He'd been fighting the Cybermen, buying the colonists time to escape to a higher level of the ship. It was a suicide mission, and the Doctor knew it, but he was already fighting against regeneration and had no intention of going through with that. He'd been hit by a laser from behind, but still managed to detonate the entire floor, wiping out the Cybermen who had gathered to fight him. It wasn't a final solution, but it definitely caused the Cybermen a heavy blow. And as the Doctor lay on the ground, convinced he was going to finally die, he lamented about the lack of stars. He'd always hoped he would die among the stars.
But he hadn't died. At least not just yet. With frazzled hair and wild eyes, he stumbled around the TARDIS, determined not to regenerate. He had enough, he wasn't going to take on another body. The Time Lords had given him a whole new regeneration cycle, so he had already lived longer than he ought to have. He'd lived long enough. He was ready.
But then, suddenly... he felt better? Even his clothes had changed. No longer were they torn and frayed at the cuffs - even the regeneration process had stopped. Yet he still had the same body. What was going on? He immediately checked the console and found out... he was in a place called ...Tumbleweed? Texas. Earth. The TARDIS doors were stuck, preventing him from leaving, but there was a tablet that somehow appeared on the console, with a network of people to communicate with. Maybe he could figure out what was happening. He'd try to be casual about it, though. He couldn't let it on that something was wrong.
Because something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Not with his body, but with his mind, which in his opinion was much worse. It was difficult to explain, but he could feel his mind unraveling. With a shaky hand he typed and with red eyes, he read the responses, but he couldn't get an explanation. As far as he could understand, he'd been brought to Tumbleweed via a portal along with others from various universes - maybe that's what caused his present condition?
As he sat in a chair in front of the console, he heard footsteps. Looking up, he gasped with surprise. It was River Song. "H-how did you? River! You're here, too! Rose told me you were, but..."
