Lillie had noticed how Layla and Adara had looked at her ever since the 'incident'. The incident in question having taken place about an hour ago. The four had found themselves, along with the poor barman Damian, cornered down a street that had ended up being a dead end. It hadn't been a dead end before the city had been besieged, but now it was, and the pair of Genlocks that had followed them in had known a group of frightened woman and one man armed only with a heavy wooden club weren't going to be much of a challenge. Damian had fought though, for all that he was worth. He and his club had managed to take out one of the foes, before he was run through by the other Genlock.
It had been horrifying to watch the strong, gentle man crumble on the blade of a rusted sword, the face of the Genlock sneering and black, gnashing his teeth at them. Layla had screamed and even Tamrith had looked like she was about to cry. They knew they had no way out. Until Lillie had raised her hands and summoned all the little magic she knew, freezing the creature in place.
After they'd inched past the creature, then taken off running until they were certain it was very far behind them the women had stood under the shelter of a crumbling building, panting. Fear was within all of them. But for Layla and Adara, that fear had also been targeted at Lillie. They stared at her, then whispered between one another, only falling silent when Tamrith had glared, hands on her hips. "She just saved your worthless lives!"
"She's a mage!" Layla hissed in return, looking towards Lillian warily as if she might explode at any moment of become some sort demon and eat them all. "Even if she saved us, she's an apostate. That's against the law, did you forget that Tamrith?"
"As if you're some measure of a lawful citizen, Layla. Let's just get to the Palace. This isn't the safest place to be having this discussion." Tamrith took Lillie by the arm, smiling down reassuringly at her friend and leading her down an alleyway.
Lillie walked alongside her, feeling blank and empty. Layla had been her friend. But how easily she'd turned on her. She knew this was a possibility. It was why she'd never told another soul, aside from Matthew. He'd been the only one she'd ever trusted with her darkest secret. And Tamrith was proving to be just the friend she always appeared, taking the news in stride. Her friendship would not be withdrawn because Lillie happened to possess magic.
So now they were walking along, the other two behind them, the silence tense. Their pretty dresses, proper for seducing men or lounging about the Pearl were ruined with ash, streaked black, the hems dirty from running along the streets filled with destruction. All around them there was battle; guards and knights fighting the creatures. Lillie was relieved that it at least appeared that many of the creatures had fallen beneath the blades of those who defended Denerim. She didn't know how the battle was going, truly. She only hoped that the city she loved survived.
As they rounded the last corner that led towards the Palace walls Layla and Adara paused, spotting the flash of armor in the distance, and slipped away from the other two. They must look a sight, dressed dirtied, hair wild and eyes wide with fear. They ran up towards the Templar, both of them calling to him and then coming to stop before the man. He was to be respected and they both stopped before him to catch their breath, before Layla greeted him politely.
