Thais' response made it quite clear that the woman didn't really need consolation for the little incident. Also, she hadn't bitten her head off, so she wasn't going to reprimand her for trying to freeze her solid (not yet anyway). The girl shrugged slightly to herself. If she didn't need sympathy, then she wouldn't offer it.
She was about to turn away when Beth's discarded book caught her eye. She bent down to pick it up, wincing as she saw the book had landed in a rather muddy puddle. The girl might not have loved books herself, but she knew that to Beth they were little less than her lifelong companions, and she could envision the dismay in Beth's eyes when she saw this.
Holding the book gingerly from one corner, Ashya wiped most of the mud off on the edge of her robe as best she could. It was still somewhat soggy, but it shouldn't have any lasting damage, she thought optimistically to herself.
The girl glanced once more at Constans and Thais, her gaze lingering for a moment on the Tranquil, before she sighed. She would never understand why losing one's emotions made a person unable to add two and two together in certain situations. It was simply depressing.
Turning abruptly, she walked away, frowning, and deciding to just focus on salvaging the book instead of dwelling on the frustrating Tranquil a few paces away. At least she could bring a smile to Beth's face when she was feeling better - she had simply hated seeing her look so vulnerable sobbing her heart out.
