“Anything to help us fight the Darkspawn will be welcome.” The knight at his side nudged Ordhan again. “You ever seen a Darkspawn, boy? Terrible creatures. They’ll peel the skin right off your eyeballs, just to look at them.”
“I was in the battle of Denerim,” said Ordhan.
“Have a drink with us, ser! To victory!”
Ordhan simply made a dismissive sound and returned to his whetstone. It was hard to think with all this noise. Thinking was never a favorite pastime of his, but it seemed that in the past weeks he wanted to do nothing but brood, as if to make up for the years without it. He sheathed the sword when he was satisfied with the edge and slipped away from the group with a silent nod.
Another group of knights were standing nearby; in the firelight, he could see the emblems on their shields: a sun and sword over a field of blue. It was the Wyland crest. He found himself edging closer. One suddenly turned to look at him.
"Ordhan? Or should I say Ser Ordhan?" The note of derision in the voice made it all the more familiar. Ordhan looked up at the face of Ser Greylon, more lined and weathered than he remembered, but no less stern. While the old knight had never taught Ordhan, himself, watching his brothers' sparring lessons had taught him respect he wouldn't soon forget."Ser Greylon,” he said, crossing an arm over his chest. “I didn’t expect Father to send forces.”
“I was as surprised as you are,” said Greylon. “Though it makes sense, considering. Bann Reynold supported Loghain as well as Howe; perhaps this is his way to make up for it.” Greylon looked him over with the same stare he used to study a poor pupil’s stance or grip. “So you’re a knight, now.”
