Leia hoped that bringing a dog into her life, along with school starting up again, might help fill the hole left when Han disappeared. Not that she could or should equate her husband with either a dog or a job, but rather that keeping busy and having a pet to care for might make her notice his absence less. It was something, at least. She bent down to undo the leash now that she was at the park where she was meeting Anakin, and let the dog run off after a ball she tossed. Leia turned and smiled when she felt her son walking up behind her. She greeted him with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "All back to normal then?" she asked, taking him by the shoulders and brushing him off a bit. "How's Nico?" "Yeah, thankfully, I mean, no offense, but it was just weird," Anakin grinned good naturedly as he returned his mother's hug. "I never really realized how much I looked like Jaina." His few days as a woman had been interesting intellectually speaking, and he was pretty certain that if that had been how he had been born, it would have been fine and dandy, but as it was, he'd gotten tired of double takes in the mirror, and there was the more practical matter of he rather liked Nico finding him attractive, which, for obvious reasons, had been less true. "Nico's good, also back to normal, which is probably good for him as I think the whole thing was a little more strange for him than it was for me." He glanced at the dog that had run off and gave his Mom another more immediate grin. "Are you going to introduce us?" Leia nodded. "I'm sure the entire thing was strange for everyone. I count myself fortunate that I didn't have any kind of transformation at all." It was difficult enough when it came to Ben - Kylo, now, again - and then Vader. She pushed all of the thoughts out of her mind. "Yes, of course," she said, and she whistled for the dog to return to them. He stopped and sat at her feet, looking up at the both of them with eyes big with expectation. She pulled a small treat from her pocket and offered it to him in her palm. He happily ate it up. "I'm afraid I don't have a name for him yet," she said with a shrug. "You could have aged down and then we could have just been best friends," Anakin chuckled, even though that would have been incredibly strange. It was nice that his Mom had stayed steady throughout it all. There had been enough other changes around them, and something that was as was expected was good. "Awww," Anakin bent down to put himself more on the dog's level. He was a pretty neat looking animal and while Anakin didn't have his brother's gift for communicating with animals, dogs were pretty straight forward he'd discovered. "We've got to get you a name buddy," he told the dog. "He looks kinda fantastic mom. Looks like he's at least partially trained too huh? He came when you called him." Leia rubbed the dog's head, her fingers scratching behind his ears. "Yes, the woman at the shelter seemed to think he came from a home, where he had already been trained. It certainly helps. I don't think I'd know where to start if I had to train him." She brushed her hair out of her face and took a deep breath. "Though it would be a nice distraction, something to put my time in to, if I had to." "Probably there's someone here that knows something about it," Anakin suggested as he worked at giving the dog some attention. But having it partially done at least wasn't a bad thing even if he worried a bit about his Mom with his Dad gone. "But it's nice that it's at least somewhat done. Hey, maybe you can figure out something new and different for training," he laughed as he stood up. "Jacen would be really good at it I bet. Do you have a ball or something for him?" She fished a small green ball from her pocket and held it out for Anakin to take. The dog, seeing it, barked in excitement, and his tail thumped the ground. "This is one thing he can definitely do," Leia said, smiling. "Play fetch." She offered the ball to her son to throw. Anakin beamed, sudden delight in being able to play with a dog. Granted, Jacen was the one that really loved bizarre animals and seemed to have an uncanny ability to connect with them and Anakin didn't share that, but normal sorts of animals he could enjoy, and a dog certainly followed within the realm of normal. Normal and kinda fantastically fun looking. "There you are," he grinned at the dog and then he tossed the ball out over the park and let the animal bound after it. Anakin looked over at Leia. "He's going to be a great form of company I think. He may keep you pretty busy, but he also seems pretty cool." Leia folded her hands in front of herself, smiling as she watched Anakin interact with the dog. "Yes, I think it'll be good for me right now." She knew she probably didn't really have to explain why that was the case, even if she didn't like admitting that it was the case. It had just been so long since Leia had spent this much time alone. Oh, she knew she wasn't alone, not with staying with Poe and Rey, but it wasn't Han and she felt so selfish that she felt that way. She glanced over at him. "What have you been doing to keep busy?" Anakin shrugged. "Nico and I have just been doing summer stuff, I guess. There's been a fair amount of time in the pool, cause it's hot here, so it's nice to have that right outside the poolhouse I'm staying in. But then we also took a bit of a ride on the motorcycle to get out of town for a few days. It's not that I don't like Tumbleweed all right, but it's a very specific type of place, you know? And Nico has places that I really wanted to see. Although where I really want to go is Italy, but it's harder to get here from here without actually investing in a plane or whatever. If only I had my X-wing," he chuckled. Leia nodded a little. She had done enough reading about Earth and the other places there were to visit that she was familiar with Italy. "Perhaps we ought to take a trip," she said to him. "I don't think we need to buy a plane or anything. Can't we buy a trip on one?" She gave her dog a scratch behind the ears when he brought the ball back and dropped it into her hand. She lobbed it back out into the grass and smiled to watch him chase after it. "I'd like to see more than only Tumbleweed. I've never been very good at staying in the same place for long periods of time." "Well we can," Anakin grinned. "Although it's probably not as fun as flying ourselves," he added cheekily. Still though, he liked the notion of maybe taking a trip with his mom and obviously Nico too. And they could maybe add some other people in. Or maybe it would just be the three of them. That would be all right. "Let's do it then. I mean, we can buy a trip, and it's likely going to be easier than me trying to buy us a plane - which isn't going to happen anytime soon. At least, I could talk to Nico. See if he's interested. And I mean, if he isn't, we could still do something, maybe not Italy though." "I'd be happy to go anywhere you'd like," she told him. "And if you want to save Italy for just you and Nico, that's what you should do." Leia could understand if the two young men had a desire to go off together somewhere alone. She'd have the same desire if Han were here. "I mean, I wouldn't mind sharing it with you and I don't think Nico would either. It's one of those places we talk about someday," Anakin shrugged. He reached over for the ball from his mom so that he could toss it back across the field again, and give the dog something to do. "Of course, I guess with school we'd have to figure out a time. Maybe one of the holidays or vacations. It's not like I'm all that wrapped up in the local holidays from a nostalgic perspective. Although… I guess we also have family here, so it maybe isn't the worst to stay around." His mind wandered to his grandmother and grandfather, and to the others from their galaxy that even if they weren't family exactly, were still close to various people from his galaxy. Maybe they should stick around holidays actually. Although he was pretty certain his grandparents weren't currently living in the same place, and while he hadn't asked the question, not wanting to pry, he did wonder if things were alright between them. "Are you staying with Poe and Rey still?" "I've been meaning to spend more time researching and understanding the local holidays and traditions," Leia said. She really ought to put more focus on it, especially considering the classes she was teaching. It wasn't something she put the focus on, but it could be an entire segment of her class, especially for those curious about Earth and its traditions. She made a note to discuss the idea with her students. Her dog came back over to them and sank down to the ground to chew on the ball, no longer interested in running and chasing after it. She squatted down to give him a pet along the back. "I am, yes," Leia answered. "I didn't want to stay in the apartment alone. Padmé's staying there now, and that's fine with me." Anakin nodded. "If you want, I could probably help a little with that. I mean, I'm not an expert, but Nico knows a fair amount and I've learned quite a bit from him and just being here for as long as I have been." He reached a hand down to pet the dog himself and realized if his grandmother wasn't staying in her apartment then probably she wasn't with his grandfather. Anakin realized there was probably good reasons for that, but he vowed to himself to check in on her and see how she was doing before the week was out. "Poe and Rey seem pretty cool, so I'm glad you've got a place to stay." He wondered if he should have offered to move into the apartment with her. But it might not have been that much better. It was still… their apartment and it was still missing his dad. "It's been a weird summer," he said instead. "I mean, I guess that's sort of a given with this life, but maybe it feels even more personally strange than normal." "I'd appreciate that. Why don't the three of us go out to dinner soon and I'll quiz you both. As long as you don't mind if I take notes while we're eating," Leia joked. Only she wasn't entirely joking. Note-taking was something she had been doing for years. Leia sighed. "It has been a weird summer. Ever since the space cruise, really, I've felt … on edge, I don't know. I suppose I assumed things would settle down after the wedding and then -" Well, and then Han had left. She didn't want to get emotional about it; she already had a lot and needed to move on. She'd been able to move on from things in her life, travesties and horrors and loss - she could do it here, too, with this. "You can take notes," Anakin chuckled. "I'm pretty certain Nico won't mind, but I'll give you permission to do so anyway." And of course if she missed something they could always remind her of it later on. And Nico could correct him on anything important that he forgot. "I guess Fall will maybe settle things a little," he looked over sympathetically. It wasn't that he wanted to remind her of his Dad leaving, but he couldn't help but think of it sometimes too. He was grateful his mom was here, even if he really missed his brother and his sister and it had been amazing to have both parents here, but now, just his Mom. He supposed at least she was his Mom, even if she didn't remember him exactly. If she ever got memories she would remember him, as opposed to the Leia that had been here when he'd first arrived, and had gotten memories not of him but of another son. "I'm glad you're here though. And Grandfather and Grandmother too," he hesitated, then asked anyway: "Are they doing all right?" Leia smiled. "Well, thank you for that," she said. "I always liked when the weather turned a little cooler. I have no idea how Luke managed on Tatooine for so long. Sure, it got cold at night but there was no escaping it during the day. I know here in Tumbleweed it won't ever snow, probably, but at least it will feel like autumn, like winter, instead of the same every day." That was one of the things she missed from Alderaan, the seasons. She shook her head and sighed. "I don't think they are. Padmé is staying at my apartment right now. And after the funhouse … I think that only made matters worse, honestly." Anakin nodded. "When Tahiri was turning eleven, she had to go back and do a ritual for the Sand People and I went with her. And it was more than enough time spent on Tatooine for me," he shrugged. "I definitely respected Uncle Luke a lot more after that. I don't mind being away from people - it's not like there are loads of people on Yavin IV and the Jungle is pretty wild, but it feels more alive than Tatooine ever did." He reached for the ball and tossed it out for the dog once again. "We could always go north. They'll get real winter then, so we could do that." But the information about his grandparents wasn't unexpected, exactly. Having Vader here would have been pretty frightening for his Grandmother surely, and it hadn't been comfortable for him either. "It was kind of difficult for everyone I think. I should check in with both of them." "I wouldn't mind finding somewhere to go that has snow and mountains," Leia said. She pressed her fingertips to her chin briefly, her mind wandering to Alderaan, something it didn't do that often. She banished the thoughts from her mind and smiled at her son. "I think they'd both appreciate it, if you check in with them. Thank you, Anakin." "I will, and we'll do get brunch or something. Maybe Grandfather and I can do some lightsaber training. It's been a while since I did anything with someone who has been trained in actual lightsaber training. Nico and I spar all the time, but his training is a little different. It's good for me, but it'd be nice to have the other too." He knelt to catch the dog as the animal bounded back. "But let's do mountains for Christmas this year," he looked up at her. "I'll ask Nico where we should go. And we could get a group, have snow, skiing or whatever. It'll be good." "Perfect," Leia said, watching Anakin with her dog. She would still need to come up with a name for him, but hopefully that wouldn't be too hard or take too long. After all, she managed, she realized, to name four children over the course of two different lives, so that was something. |
