Coan couldn't think of another activity of leisure that he enjoyed more than fishing. Gwaren was fishing town, and it didn't take Coan long to pick up on the local trend. He hadn't spent much time fishing in South Reach, so naturally, he needed to be taught. Talfryn, as unusual as it may seem, was not the one to impart this knowledge on him. The man had an abundance of patience. He'd somehow managed to get through years of training with Coan, from trying to get him to use a shield, to convincing him that he wasn't an Ash Warrior, and puppies didn't belong in battle. However, he couldn't make himself stand around for hours holding a stick. Give him a bow and arrow, and he'll gladly go hunting, but fishing was lazy and boring. So, the lesson was left to Ser Taran. The former knight had more time on his hands than he knew what to do with. He'd been injured severely and was no longer able to serve in the teyrna's martial forces, so, between being a new father, he'd become something of an adviser to her. When he wasn't needed, at home or by the teyrna, he spent his time fishing, and was often made to take Coan along. Needless to say, Coan was excited for this little fishing trip. Not only was he going to get to relax before doing whatever it was Alistair had planned for them that evening, but he was going to get to spend some time with his new buddy, Rhocanth. Usually, Coan would make a whole day of fishing. He'd go out by the rocks, set up a few poles, and play catch with the Mabari to keep her quiet and out of the water. It was a days work for most people in Gwaren, but for him, it was a relaxing day off. This would be different. Rhocanth was new to the surface, and so naturally, bodies of water, let alone the things in them, were new too. He had lots of questions, and Coan didn't mind one bit taking the time to answer them. Eventually the questions led him to deciding he was going to take the dwarf fishing, which, if he had his way, would end in a bountiful dinner, if not for the group, for the two of them at least. When Noa saw him gathering up poles and tackle, she knew exactly what was going on, and she was excited. She loved water, and she knew when the sticks with the string and spinny things came out, there was going to be an abundance of water for her to play in. She'd followed the two down to the docks happily, knowing better than to play where Coan had situated himself. She always got yelled at when she did, so she'd sometimes wander quite a ways down on the beach to occupy herself, or hope he brought some entertainment for her. Not knowing the area too well, Coan prefer to keep her from wandering too far off, so he brought her favorite leather ball, and once they'd reached the dock, he threw it off so she could go chase it, and leave him a little time to start explaining things to Rhocanth. "As long as we keep her quiet and out of the water, we should have a good time out here!" The weather was mild, and the water was calm. This may have been even better if they were in a boat, but he wanted to start with the basics. "This is for you," he handed him a fishing pole a foot or so shorter than his own - had he given him one of the same size, the mechanics of reeling in a catch would have been completely off. "Hopefully they're biting. We've promised dinner. We don't want to disappoint!" |
