it didn’t stop him from shedding a few himself when he realized just how happy it made him to see her again. All those months without her had been empty. A hole had formed that he had been fairly certain could never be filled again. That is, until he realized Kara was there and suddenly that void began to fill back up with all those happy memories. It was something only one specific woman could fill. He breathed in the scent of her hair and smiled happily. Yes, this was definitely where he belonged. It didn’t matter if it was an earth not his own. Wherever Kara was, Mon-El would consider home. He chuckled, “It’s okay, Kara.” He looked down at her with a warm smile, pulling back enough to look at her. He gently wiped away her tears. “They’re good tears. And hey, I have something that belongs to you.” From his pocket he pulled Alura’s necklace and held it out to her. “It kept me safe like you promised.” Her necklace. Kara’s eyes widened at the sight of it. All that warmth she felt for the sight of him somehow expanded in her chest. Practically snatching it from him, another treasured thing she never thought she’d see again, Kara let herself feel. The tears she’d been resisting, tears she’d been holding back for months now, those toppled out of her. She couldn’t admit just how deep his absence had cut her, only scraped across the surface of it. Once more she threw her arms around him and held on tight. “I love you,” she blurted out. “And I’m pretty sure I won’t be letting you out of my sight for at least a year, okay?” It wasn’t so simple as to just let go of everything, how much it had killed her to part from him for the greater good and know she’d have to carry on doing the right thing without him. Having Mon-El back in her life at all, however, was a step toward healing--perhaps for them both. She hadn’t been alone in that unbearable separation, after all. As emotional as this reunion was, Mon-El couldn’t help his surprise at how much more emotional Kara became. He couldn’t blame her, really. It had been months and they had gone through so much in the months following up to his departure. He had hated that feeling of being without her because without her by his side, he felt completely and utterly alone. She had managed to wiggle herself into his life the way no other woman had. And he liked having her there. His arms wrapped around her once again. At her declaration he felt his heart skip a beat. He laughed at her confession. “Well, you should know I’ll probably do the same thing.” And he fully intended not to let her out of his sight for a while. Maybe not a full year, although that did sound tempting. He kissed the side of her head then, “I love you, too.” She was the first and only woman he had ever loved and he didn’t want that to change. Eventually, she would pull it together. Keeping so much close to the chest meant it was harder to reign it in. Fortunately, she was with him, and he didn’t fault her for feeling too much. If anyone knew how big her heart stood to be, it was Mon-El. It hadn’t felt this full in so long, once the sadness subsided and a concrete certainty that it was truly him set in, she would go back to being normal Kara. “Good,” she muffled into his shoulder with a laugh. Slowly, she seemed to be calming down. It had to be him, no one else knew she’d given him that necklace. When that thought popped into her head, she withdrew from him and held it out to Mon-El. “Put it on me? And then I’ll whisk us far, far away.” She turned around, hair pulled aside for him to place it on her neck. Mon-El wasn’t going to deny Kara a chance to just let everything out, because he felt the same. Maybe not exactly the same, but being torn apart from her and sent into space had torn him apart. He hoped they would never have to experience that again. He wasn’t sure he could handle another heartbreak. He just smiled as he stroked her hair. This was where he belonged. Right here. Anyone who tried to separate them would find it damned hard to do so. “Sure,” he said with a smile, carefully taking the necklace back long enough to put it back where it belonged. He set the necklace around her neck, locking the clasp in place. If this was going to end up too good to be true, Kara decided right then and there that she didn’t really care. Not because she was content to potentially live in a fantasy world, but because a few more precious moments with him would be enough to put her back on her feet if they had to be separated again. With the necklace and the love of her life returned to her, nothing could bring down the smile she wore. So, she turned back to face him, looped her arms about his neck to give his nose a nuzzle, then zipped them out of the building as quickly as she could. The sooner they were back at home together and cuddled up on the couch, the better. Maybe this time she really could have it all. At least for a little while. |
