His outburst shocked her, smile falling off her face, and a frown appearing in its stead. She could see no reason for him to ask this of her, but it also unsettled her because she could not answer. She had no idea if anyone had dropped her on her head, and even if they had, she guessed it would not explain the things he thought it would. Wetting her lips with her tongue casually, she tried to formulate an answer, the truth slipping out simply because she could find no plausible lie. "I don't know!" It came out louder than she had intended, full of the emotions she hid and kept locked away. Frustration. Confusion. Anger and sorrow. When his voice and face turned hurt, it only made her more frantic somehow. She needed him to be happy and content, that was the only way he would not hurt her, she was sure of it even though this conviction arrived quite suddenly and she did not know from where. Falling back one step, she slumped, her proud stance disappearing as she again scrambled for words, again failing at crafting any lies. "A mage? I don't know what a mage is, I'm not playing coy, I swear!" She tried to say the final words, the explanation that would surely make him stalk away and leave her there, but the words resisted. The expression on his face made her want to tell him everything, anything, just to see it disappear though, and taking a deep, shuddering breath, she finally managed. "I can't remember what I am. All my memories are lost."
There, in a moment he would leave, and she would never see him again, never see that smile that warmed her to the core, or those dark curls her hands remembered so well. It would all be over, and she would be lost and wandering again. Lowering her eyes to the ground, she waited for her judgement.
