It's remembering a night when Parliament was in danger because a bloke named Guy Fawkes had a plan to blow it up. The plan failed, so we light bonfires in thanks for that and burn effigies.
In a way it's still about remembering that night, and these days it's also turned into a gathering. So there's a big bonfire, drinks, food and friends.
