There is one thing that is the same about every city; the smell. Get all these humans in one place and it’s bound to happen. In the poorer parts it worse, where the waste piles in the streets and rots. In the richer parts some poor slave is probably sent out to shovel it away and polish the streets until they can be eaten from. But perhaps that thought is folly.
Her stay in Denerim will be only for the night, perhaps enough time to procure another contract before she moves again. Cities, though easy to get lost in, are something she prefers to avoid.
A tavern like this, no one notices when she steps in the door, her fur-lined leather boots scuffing against the scarred wooden floor. It smells of ale, vomit, and sweat, but it’s warm inside and the smell of food makes her stomach gurgle. The pouch of coins at her hip is getting lighter though, and it’s the choice between food or a room.
Eyes narrowing she scans the room and spies a mark sitting at the bar. It isn’t that there’s anything particularly striking about him, brown hair, brown eyes, nose slightly crooked as if he’s been in a fight or two. But he doesn’t look as though he’s drowned too many sorrows in his beer just yet, and he’s attractive in his own way, lean with a glimpse of muscle in the breadth of his shoulders.
Brushing her hair from her face she crosses to the bar and slides onto the stool next to his. He turns when she sits, curious and she meets his gaze, lashes sweeping down slightly before the smile tugs at her lips. It is a smile she has perfected, and by the light in his eyes he understands her meaning all too well. He orders her an ale and turns to face her more fully.
After tucking away a bowl of the house gruel and another pint of ale she shifts away from the bar, invitation in her eyes.
“Just passing through?” she asks, and it is almost foreign to hear the sound of her own voice.
“Got a room for the night.” He stands, sliding coins across the bar top. A grin slides over his features then, etching dimples around his mouth that draw her gaze. “Bed big enough for two.”
The offer is of course, accepted. In a life where survival is everything, pleasure it taken where it comes and pleasures of the flesh make her feel. It is the only time she feels other than when she is killing, when she is spilling blood and feasting on the pain of her victims. The very thought makes her bite down on her lower lip against a shudder as she follows the man up the narrow stairs to the rented room.
Here the smell of booze is dulled, and the candle light throws an odd hazy glow over everything. She props her sword carefully against the wall, then moves to slowly lock the door. Boots are unlaced and tossed carelessly aside before she stands straight, finding herself eye-level with his chin, and he is invading her space. She smiles and there is something dark in it as she shoves him down on the bed, tearing away his shirt.
Her clothes in a pile on the floor she rises over him and the firelight flickers over her skin, highlighting the scars that mar the pale flesh. His hands are on her hips and her head is thrown back. She marks him with her nails, scoring welts across his chest, digging crescents into his shoulders and he is too lost in the pleasure of her body to feel the pain.
She sleeps deeply in the tangled sheets and rises before the sun, slipping silently out of the bed and dressing hastily. He is sprawled over the bed on his stomach and there are scratches on his back. She watches him a moment as she picks up her sword and shoulders her pack. She feels nothing for him, cares not to know his name. She closes her eyes a long moment… but when she opens them again she still feels nothing.
