bethen avilla ; the circle mage (bethe) wrote in thedas,
Beth was momentarily smug when Constans agreed with her, though any sort of enjoyment out of winning the argument was ruined by the following response. Word after word spoken by the woman was intentionally inflammatory, and much as Beth wasn't usually one to have a temper, Thais admittedly knew the exact things to say to set her off. Her already tense grip tightened around the book she held at her side; it would have been a fist if her hand wasn't full.
There were so many things wrong about what the Enchanter was saying to her, and Beth wasn't sure if she was just speaking because she was foolish or ignorant, or if she was trying to irritate her. She had many corrections to make, and none of them in a voice anything less than curt, "First of all, he is not property, something you don't seem to understand." It was a double insult -- not only had Thais treated him like an object, a tool to be used for her own pleasure, but she had implied that there was something else to Beth's reaction. Fair enough, she was perhaps being a bit overprotective of Constans when he had never asked for her aid or opinion on the matter, but she was looking out for him, not for herself. If she could have it any other way, he wouldn't have even been assigned to this mission, at all. He would be locked up in the Tower again or sent out to the store in Denerim -- out of sight, out of mind.
But he was here, and he had needed her help, and things had suddenly become much more personal. Thais was not only being degrading (when Beth was clearly wearing the brightly color robes of a full mage), but now threatening. If it were Irving still in charge of the Tower, she would have thought it an empty notion as she'd had a very close connection to him, but where she stood with Terraster...that was difficult to tell. Regardless, she wasn't going to be bullied, not when Constans was also at stake. Beth stood her ground, the irritation growing in her tone, "Secondly, I'm a fully qualified mage, and thirdly, you're the one who ought to be written up!"
Beth watched Thais look away from her, almost dismissively, and place her hands on Constans again, even after he had plainly told her not to. That was it. The final straw.
"Stop touching him!" Beth shouted, and without thinking, she lunged forward to grab Thais' slim wrist and pull her away from Constans.
