[ 01 ]
The creatures at first are quiet as they come into the city. But as more and more of them flood the streets the louder and louder they get. And Homura is sleeping-- the door locked and barred, the windows closed-- inside the back room of a store across from the hospital. She quickly notices two things as she wakes up: the sound of the monsters and the fact that her surroundings have changed. Her first thought is that she walked to another store in her sleep, and her second thought is what on earth is that noise?

Homura approaches the window and peers outside. The moment she does that a lot of them seem to see the motion behind the curtains and so they start to approach. She's instantly awake and transformed; they come closer and closer and then one is trying to smash through the window. Homura backs up and pushes aside the dresser she'd put in front of the door. She moves away with the door shutting behind her just as there is the sound of shattering glass.

And out the front she goes. She has no rifle, the kind of gun she feels most comfortable with-- she's a small girl and the recoil is easier to handle-- but she has a handgun. A handgun and a limited amount of ammunition. Rushing through the changed store she presses her back against the wall and readies her weapon, firing carefully as the monster breaks down the store's door.

Gamzee's somehow managed to fall asleep in the main area of the store, there being enough sopor already in his system for the nightmares not to grasp him. He shouldn't even be sleeping, really, his body saying it'd be better to continue with his usual schedule of sleeping during the day and waking at night. But from the shock and the faint worry, he'd grown rather tired, and thus fallen asleep on the floor. Which wasn't too comfortable, but it'd happened anyways.

Now, however, he's woken up to the sound of gunshots. Not the sound of monsters, but the gunshots. The sound pounds on his ears and he has absolutely no idea what the sound actually is, but it isn't pleasant. Feeling there's some kind of disturbance, he gets up and wanders towards the sound, vaguely noticing the store's change.

Upon seeing Homura, he gives a start and stares rather blankly at her weapon. It looks blocky and uncomfortable to handle, but he doesn't voice that. Instead, he turns his attention to the banging coming from the back room.

"What the motherfuck is that, chica?" And he starts walking towards her. Hope his apperance doesn't scare you, Homura!

She fires once more, and the monster collapses. Her aim is good, and so she was able to hit it in the head. There's not much more time before another monster might come barging in, but for now she turns towards Gamzee.

Not only does he tower over her he's also gray-skinned and obviously wearing makeup. The horns add at least an additional foot to his height-- he is odd to say the least. But she isn't in a situation where she can ponder the oddness of this person. She simply does not have the time.

"Animals," she says quietly, gesturing to the corpse with her gun. Her eyes flick to the glass walls behind them. It's covered by curtains thankfully. ... this place is probably their worst bet. "I'm going. Come if you like. You'll die if you remain so nonchalant."

He stares down at the dead monster, brows quirking. Huh. Then his gaze travels again to her gun, and he gives a lopsided smile. "And what the motherfuck is that thing you're using there?" Not waiting for an answer, he turns to the monster again, a thoughtful look on his face. It vaguely reminds him of the ogres. "Sure chica, I'll come with you. I guess I haveta fight em? They don't seem too friendly. They didn't even motherfucking knock." Calmly. Quite calmly said.

"It's a handgun. There are a lot of these," she says quietly, approaching the door. "So don't waste your energy fighting unless you have to."

She too is calm but it is of a different sort than Gamzee's; it is the calm of necessity, the calm of someone who has faced much worse. She slowly slinks out of the door and dashes down the street. There are houses just down Mercy. A house will have food, a house will be easier to secure.

Homura isn't sure if the best thing to do is to clamp down and hold still. But it has to be better than constantly moving, the only other alternative.

"Handgun, huh..." He's left pondering her words and it takes him a second to realize she's already on the move. So he follows, keeping his pace steady so as to stay right by her side. He has no clue why he's following her, really, since he has no idea who she is, but she seems perfectly nice. Once they're outside, he speaks in a whisper, smart enough to do at least that. "Hey, sis. Shouldn't we go hide away from those motherfuckers up in one of those hives?" He means to say house, but he doesn't like the way the word sits on his tongue. He looks at her, really looks at her, and he can't help but think she's tiny. She's also human, but humans have turned out to be nice enough. Then he decides to ask another question. "How the hell do handguns work?" Lazily. He really seems quite casual about all this, but she does too, doesn't she?

While she appears casual, she is not; she takes this threat quite seriously. Running as fast as she can gets the attention of monsters but also keeps her a slight step ahead of them before they realize someone's out and about. Quickly, quickly... she doesn't pay any attention to what Gamzee is saying, just pays attention to keeping the air through her lungs and her heels hammering against the ground.

She doesn't look back. She can't afford that split second; she can hear the monsters behind them. So when she kicks open the door, her limbs strengthened with magic, she's expecting exactly what happens. After Gamzee runs inside she slams the door shut and immediately hears and feels the thud of several of them hitting the door. Pushing against it with magic, there's a slight purple glow about the door as she quickly moves a heavy cabinet against it.

Only then does Homura pause to catch her breath.

He doesn't mind that he gets no answer, running along with her at a frantic pace. He briefly wonders what would happen were he to try fighting them off, but that thought fades away as quickly as it'd come. Once inside the house, he glances around, head throbbing. It'd started soft at first, gradually growing, but the more he ran, the more he felt adrenaline running through him, the more he felt it coming on. It cuts a sharp, clear line in his mind, and it's enough for him to think at least a little more sensibly than normal. Figuring Homura has the right idea with blocking the door, he wanders through the kitchen to the door there. Looking around, he grabs one of the dining chairs and rams it under the knob. For added measure, he pulls the dining table up and against the door as well, for all the good it'd do. At least if they broke it down they'd have to scramble over that to get inside. Smiling and feeling rather proud, he walks back into the living room where Homura is and plops down on the couch.

"Motherfuck... ya know, you still haven't told me your name, chica. I'm Gamzee."

"Homura Akemi," she says, and in a bow's stead she nods. Looking at the doors, she decides: this should hold the door closed for a while. But already it's rattling.

She steps through the kitchen, transforming back into her school uniform and quickly gathering up as much food from the cabinets as she can. Bundling it up in a teatowel, she also grabs a can opener. Then she nudges open the basement door and starts down the steps. "Come on," she says. "Down this way."

He follows her at a leisurely pace, only blinking when she transforms. His eyes follow her, but his mind is somewhere else, considering whipping out his clubs for good measure... nah. Not yet.

Gamzee hesitates, wondering why there's steps leading into the ground. He follows her anyways, closing the basement door behind him. This leaves them in the dark, but his eyes adapt quickly enough, and he doesn't even blink. That doesn't keep him from stumbling on the last step, though. Why are they so steep?!

"Hey, sis." He's moved closer, leaning down so as to speak right into her ear. He has no concept of personal space. "Don't you think those motherfuckers'll find us eventually, even if we're down here? We've got our hide on, but maybe they can smell us. What exactly are they, anyways?" Wonders out loud.

She steps back and far away from him, illuminating the darkness with her soul gem. It troubles her to use her magic in front of someone-- he wasn't meant to see her transform-- but he is obviously not human. And this situation calls for use of her magic. She places the food down and goes up the stairs again.

"We're going to block the door and barricade ourselves down here until this passes. If they come by we'll fight. And I don't know what they are. ... I'm going to get some flashlights and batteries, I'll be back."

And off she goes! After around five minutes she returns. She could just use her soul gem but she would prefer not to waste her magic in a place where grief seeds may be difficult to come by. She sets up a flashlight on a table pointing upwards; this way, it's nearly like a lamp.

"Sounds alright, sis." He waits for her quite patiently, looking around the dark basement with a mild sort of amusement. It's pretty bleak in here, but that's fine. Everything is pretty damn fine with him at the moment. Better than being out and around the weird-ass animal monster things.

When she returns he offers a sharp-toothed smile, and once she sets down the flashlight he immediately looks at it. Deciding looking isn't enough, he picks it up and waves it around, settling with it under his chin, making his already odd features even more warped. Okay, that's enough. He sets it down again, bored. Now he settles on just staring at Homura. He still hasn't commented on her magic, not that he's even seen too much of it. He's pretty sure it's just miraculous, and he'd like to leave it at that.

She isn't amused or annoyed by him playing around-- it just is. And so she's up the stairs one last time, pulling a nearby dresser in front of the door with magic. The door opens out.

Homura also locks the door and latches it shut; with that done, she goes to sit by the flashlight. She is silent, pulling out her radio and playing with the dial.

Gamzee stays silent a little while, which by his standards is pretty weird. He's just busy thinking, and for once not voicing his thoughts. Then he stumbles upon the memory that he has some slime pie in his sylladex, and wonders if he should take it out and have a bite. But then again, he doesn't want to be even more drugged up for when the monsters get through. He should stay ready and be as clear headed as possible.

At least, that's what someone reasonable would think, and he flips through his sylladex until he finds it. He takes it out and happily digs in. No forks or spoons, just digs in. Wait, he probably shouldn't have all of it. So just one more bite. Oh, he's also being impolite, isn't he??

"... hey, Homura dawg, want some?"

Homura has no idea where he got that, and is also unsure of what it is actually made of. So she stares for a moment, trying not to turn her nose up at the weird pie.

"I'm not hungry," she says quietly. "But thank you. Your offer is very much appreciated."

"You sure, chica? Awright." He hides the pie away again, deciding that he's had enough, and he has no idea when he's next going to get more. But shit, he isn't exactly ready to fight now, if he was before. Damn.

He looks down at the floor, and finds the concrete extremely interesting, so he sits down cross-legged and hums something while tracing a pattern across the ground.

Good thing you didn't accept it, Homura.

Day hadn't sleapt. She felt uncomfertable sleeping in this strange place that she knew nothing about. She had tried and then given up and snuck out. Even with a guard posted sneaking out of the apartments had been relatively easy.

Since then she had been making a mental map, she was tired but caution first always as Morveer would have said. It wasn't that she didn't trust the others but she would feel better if she was at least some part self sufficient. After all being too relient on Morveer had gotten her dead.

When the noises started she froze and took out the gun that Lightning had given her. Day actually had never seen a gun before but Lightning had showed her the basics. Day did not have much faith in her ability to use it though.

Seeing a building nearby she runs to it. To be confronted with a monster. Usually she would run but she saw a person as well. Hell usually she would still run but the figure was small and a child.

What the hell was that freaky kid thinking. Day ran forward trying to distract the monster more than anything and fired her gun in the air. She had no faith in not hitting the child if she fired at the monster.

This person's bravado throws her completely. She has no idea how to react besides to stare in shock for a moment-- is this person an idiot? But quickly she crawls back to her senses. She aims and in a moment the monster is down.

"What do you think you are doing?" Homura's voice is steady but raised. "Don't waste ammunition."

Day's face registered shock that the kid who looked no more than ten could fire one of these weapons better than she could. Or that a ten year old kid was out killing monsters at all, but seeing as Day had been about this age when she had became Morveer's apprentice.

She really needed some poisons, no matter what Cornelia said, she was useless like this.

"Come on there might be more." No sense in standing around and she didn't really want to be told of by a ten year old for wasting ammunition.

"Why the hell aren't you in the apartments?"

"What little we have is precious," she tells Day, looking around. Monsters are being attracted by the loud noise, and so Homura starts to take off. "Let's move." She completely ignores the question of the apartments, instead moving for the houses nearby.

Day nodded and began to follow, really what was with this world and creapy children? They headed towards the houses, monsters closing in from all sides.

"You got a location to aim for? Because we should probably aim for somewhere with other fighters."

She dashes down the street, moving quickly and silently. This doesn't stop any of the monsters from catching wind of them, however, and so they are the center of attention of many monsters. "If we board ourselves up in one of those houses, it should be fine."

One of the houses suddenly became less attractive as a hiding place the moment its front window - frame and all - was blasted into the street. A small monster limped out of the smoke, took a step towards Homura, and crumpled. Lightning followed, giving Day a quick, irritated look. And the window another.

At least she'd found her wandering roommate. "They've got into the backstreets. Try closer to Mercy."

Day jumped when the window was blasted into the street. She gave the monster a look and then looked at Lightning with surprise, and suspicion. Magic. It didn't exist of course but Lightning used the same tricks as the southern woman...

Noises sounded around them as monsters slowly surrounded them, "We should get back to Mercy then."

She nodded back, tersely, and moved to take point. It said a little that she assumed Homura would guard their backs, and if nothing else, Day had a firearm with her. They only needed to make it onto the main street and then down Mercy.

"The bells were ringing just now. Anyone say what that means?"

Day stayed in the middle, she wasn't stupid she knew fighters when she saw them. And these two, even the kid were fighters. Lightning especially, Day wondered if she was a mercenry back in her own world.

"No idea, maybe to tell the time?"

"One more thing to figure out." A monster - small, but brave - skidded out of the shop ahead, apparently having found it disappointingly empty. Lightning considered her rifle, lowered it again, and sent a cluster of Blizzard spells singing towards it instead. Waste not. The lack of recoil didn't exactly hurt, either.

Day's eyebrows raised at the magic but again she said nothing. After all Lightning had done her the favour of not judging or recinding their agreement to live together when she found out Day was a poisoner. So Day would give her the same benifit of the doubt.

And she had to admit it was useful. "It would of been nice of Lara and Oliver to warn us about these things." She grumbled.

"The child didn't warn us either," her voice is quiet, but not unheard. "So I don't think they knew."

A monster starts to trail after them-- and when it rushes towards them, Homura sends a burst of energy its way. It splits open with a sickening noise but does not die instantly; it takes a few unsteady steps forwards, and collapses. She doesn't like to hurt animals like this; it turns her stomach, really. But this is a necessary thing. And so her averting her eyes is only for a short moment, before she turns her attentions towards everything else.

She has too many things to conserve; her magic, and her ammo.

"They're just as confused as the rest of us," Lightning agreed. Looking around, the situation was far from ideal. Day obviously didn't know how to fight, and Homura was competent but looking more worried each time Light checked.

Fighting them was wasting time. She checked the road ahead - much clearer, since they weren't the only ones living in Mercy with the ability to fight - and changed her mind. "Hey. We're gonna make a run for it. Concentrate on getting to the building, I'll cover you."

Day nodded, it seemed even the child that had enough knowledge and power to drag them here was not omniscient. Day missed her blowpipe, she was definately going to make some poisons and a blowpipe, she was no use without it.

Caution first always, going against Cornelia would be worth it if she could defend herself. She glanced at Lightning and nodded, she trusted her to cover her and trusted that she wouldn't offer if she wasn't sure she could do it. The question of course was what she would want in return, but that question could wait. Day fixed her gaze on the building, "Come on kid," she said to Homura ready to grab her and drag her if she wasn't fast enough, and ran.

"Right," Homura says, and she runs-- she's able to keep up with what looks like ease, but it's just magic pumped through her muscles, her legs. It doesn't take very long to reach the building.
