Coan Bryland ; the ferelden noble (coan) wrote in thedas,
Coan spent plenty of time in the library back in Gwaren. Mostly for his studies, but often in hopes of curing boredom. He loved reading over Ferelden's history, making himself familiar with the lives old kings, and comparing reality to the fairy tales he loved as a little boy. If they had more time there at the Circle Tower, he would have loved to read some of the books in their collection, if he was allowed to, of course. As Bethen explained the contents of the library, Coan moved up and down the aisle, reading titles, and admiring the intricate decoration on the spines of some of the books. He made sure not to move out of ear shot, though, not wanting her to have to raise her voice, since there were still people there studying.
He returned to a pile of girl and puppy as Beth explained the intricacies of spells and the books that may have contained them. "You're not boring me, at all." He assured her. "You're only answering the questions I've asked you. I'm quite interested, really," he insisted with a smile of reassurence. "That makes sense, though, I suppose," he nodded, watching his dog try not to fall asleep in her new friends lap. "You can't expect to become a warrior in an instant just because you've picked up a sword," he said with a smile, taking a moment to sit down in the middle of the aisle with her. He knew first hand it was no easy task learning martial arts. Charging at people with your sword pointed in front of you was more likely to break your arm than wound an enemy. He knew from experience. "Why should it be any different with magic?" It was a statement, more than a question, as if he were reasoning with himself. "Practice and patience are universal to learning any skill."
Whether or not things at the tower were actuallyexciting, he couldn't tell. Everything had been hustling and bustling since they arrived, and while he may have pegged the young woman as modest, he understood that their presence there was unusual and apparently caused rare activity in the tower. He chuckled a little when she brought up life as a noble, shaking his head as she recanted. "Please, Coan is fine." He encouraged with more smiles. "And you might think it'd be so exciting, but the redundancy of everything can be rather boring," he said as he rolled his eyes some, looking down to the Mabari, dragging his knuckles over her still wagging tail. "Every now and then something exciting might happen, usually something scandalous," he smirked and shrugged, "but even that fades quickly." He looked back up to the mage, then, a slight, wistful grin on his face. "I always look forward to traveling and meeting new people. Now that I've been recruited by the Grey Wardens, it looks like that will be the norm for me." He was quiet a moment before just barely frowning. "It's rather liberating, actually."
