”Vance!” The familiar bark was a bit more aggravating today. “We have some new arrivals today, a few are done with processing. Do your thing.” Emmeline nodded without saying a word, and it wasn’t until she was alone in the hall when she muttered. “I’m not a bloody welcoming committee.” Though in truth she kind of was. Emmeline has done some work for security but also it’s been a running theme that even with the pamphlets, people still posted on the network about being held captive and still having a ton of questions. Emmeline truly wondered if anyone actually bothered to read the pamphlets. According to the information Emmeline was given, they had several arrivals today. Some were still being processed, but the others, Emmeline had their room number, so she started there first, she didn’t even bother looking at the name. It was a long day, and she just wanted to get this over with. Coming upon the first room, the glass looking in gave Emmeline a clear view as to who was standing there. The familiar face made her stop instantly in her tracks. She looked down at the name on her paper just to be sure. Stefan Salvatore. Her heart pounded heavily in her chest as she looked up from her paper, back down again and then back up. “Stefan?” She called. This was really happening, right? Stefan looked up at the voice to see the first familiar face in this place so far. “Hayley?” he asked, not quite sure of himself. She looked like the hybrid who was almost a friend or at least was an ally at this point, but her voice wasn’t the same. The accent was different. There was no other logical explanation for someone with Hayley’s face to know who he was though, so it seemed plausible this was her. Hayley. It had been a while since someone confused her for Hayley. It also told Emmeline that Stefan didn’t remember the last two times he had been here. Of course. Emmeline cleared her throat uncomfortable and did her best to hide the severe disappointment she was feeling. “My name’s Emmeline, actually, but it’s a common mistake for some of the people that have come through here.” She really didn’t want to be dealing with any of this right now, but she still had a few hours before she was able to go home. Home. Which would be Stefan’s home too once he got out, and she wasn’t entirely sure if she could go through this again. “I’m here to see if there’s anything you need or if you have any further questions about this place. I can tell you what you can expect on the outside. For starters you should know, your brother Damon is here. As well as Elena and Caroline.” Emmeline pointed to the device. “That’s going to be the best way to get a hold of them or I can contact Damon myself and let him know.” Stefan’s head was spinning with everything Emmeline was telling him. The concept of Dopplegangers wasn’t new to him, but his line and Elena’s were suppose to be the only ones. Not that having another was a big surprise. Elena, though? How was she here? How was she awake? Had something happened to Bonnie? And Caroline, would she even want to talk to him? He didn’t blame her for shutting him out after the way he’d hurt her, even if he’d only been trying to do what’s best for her. He had so many questions, but he focused on the one he was the least emotionally invested in. “You look just like Hayley, but you’re not her. Are you a doppleganger?” “I don’t know about that,” Emmeline replied. “I like to think I’m prettier.” She wasn’t really in the mood to joke, but given the current situation, she was deflecting. Having Stefan standing there and not being able to reach out to him was painful. “Not a doppleganger, at least not in the same way your world views dopplegangers. This place-” she gestured. “You’re on another world, another universe actually. Here you’ll find that people you thought were fictional are very real. Shows on the telly, movies and books. Do the Harry Potter books ring a bell? That’s the world I’m from. “So how did you know who I was?” It seemed a logical question given that in what he knew of the Harry Potter books, they didn’t really watch tv or movies, assuming she was saying he was from any of these. He couldn’t help the brief smile at her joke, but he was still confused by a lot of this. The way she’d first greeted, the sound of her heartbeat then and the disappointment he hadn’t been able to help picking up on... Stefan had seen that expression before. He’d caused it before. She’d known him while he was certain he’d never met her before. Then again, it wouldn’t be the first time he’d lost his memories of knowing a beautiful woman, particularly a face that was somehow linked to Klaus. He doubted that was the case here, but he wanted answers. “That’s a little harder to explain,” she admitted. “The easiest answer is that I’m friends with your brother, Damon.” Emmeline hoped that she was able to send out a message to them before Stefan used the network. Even if she did ask, she wasn’t really keen on keeping silent, the others would understand why she would be giving them the heads up. After she leaving here, she would need a strong drink. “He was even nice enough to give me a room at the boarding house. Which I should add by saying that the boarding house is here. Damon, Elena and I live there. As well as a good friend, her name’s Rose and you’ll find that she looks a lot like Elena, but again not from your world. So she’s not a dangerous doppleganger.” Oh and by the way we were dating when you were here the first time. You saved my life and we confessed our love and held each other as we headed towards a black hole. Then you left, came back and didn’t remember, then left again. “This,” she gestured. “It’ll only last a few days. A bunch of us accidentally spread a special kind of flu, it’s a long story, but we time traveled to the 50s when that happened, and that’s why they do this whole quarantine thing now, to make sure we’re not carrying anything that could be spread to the locals. They’ll give you the whole speech when they let you out. Locals don’t know there’s anything special about us, and they’d like to keep it that way.” “I guess I’ll be seeing you around then,” Stefan said as he tried to process everything she’d told him. The idea of having to hide what he was wasn’t knew, but the rest of this whole situation was harder to wrap his head around. Travel through a portal to another dimension, one where friends had dopplegangers who weren’t dopplegangers and where Elena was somehow awake. And this girl from the Harry Potter books was friends with his brother. It was all a lot to take in. He offered Emmeline a smile, but it was probably easy to tell his head was spinning and he was trying to figure all of this out. Emmeline smiled in return but standing there was becoming more and more difficult. “Yeah, I’ll see you around.” After a moment she shifted uncomfortably. “I should probably get back to work. Check in on the other new arrivals. We’re all aware of your dietary needs, so you should be taken care of. If you need anything else, just let me or someone else know.” Preferably someone else. Stefan nodded. “Thank you, Emmeline.” |
