Something smelled divine.
Easily driven by his stomach (perhaps too easily, his haberdasher had once said), Rhocanth found himself wandering the halls of the keep on this particular evening, taken by some scent that had drifted through the cracks in the stone. He had been sitting fairly peacefully in some sort of commons area, parchment and quill in hand, bullying out the intricacies of a stanza in dactylic pentameter, when distraction had come to caress his face. He had tucked his pen away and gotten up, sniffing the air.
By the Stone, where was that coming from?! As soon as he was sure he knew, it would fade a little and he would have to backtrack, excuse himself from places he was probably not supposed to be. This would quickly grow embarrassing, if he took too many wrong turns. Tucking his parchment a little further under his elbow, he steeled himself and went walking in another direction. The sound of what was likely a spoon against a bowl told him he was right.
Rhocanth rather liked the way the heels of his boots clapped on the stone floor beneath him, the way the arches lifted high across the ceiling. It felt a little more like home than other places they had visited; at least, it made him as comfortable as possible while he awaited what would happen next. It lured him into a sense of security. He gathered it into boldness as he stopped in front of a pair of thick wooden doors, one of which was cracked open slightly. He pushed it a little further and peeked through. A wave of crackling heat hit his face, the scent overwhelming and still impossibly delicious. Here were the depths of the kitchens. Pots and pans hanging overhead, a big brick oven roiling w ith frothy flames. An older man, human from what Rhocanth could discern, was apparently working there. Some sort of servant? He didn't have a uniform, though... odd.
"Hello?" Rhocanth called curiously. "What is that you are doing?"
