Summary:A woman camping alone in these cold mountains might be a strange sight to this young and curious dwarf.
Rating: Fine for all
The sun was just sinking in the sky, disappearing behind the jagged peaks of the snow-capped mountains when the lone woman tromping her way up the snowy path, freshly killed rabbit held in one hand, pack strapped over the heavy claymore on her back, furs draped over her shoulders, broke away from the packed snow of the mountain pass and veered between the shelter of two bulky firs. Tucked close along the sheer Cliffside of the mountain the trees helped to block the wind and afford a small amount of privacy to make a camp. She hung the rabbit from one of the highest branches that she could reach and then set her things aside.
The first order of business was to build a fire. Dry wood was sparse in the snowy mountains, but she gathered some fallen sticks and twigs, clearing the snow in a circle to expose the damp, rocky ground. The sticks were piled there, topped with handfuls of pine-needles. Flint and tinder made a spark to get the fire burning and she leaned close to fan the embers to flame with a low puff of breath. As the fire began to flicker and crackle to life behind her the woman turned her attention back to the meal she would prepare. Hunting knife in hand she made quick work of skinning a cleaning; her motions long practiced, one familiar with hunting her own game and furs.
It wasn’t long before the rabbit was roasting over the fire. Imenry cleaned the blade of the knife before tucking it away and brushed more snow away to expose the stone beneath, laying down treated furs to provide a dry spot to sit, and later a place for her to roll out her bed. The woman carried no tent to pitch against the cold, instead insulating herself with furs and layers, and sleeping beneath the clear night sky. The smell of roasting meat assaulted her senses, making her stomach growl. It had been a while since she’d eaten more than dried jerky, pushing herself up the steep mountain pass and leaving the red cliffs of the lowlands behind her.
There were many thoughts swirling through her head, memories and wonderings, and the familiar surroundings of stone and snow settled something in her, making her think of home and more pleasant times. Settling down on the furs she had spread on the ground she laid her claymore across her lap and studied the hilt for a moment, the flickering firelight dancing over her face, reflecting off the grey pools of her irises. Her long dark hair was loose, wind blown around her face and falling in a tangle down her back. Blue paint was streaked over her face, the curve of a cheek, slashed across one eye, sweeping down one temple and following the dip of her chin. It was faded and cracking against the skin and would be washed away before she settled down to sleep.
Imenry drew the sword free of its leather sheath with a whisper of sound. The silverite blade was polished to a shine, reflecting the firelight like a mirror and causing streaks of light to flicker over her face as they reflected back at her.
