let's get down to business [open] [mercy courtyard]
Lightning was indeed up and about early, as promised, leaving Day to her vaguely incomprehensible water project and Fang to sleep. Both had made off-hand promises to drop by, whether to learn, help out, or in both of their cases, needle Light incessantly, but that didn't mean they needed to be there at some goddess-forsaken time in the morning.

She did, because she needed to hunt down a few feasible weapon types first. The conversations over the radio had driven it home that as far as weapon stocks went, they were in serious trouble. So she had made a few rounds, moving through the city with antigrav-enhanced speed, and had returned to the courtyard with a variety of poles, sticks, knives and sporting equipment. These she stashed in the corner. She'd eaten during the search, so with nothing else to do, she picked a 'weapon' at random and started to try out a standard GC warm-up. The others would arrive soon, if anyone did actually arrive.

When that failed - the pole she'd chosen was too long and heavy for some of the higher flips - she switched to one she'd seen Kain use. Maybe it'd be easier to pretend the thing was a spear.

By morning, Sora had made a decision: She wasn't going to let herself give into these negative feelings she had. She was going to use the magic Kyuubey had given her for now, and hopefully find some way to cancel the contract later; either way, she wasn't going to despair, and she wasn't going to become a witch.

But that meant rationing her magic. Which she could do, because she knew how to fight even without it. Still, she could use some pointers on using real weapons, and doing real damage to real monsters, not psychic damage to real boys who she didn't even want to hurt.

Still, she didn't know where to begin, so she was mostly just wandering around. It was only luck that she found Lightning in the courtyard. "Good morning! What're you doing?"

"Waiting," was Lightning's helpful reply, as she wound down and relaxed her grip on the pole. For all that she'd arranged this, the idea of actually teaching a group had her slightly self-conscious. "Training, if anyone actually shows up. You must've missed the memo."

"Memo? Ooh, training? That sounds great!" Just what she'd been looking for. "Count me in!"

"Right." She looked Sora over, taking in her total lack of anything resembling a melee weapon, and nodded over to the small selection of impromptu weapons in the corner of the courtyard, "There's some stuff over there you can use. If you've got a favourite, go get it."

Sora looked over at the selection of weapons. The closest thing to anything she was familiar with was one of those poles, so she picked one up. However, she held it more like a sword than like a spear. Clearly, she had a long way to go.

"Got one! How many other people are coming?"

"Who knows?" It wasn't sarcasm, not really. With only two responses to her radio broadcast that she'd been able to catch and one of them Fang, she didn't expect many people to show. "Maybe a few more, but it might take a while before they arrive."

She considered Sora again, and then 'drew' her practice pole, to alert the girl to the fake threat. "In the meantime, let's see what you've got."

Sora nodded and shifted her stance into one for attacking. The older woman was plenty capable of defending herself, but she was reluctant to actually hurt Lightning. So when she thrust, she aimed to knock Lightning's pole out of her hands.

Sora's movements showed she had practice, but they were still amateur and easy to read. It's not like she'd been fighting actual professionals back at Utopia, after all.

And boy, was that all obvious. If they needed to fight human opponents, Light might have let Sora's immediate attempt to disarm stand. As it was, they didn't, and most of the things they'd be fighting had weapons you couldn't knock away from them. Like claws, for example.

She hopped to the side, catching the blow and pushing the pole away from her with a sharp movement. "First difference from your simulations," she said, "You're not fighting for a clean, easy victory. You're fighting to stop the other guy. To stop them from being a threat, any way you can." She took a step back, and threw her own pole away, letting it roll out her immediate reach. "There, I've been disarmed. What were you planning to do next?"

"I, um..." But Lightning had a point, and she knew it. The monsters weren't just going to give up and run away... and even if they did, then they wouldn't drop the energy everyone needed to survive. Killing them, or dying herself, was inevitable.

She swung again, this time in an attempt to whack Lightning upside the head. While it might have been a good move, it was hampered by how Sora instinctively restrained herself so as not to cause serious harm.

It was a good strike, though. That Sora held back meant that Light didn't bother to dodge in any particularly flashy way, and, impatient to drive home the lesson, she countered before the girl could settle back into a stance. Ducking below the attack, she swung her own pole towards Sora's shins.

"Woah!" Sora stumbled, trying to avoid Lightning's attack. She managed to stay on her feet, but she left herself wide open.

Fang doesn't remember the last time she'd slept so good. The alcohol had probably helped a little, but she had slept on a bed and her joints had been extremely grateful for it. Of course, waking up covered in dust, wasn't exactly how she'd pictured it--in fact she was pretty sure she wouldn't wake up in this place at all--and after some dusting down, Fang went in search of Lightning.

It didn't take her long to find her either, and Fang exited the apartment, still with patches of dust on her where she'd missed and made a beeline for Lightning. She stretched, her bones clicking, and then moved her arms around.

"Mornin'."

Light nodded in return, throwing the 'spear' she'd been practising with across the small space to Fang once she'd finished her last swing.

"You sound like you slept well," she said. It was off-hand; after all, Lightning hadn't woken her up when she'd gotten up herself, so it couldn't have been an awful night.

Or, as Fang had concluded, that could have been the alcohol. Who knew.

Fang caught it without much thought, and swung it around a few times to get the feel of it. She also bent it over her knee to feel how flexible it was. She had been glad that the alcohol had helped. The dust, like from the bar the night before, reminded her far too much of memories she'd rather forget. The fields of ash and dust that was all that remained of their hometown. It didn't sit well with her that it kept cropping up all over the place, and Fang didn't want to think about where it came from either.

She snorted at Lightning, and shot her a grin. "I think after what I just went through before I ended up here, it was a miracle that I woke up."

After her conversation with the kid and her magical walking flask Day went down to the courtyard to meet Light. She had the gun Light had given her on the first day they had been here, only a couple of days ago, it felt like a life time; and a dart gun, not poisoned for now. But Day doubted she would be anything near a decent shot with these things so if poison helped she would use it.

She had also picked up a roll from somewhere and was eating it as she entered the courtyard, "I don't know what this city had against bows, I haven't seen one yet."

"That'd be the reason for close-combat training, Day. Civilian settlements aren't exactly full of weapon lockers." She looked what Day had brought over again, but no melee weapons magically appeared. Well, this was why she'd called the session. "Go get something from the corner."

Day scowled, because honestly. Civilian settlements that wern't heavily armed in Styria got burned pretty fast if they didn't also have big walls. She nodded though and went to dump the things she had brought in the corner and stare at the weapons there.

Knives and poles mostly. The pole seemed too... big... So Day picked up the knife. Even to her untrained eye she knew it was the type more used for cooking than for fighting with. But Friendly had told her that meat was meat once you chopped it up with a cleaver so... she guessed it would do. It wasn't as if they had much choice.

Elliot looked over the array of sticks in the corner, frowning to himself. There wasn't a sword in sight, unfortunately, so he had to make do with something else.

He picks up a golf club and looks at it dubiously. Too thin and heavy at the tip for him to efficiently use...

Lightning noticed his expression, and left the group to walk over.

"It's not exactly an arsenal," was her gruff apology. "But we're gonna have to learn to use these things, rather than the real weapons we're used to. Might as well make sure we know what we're doing."
