Rose had finished her second drink, but that’s all it took. She wasn’t a heavy drinker to begin with, but she wasn’t going to turn down a chance to spend time with Martha. All it took was two drinks for her to feel like everything was amusing but not too much so she still felt like she had control. Rose was laughing at a joke, she had to cover her mouth, afraid she’d spit out her last drink. Once she felt safe, she raised her hand and waved to try and stop herself so she could speak. “Does he still eat in bed?” Rose asked trying to get out the words as she continued laughing. They were sharing stories about Mickey. Rose was pretty sure it started because she wanted to know more about their relationship. She was surprised to find out that they were married, but not dissapointed at all. In fact Rose was ecstatic that the two got together. They clearly were a great match, and happy to know that Mickey found happiness. Since Martha’s arrival she had intended on getting to know all the other Doctors Companions, even the ones she had been acquainted with in the past. Which were very few now that she thought of it. It wasn't every day she got to meet the others who knew what it was like to travel in the TARDIS with the Doctor, unsure where you'd end up or if you'd be fighting off a hostile alien race because you accidentally landed on a sacred monument that didn't even look like a monument. Or any number of other bizarre scenarios only Companions could think up. As much as Martha missed those adventures she had become accustomed to making her own decisions and being the one in charge. This new place didn't give her much leeway but she at least got to help people at the base when they arrived. Drinks. That was exactly what Martha needed after a long day of work. Drinks and to catch up with Rose because even if they had known each other a short time, Martha considered her a friend. She giggled into her hand, trying to control herself. Martha snorted at Rose’s question. For a split second she had forgotten Rose and Mickey had gone out long before he ever married Martha. “Oh god, he does!” She laughed for several seconds. “I tell him… I tell him ‘Bloody hell, Mickey! We don't need rats joining us in bed! Stop doing that!’ But does he listen? Nope,” she said with a smirk. A smirk that looked like it was having a hard time keeping a smile at bay. Poor Mickey. If he ever showed up she would have to make it up to him for poking fun at his habits. Rose laughed. “Of course he doesn’t!” This was nice, having a drink with Martha. They didn’t have much of a chance to get to know each other while they were saving the universe, and only for a short time in Mouth Weather. Rose could easily see how Martha and the Doctor became friends, and could see how she and Mickey hit it off. “Good to know some things never change! I am really glad you two found each other, if I hadn’t said that already.” She smiled. “He really does deserve someone brilliant.” The two of them were able to finally talk and work out their differences. Mostly Rose apologising for how she treated him, and the last time they had seen each other, they were able to part as friends. “Right then!” Rose exclaimed after a brief pause. She clapped her hands and then looked over the bar menu. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving. Fancy sharing some appetizers with me? Wish they had proper chips here though,” she groaned. “They do have sweet potato fries that are pretty good.” If anyone could understand men and their poor habits, Martha would really like to meet them. She didn't understand how Mickey could do some of the things he did. But at the same time she loved him and found some of those traits rather endearing. She could easily forgive him for his shortcomings. Martha was glad to hear Rose’s approval. There might have been a small part of her that worried Rose wouldn't be very happy with this pairing, but even if she hadn't it wasn't anyone's business but Martha's and Mickey’s. Martha smiled, “There's always something comforting about some things staying the same. And I really appreciate that, Rose.” She bumped Rose’s shoulder with her own, “Thanks. I like to think I'm a decent enough influence,” she laughed. “Mmmmm, food,” Martha exclaimed and pulled a menu over. “I know! We really need to teach these American’s how to make proper chips. It's a travesty,” she said dramatically. “I think I might eat anything at this point,” she laughed. “It really is.” Rose agreed. “I will say this, their wings are good, messy but good.” Like Martha, she looked over the menu. On cue, their server that brought them their drinks before, noticed they were looking at the menu. She asked if they were ready to order. Smiling Rose looked up. “Yes, I’ll have your sweet potato fries and wings, mild and I suppose ranch would be fine.” Rose added when the server asked what kind of dressing she wanted. Rose wasn’t huge fan of ranch dressing, but she admitted a little bit with the wings did taste good, and she definitely wasn’t a fan of blue cheese dressing. The only time she liked it was when she had blue cheese crumbles in her salad. Then waited for Martha to place her order as well. Between the two of them, they’ll have plenty of food to share. Martha had been there such a short time so far that she hadn’t been able to properly explore the town the way she would have liked. Going out and having drinks with her friend made up for that. She nodded at Rose’s suggestions, because she felt the other woman had good tastes. “I’ll have to try those,” she nodded again as she looked over the menu. Drunk eating. That was always a great way to spend one’s time. After Rose ordered, although she ordered the spicy wings instead of the mild. She also ordered a large plate of onion rings. All to share. And she ordered one more drink while she was at it. “How’s work at the base going? Helping lots of people transitioning lately, eh?” There seemed to be an influx from time to time. Martha herself had snagged a position helping with vaccinations and blood draws, and mending any minor injuries anyone might receive upon arrival, and of course looking them over upon exiting quarantine. It wasn’t as glamorous and exciting as her previous job, but it was helping people. Rose nodded. “It’s going well. Thankfully Ianto’s pamphlets that he’s made has helped out a lot. Usually I can answer any additional questions or if they really don’t understand the technology, I can help. Most of it’s just making sure they’re comfortable while they’re there, plus the training is nice.” Rose did have some with her time at Torchwood and U.N.I.T. but apparently that wasn’t good enough for the Military here. It gave her some leadway, but they felt additional training was needed. “All that and school, I’m surprised I even have time for this!” Rose laughed. It was true, and that’s why she was glad to only be doing each part time. It would take longer of course, but both were equally important to her. “What about you?” Rose asked. “How are things?” Martha had been lucky enough to finish medical school and pass her exams. At least between that and her own experience with Torchwood, U.N.I.T., and her experience as a freelancer she was a commodity. She had medical and fighting skills, as well as some tactical training. Martha was a true badass, even if she didn’t think it herself. She just wanted to help others. So that’s what she did. She smiled, “”I’m glad. They seem like a good lot.” She finished off her drink and set the glass aside as they waited for their food and her last drink. “So far, so good. Everyone has been really helpful.” “That’s great.” Rose replied. “I’m glad you’re settling in well. This place definitely has its ups and downs. Some of the others have been through so much more. Before I arrived they were all on a space cruise ship. Heard it was fun at first, they visited different planets, but they also ran into a bit of trouble.” Rose was careful not to add more. It wasn’t Rose’s place to talk about Jenny, the Doctor’s daughter. “All I know was that not everyone survived and before coming back to Tumbleweed they were all headed towards a black hole.” Rose shivered. “That I’m a little more familiar with. The Doctor and I once got trapped on a small planet that was orbiting a black hole.” Rose only shook her head. That experience wasn’t particularly a happy one for her. “But that story’s too dreary for bar talk!” Rose added making her tone a little happier. Martha smiled, “It’s not so bad once you realize all the odd things that happen around here.” Martha suspected it was because of the portals. She had also grown accustomed to a certain level of excitement and danger in her life. Suddenly not having that anytime she took a break from work always felt so strange to her. Even here it felt odd not having a dangerous alien to hunt down and subdue. “Ohh, that sounds exciting. Shame I wasn’t here sooner, I could have helped,” she said, her tone a little reminiscent as she thought of all the times she could have helped. Martha listened, and even though the alcohol had kicked in enough to make her tipsy she still held some semblance of soberness. She reached over and placed her hand on Rose’s, “I get it. As the Doctor’s Companions, no one can really ever understand the things we’ve seen and done. There are things we’d rather forget, and there are things we can’t explain even if we tried.” It was a bond only the Doctors and their Companions had. Once a member of the TARDIS, always a member of the TARDIS. Even if there were two. Martha smiled once again at the mentions of the bar and nodded, “Agreed!” Just then their food and Martha’s final drink arrived. “Ohhh, good timing. Thank you, madam,” she said, that moment of soberness slipping. Rose nodded in agreement. They all shared a bond and while each adventure might be different for all of the Companions, they all knew what the life was like. “You’re right. I am glad that all of us are here, there is a sense of comradery with all of us, isn’t there?” It certainly made Rose smile and she liked having that bond with everyone that had traveled with the Doctor. She only wished a few more faces would show up. While Donna had a real rough time at Mount Weather, Rose very much missed her wit and friendship. Whatever that was bringing people here, Rose certainly would have a list ready to go if it ever took requests. When Martha’s drink arrived, Rose went ahead and ordered herself another as she was almost finished with hers. “Well then I guess here’s to a new adventure!” Raising her glass. Martha nodded in agreement, “Absolutely. It’s nice to know there’s a group of people who know what it’s like to go traipsing across the universe, saving whole civilizations and having chips at the same time.” A lot of the time Martha did miss those days. It was easy for her to relive her time on the TARDIS. Most of them were enjoyable. Some were tense. Some were frustrating. But Martha had always been a loyal friend to the Doctor. She always would be. Martha waited until Rose her had drink before eating or drinking hers. She picked up her glass and smiled, “May our adventures be abundant,” she tapped her glass against Rose’s before taking a drink. |
