Like Hogwarts, if Hogwarts was in a post-apocalyptic crapsack world.
Something had happened earlier, though Golbez wasn't clear on any of the details. Between whatever it had been, and the fact that apparently a little boy was missing, one might assume that his offer to teach magic to the less-capable "residents" of Asper would be put off for a more convenient time.

One would be wrong.

This was all the more reason to make sure everyone was capable of holding their own. Once the monsters had retreated for the night, he set up shop in the apartment next to his, using materials he'd looted from buildings around town; a whiteboard and some markers, and some notebooks and pencils for his "students".

The living room hardly made a proper classroom, and of all the people to have for a magic teacher Golbez was probably one of the worse choices. But they would have to take what they could get.

((OOC: For Lillet, Shion, and anyone else who's interested in studying FFIV-style magic. It will take quite some time for characters to achieve tangible results, but it's better than the alternative...

Shion stepped into the room and looked around. He still wasn't sure about magic, and he was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to do magic even if he was taught. But he wasn't really doing much good here otherwise so he was prepared to try. He waited to see if anyone else was going to turn up.

Lillet, of course, turned up with her own pens, pencils, and a large, leather-bound journal she'd liberated from the supplies room. And an Eagerness To Learn, naturally. The moment she arrived, she made a beeline for the white-haired boy she'd met when she first arrived.

"I didn't think I'd see you here, Shion."

"Lillet!" Shion smiled at her, he was surprised how prepared she was, he hadn't even thought of bringing pens and pencils. But then again, it was not something they used in schools in No. 6 so maybe that wasn't surprising.

He was just glad Rat wasn't here to rub in how he was a spoiled city bred kid who knew nothing about the real world. "It's nice to see you again!"

LESSON STARTO

Once everyone had arrived who was going to arrive, Golbez handed out the notebooks and pencils he'd looted, and proceeded to outline for everyone exactly what they could expect from this.

"The type of magic I'll be teaching is called Black Magic," he explained. "It is primarily offensive in nature; if it's Cure magic you're looking for, you're in the wrong place. Likewise, if you were planning to immediately start throwing fireballs at the monsters, that's not going to be happening. Depending on your inherent abilities, it could take anywhere between a couple of days and several weeks before you're able to use the most basic of spells.

"Using magic involves training your mind. You might have to spend several hours a day on spell transcription." He gestured to one of the notebooks he'd handed out. "Furthermore, a strong intellect is required for the use of Black Magic, just as strong spiritual attunement is required for the use of White Magic. It is possible to become an accomplished mage without having natural talent, but you will need to work all the harder for it."

He gestured to the whiteboard, where he had written out one of the basic spells that all beginning mages were required to transcribe; a fire spell. "The purpose behind spell transcription is to help your mind form a strong image of the spell in question; the casting of a spell takes that mental image and projects it into reality."

"Now: Are there any questions?"

If he sounded like a pro, it's only because he'd been practicing magic for most of his life. Teaching was not his strong suit. He was actually flying by the seat of his pants (if he'd been wearing any).

"Sir," Lillet's hand was in the air the moment he gave the floor over to the students. "Wouldn't it also help if you demonstrated the spell?"

Shion nodded at Lillet's question, because he didn't even know what magic looked like apart from the little he had seen when Golbez had rescued him. He had been more focused on the fact he was being attacked by monsters then to pay attention properly.

Golbez nodded in response to Lillet. He'd intended to, but hadn't wanted to overload the "students" with too much information all at once.

"It's called Fire," he said as he held out one hand and conjured up a ball of flame. "Despite the name, you'll want to envision not fire or flames, but heat and warmth itself." And then, because he didn't have anywhere to direct it, he let the spell fizzle out. "I shouldn't have to warn you, but Fire should not be practiced inside, or without access to an extinguishing source."

They had gathered plenty of water that day, but they couldn't afford to waste it on putting out amateurs' mistakes.

Shion watched as Golbez showed the spell he raised his hand. "So... did you say the words in your head?" He pointed at the transcribing, because Golbez had summoned that fire pretty quickly for having to read an entire spell.

Observant. Maybe Shion wasn't as naive as he seemed. Golbez nodded.

"I've been practicing magic for most of my life. When you get to a certain level, all you need to say aloud is the name of the spell itself."

Oh Shion was pleanty naive, he was just also very methodical and scientific, so he noticed these kinds of things. He nodded, that was interesting, it seemed then that the words were not what made the magic work. He kept quiet for now though.
