[Action]

[Normally, Mami Tomoe was a very competent, focused fighter. Watching her fight was like watching a deadly dance, all smooth movements and precise shots.

This Mami, however, was barely a shadow of what she once was. Her mind and heart had been a wreck when she woke up in that strange room. The conversation with that strange child - I can grant any wish you want - had only brought up another wave of horrible memories. She was confused, upset, and stuck in the middle of a complete breakdown with nobody there to help her.

So when she appeared in the world proper, and near-immediately found herself face-to-face with a strange hybrid monster that should not have scared her after all she had seen, but was utterly terrifying to her in her current mental state, she did the first thing her horror-stricken mind thought of: run.

So she does. As she does, enough sense comes back to her to fight, defend yourself. So she turns, summons a rifle, and fires. Her hands are shaking too much and the bullet just about grazes the creature, so she discards it and summons another rifle. This shot manages to hit, but only barely. So she summons a third, aims, squeezes the trigger...

Click.

It's empty.]

What...

[Her shock and confusion causes her to hesitate just long enough; the monster, wounded and snarling, pounces.]

[Radio; some time later]

[The voice coming in over the radio is shaky, but a bit less frightened than its owner had been when she first woke up.] This place... I don't understand. I should be dead. How... how am I here?

[She doesn't seem surprised that Kyuubey was lurking just out of her sight. It was good at that, after all. And Mami, who was normally so good at hiding her emotions under a mask of calm, could barely keep her voice under control. Anger, hurt, betrayal... this furry little bastard had been her friend, and he lied to them all.]

I don't... I can't... [Her voice cracks, and she pauses for a minute.] I'm not going to let you manipulate me anymore.

[She's still holding that empty rifle, the one that still baffled her because of it's lack of ammunition. Her grip on it is white-knuckled, and shaking almost as bad as her voice.]

You never told us the truth. About witches, about the fate of the Puella Magi... [And here her voice turns harsh.] Don't lie! You only came to me when I was helpless and dying... you didn't give me a choice! How can you say you didn't manipulate me!?

Hope? [She laughs, humorless.] I unknowingly encouraged girls I no longer have the right to call friends [again her voice cracks, because even just mentioning them hurts and she has to fight the tears stinging her eyes] to fight beings that were once no different than themselves. I tried helping them the only way I knew how, and I failed even at that. I left them alone, scared and hurt... [she can still hear Homura's pleas ringing in her ears, and again she has to fight against a sob.] How can you call that hope?

[She takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself, when she notices something else Kyuubey said. Her eyes narrow as she looks down at it.] Am I... what?

Unsurprising. When have I ever really had a choice? Become a puella magi or die... continue fighting witches or slowly become corrupted into one... and now this.

[Mami's voice is now not nearly as hysterical as it was at the beginning of their conversation, but she's still only one step away from falling over the edge. Too bad you don't understand human emotions or else you'd pick up on that, huh Kyuubey.]

It was one thing to see Kyuubey, because it was much easier to vent all her anger and frustration out in one go. But what can she say to one of her dear juniors, someone she promised to protect... someone who, only a short time ago, she had tried to kill?

She's not sure if she's ready for this.]

I... I'm not sure. [At least she has enough sense to try to look for landmarks, but...] All the buildings look the same...
