Three years had passed since Æolyn had come to call the Brecilain Forest home. She'd never felt more safe anywhere than she did in these woods, even if she wasn't in the confines of the camp. Something just felt right about being in the forest and she found an inner peace she hadn't known existed until she'd come here. She'd never had as many friends nor learned so much in her life ever. True, Lyn had never really had a constant friend in her life besides her parents, but here she had many. These were friends she was sure she'd have for life, even if her life took her away from the Dalish. She'd find them one day and it'd be as if she never left. Or so she imagined. But even the trees of the forest changed if left alone for years so it went without saying that her friends would probably do the same. Today was a glorious spring day. The rains that had plagued eastern Ferelden had seen fit to stop for today, a good omen in Lyn's opinion, as today was her birthday. She was turning fourteen, a momentous day her mother had told her though every birthday was momentous to Yolita. Lyn had to agree with her mother though, today just felt special. If felt different than all the others she'd lived, better somehow. She walked the forest near her clan's campsite, keeping an eye out for anything unnatural and an ear open for the approach of anything. She was anticipating only one visitor while she was out, but that didn't stop the other inhabitants of the forest from visiting her. She'd had a few run ins with those inhabitants though none of those encounters had been story worthy. Most of them were distant sightings anyway, though a few times she'd been able to get close enough to the deer to reach out and touch them before they turned tail and bounded off, more afraid of her than she was them. Passing through a clearing in the brush Lyn smiled to herself, looking up into the clear blue sky before scanning the area with her crystalline blue eyes. It wasn't much larger than the common area of their camp, with a few bushes scattered amongst the clearing floor. Near the middle was a fallen log that looked to be very old. It had a large trunk and several rings through it, but was decaying near the middle with various types of lichen growing on its side. Looking around the clearing once more, Lyn stepped into the sunlight and made her way towards the log, studying the different life forms on it. From the biggest mushroom growing on its bark to the tiniest ant harvesting the nearby greenery, the tree was a miniature habit. It was amazing to her how so many things could be occurring in this one place with so many other things going on around it. Smiling to herself she stood up straight and cocked her head to the side, studying the insects on the surface of the log from a different angle, as if that made it different somehow. Staring at them marching across the bark she continued to think about how big the world actually was, with so many things going on at once. It was mind blowing sometimes. She was so deep in thought that she'd stopped paying attention to her surroundings, her guard coming down without even noticing it.</center> |
