The disruption seemed to be resolving itself without any further need for his assistance. Observing this, Constans turned back to the well while those around him still talked, unconcerned by Aurin and Bethen's departure moments later. He poured about half of the water he had drawn over his hands, first one then the other, cleaning off what he could of the grey charcoal dust that caked them. That accomplished he dipped his hands into the bucket, bringing them to his mouth to drink from the hollow of his palms. After repeating the gesture several times he lowered the nearly empty bucket back into the well.
Turning in time to see Ashya stalk quickly away, Constans found himself once again left alone with Thais. He regarded her serenely, considering what should be done to dissuade her from her misguided attachment.
"I believe that we should discuss what has been occurring between you and I, Enchanter. Will you spare a moment longer?"
