Going through some of my father's apothecary chests to pick one for my next blog post I've found today's "the past was total bollocks" item - a bottle of chocolate covered strychnine tablets. Delicious.

Likely not used for pest control, I'm assuming. At least in the traditional sense of the word.

Daily dose for digestive issues, 1mg. Lethal dose for an adult, 30mg, and half that for a child.

I've only ever heard the word "strychnine" in a Tori Amos song. What is it?

Rat poison. It tastes too fucking bitter to really be useful for murder, which is a damn good thing because it would be terribly effective otherwise. After about twenty minutes of a lethal dose your muscles start seizing up and you go into convulsions that get worse and worse until your backbone is arched backwards, your toes and fingers clench up, and eventually you suffocate either from paralysis or sheer exhaustion. Takes about three hours.

Holy fucking shit that's hardcore. Do you think the chocolate masks the bitterness?

Enough to get it down at least.

Ah, yes, chocolate covered poison for when regular poison just won't do.

How else are you going to get the children to eat it?

Tell them it's for adults only and leave it on a conveniently low shelf?

The label says it's medicine, so I suppose they did exactly fucking that.

Maybe one day we'll achieve Star Trek level medicine and regrow kidneys with a pill.

Or injections to place organ cells that will grow full-size. Like sea monkeys.

It'd be a step up from drugs for everything and anything.

It would probably remove most of the risk of infection in surgical cuts too. No need for antibiotics.

I can't believe someone would do that to perfectly good chocolate.

It was the nineteenth century, I wouldn't be surprised if the chocolate wasn't any bloody good to start with.

My father was a ten thousand year old monster hunter kept alive by a mystical gem embedded in his chest until some cult tried to cut it out and ended up killing everyone involved. He's got a lot of old shit. Most of it's in different places.

Well, that's an unique background. Did you end up taking up his mantle? Or is that too intrusive to ask?
