Jaden had never once considered that the art of carving things out of wood would be unknown to someone. He supposed he should have, knowing that dwarves spent most of their lives underground, in their vast tunnels or what have you. But being in the forest, being around the trees was as natural to Jaden as anything could be. He'd been in the woods since his birth, had gone through the grass as soon as he could walk, and had climbed high into the trees as soon as he had figured out how to. His father had taught him how to make tooks and weapons from the wood. It was on his own, watching others in the clan, that Jaden had learned the more 'artistic' ventures. It wasn't something he participated in very often, always having something else he'd rather be doing. But he did find it a good way to pass the time and occupy his mind.
He turned the small carving over in his head, studying it for himself. "Well, you are right. It is starting to look more like a dog. Might not be as majestic as a true Mabari hound, but it'll do. Maybe a wimpy version," he said with a small smirk. He stuck the knife into the fence, then ran his hand over the carving at her question. "This seems to be from an aspen tree. They're some of the best to carve, but if you work with it enough, you can use any kind of tree. They'll all carve if you try hard enough."
