“I’ll take your word then,” Aurin’s words came slowly as he watched the liquid disappear down her throat. He seemed to relax though as she seemed to look so very much better with just a slight bit of the potion. She didn’t seem to be seriously hurt, and that made him feel just the slightest bit better about the whole ordeal. She was better and that’s what mattered the most to him. “Well its what I do, Beth.” His words held a wry twist of humor to them. “And I’ll listen if you want too, if it’ll make you feel better.”
It as the truth, he would always listen to her. Even if it wasn’t something he really wanted to hear he would still at least listen. “You never were easily provoked. Until it came to your friends at least.” He smiled slightly towards her once again at that before he sighed lightly. “No I think harlot would be a good way to describe Thais Keigwin. I can believe she was acting inappropriately.” He agreed with her at least. In his view it wasn’t in the least hypocritical. He knew if Beth had her way he wouldn’t be in the situation they both found themselves in. She hadn’t done this by her own choice. He had forced the issue. It was that pause and that name in the quiet voice her hers that made his expression change. It wasn’t anger though that crossed his face for that moment, it wasn’t hate or annoyance. It was a sadness for just a moment before she turned away. A resigned smile that never came close to his eyes. He knew what Bethen was like, though and he couldn’t bring himself to blame her for trying to help a friend. “Yes. Very massive understatement. I mean he beat me and locked me in a footlocker the first time I met him.” He stopped himself though, listening to her instead of condemning the Tranquil. “You’ve always been overprotective of your friends.” That left a lightly bitter taste on his tongue, admitting that Constans and her were friends. It showed for only a moment in his eyes before he moved on.
“Its no trouble unless the Enchantress reports it, and I don’t believe she will. It would reflect badly on her…so there isn’t anything for you to be sorry about. All water under the bridge. I can believe you did that though…you have before.” Seeing the flush though he smiled and stepped forwards to kneel on the floor next to the bed. “Well I’m glad I did happen by when I did then. it’s a long way back to the Tower, and it would have been terribly boring for you with not much company.” He chuckled as well though as he reached up to settle one hand over one of hers for just a moment. “Yes. You are going to be a Warden, and then you’ll be out of the Tower and able to go get all the books you like. You won’t have to have Alderic and I to bring you new stories.”
He fell silent though as he became aware of the distance that had grown between them. Yet one more fork in the road stood ahead, and he wasn’t sure just where he would stand in that road. The Chantry could freely order him out of the service of the Wardens, and then what was the chance of him ever really seeing her again. Finally though he smiled towards the woman. “…and you’ve been my problem since we were kids. Don’t think just because you get to wear some fancy symbol that you stop. Besides, someone has to keep Alderic in line as well.”
