Who: John Watson, Prompto, others? (Jack Harkness? Gene Hunt?)
What: Shooting stuff and getting to know one another
Where: Trigger Town Gun Range
When: Saturday, October 28, 2:00 pm
Warnings: Hitting targets

It was always good to stay in practice, and since John reckoned he wouldn't have much opportunity to fire his gun in Tumbleweed (for better or for worse), he'd been meaning to check out the local shooting range. When Jack Harkness posted about getting a job there, it reminded him of his intentions, but it was Prompto's suggestion they go there together that sealed the deal. A week or so earlier, he had a run-in with Prompto's flatmate/boyfriend, which didn't go was nicely as it could, and ever since then he'd felt a little guilty over the way he spoke to Noctis. He thought maybe hanging out with Prompto might alleviate some of that guilt.

John met Prompto at the foot of the stairs in their apartment building, and left together, speaking very little, and only on general, local topics - Did you hear, costumes aren't transforming people anymore? What was up with those flying monkeys?. They reached the range, and John checked in his pistol at the desk - a Sig Sauer P226R, just the like one issued to him in Afghanistan. He glanced over at Prompto, curious to see what sort of weapon he'd use, and how his magic kept it hidden on his person until it was needed.

The fact that Prompto hadn't had to kill something in a month was nice - but knowing full well that the world he'd left behind was still waiting for him whenever Tumbleweed decided to cut this extended vacation short was always on his mind. So hitting up the gun range was a good idea in his mind. Plus he kind of liked shooting things - although targets at a gun range and targets on the screen at an arcade was where the joy came from, less in the I might actually die scenario.

He was content enough to keep up with the idle small talk as they walked. John was nice enough, although Prompto had talked more to Sherlock than the other. Still though, it wasn't hard to make random conversation - of course the costumes and flying monkeys helped.

Prompto hadn't been to an actual gun range in years - since Cor took him when it had become clear he was leaning toward firearms during his Crownsguard training. There's a moment where he kind of shifted his weight a little awkwardly, realizing that he had to check in his gun. He figured for this kind of afternoon he'd probably only use the one so in a motion as familiar as breathing at this point, there's a small flick of his wrist as a blue, cackling mist enveloped his hand and he summoned his pistol from the armiger. "Never loose it this way," he said with a smile and a shrug.

Tumbleweed was full of magic users - John came across their written conversations on the journals. It was part of the mystery that came with the town, people from different universes with all sorts of amazing powers. Up to now, John kept himself somewhat sheltered, not really associating with anybody that had powers - or if they did, they didn't display them. So, when Prompto first used his magic, John tensed out of reflex, but became keenly curious.

"I guess not," John commented, unable to keep his eyes off Prompto's hand. Finally, he asked, "Is that something anybody can learn how to do, or are you the only one able to do that?" A skill like that would be damn helpful. "What sort of gun is that?" It bore a resemblance to certain guns in his world, but he could tell right away it was different.

When he'd read about the shooting range on that network thing, Gene had decided he needed to check the place out. Guns and shooting them was something he knew and understood. Thinking too much about time travel, computers, alternate worlds, and all of this other insane bollocks was just going to cause him to end up in the loony bin. He needed something familiar to do and he needed it soon.

After having his firearm inspected by the range staff, Gene picked up the extra box of ammo and made his way onto the range. He nodded to the two men already there as he loaded his Colt Python .357 Magnum. "You must be John and Prompto," he commented, making it more of a statement than an actual question.

Prompto shrugged a little at John's question. "It's a bit of both I guess? Anyone can learn technically but not everyone gets access. Just members of the Crownsguard and Kingsglaive." A small pause and he smirked. "Let me tell you - it looks effortless now but when I first started doing this I almost puked every time." It had, thankfully, gotten easier. But those first days of being granted access to the armiger had been a dizzying and disorienting experience.

Seeing John eye the gun he offered it to the other to inspect. "This one is just a pistol, I've got others that have elemental damage which comes in handy back home but for targets not really needed."

He gave a quick wave to Gene as the other man headed over, a smile in greeting. "Yeah, I'm Prompto."

"Puking?" That part didn't sound good, and while John reflected that it might be a small price to pay at the beginning, it wasn't something he'd want to experience. "So, you were part of a royal guard, then?" Throwing out names like 'crown' and 'king', it was a natural assumption. He was also curious about the elemental weapons, and asked, "Is it possible to have a look at those ones, later?"

The man ahead of them at the counter, who was having his gun inspected before theirs was immediately recognizable. "Gene Hunt," said John, a small smile quirking at the corner of his mouth. He'd watched Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes on the telly back home, but given Gene's nature, and his general reaction on the Network to being here, John thought twice about mentioning this fact. "Nice pistol," he nodded at Gene's weapon. "Have you settled down alright in town?" It was a question that everybody tended to ask, simply because, It's a big change to get used to."

Gene nodded and extended a hand out to John. "Saved my arse in many shoot outs. As for gettin' settled in, well... it's takin' time. Feels like I'm I'm a bloody Star Trek episode with all of the techy shite and the way people are constantly staring' at those tiny little phones all the time. Almost like they're permanently stuck to their hands."
