At first Elsa stood there, silent and swept up in the great confusion. How could he not remember her, how could he say that they had never met, when she was so convinced they had. The answer came quickly - he lied or she was mistaken. She had only uttered the first thing that came into her mind, but after a moment of silent thought, she realised that she was letting her emotions take the upper hand. While she did not at all know why, usually she kept tight rein of her feelings and actions. From what she knew of herself, the way she acted around this man was very atypical for her. He made her blush and speak without thinking, and then thinking without understanding. She did remember the feel of his skin, she stood there looking at him and she did. Being near him made her want to run away and step closer at the same time.
Making her feet stand still and do neither, she tried to push her mouth into an easy smile. Noticing that he was squinting down at her, she realised that the lights from the village were at her back, so she pulled the shawl off her head and used it to wrap around her shoulders instead. When he still seemed to have trouble seeing her properly she took a step to the side, angling herself so that the faint lightning would illuminate at least the side of her face. She had a faint hope that he would recognize her now, that it would only be the dark that had been playing tricks with his eyes, but it was dying quickly.
"My name is Elsa Zerbino Vargas?" she said, still unable to keep that hopeful lilt out of of her voice. "I didn't mean to bother you, I'm sorry." She hadn't actually had a normal conversation with anyone since...well since she could remember of course, but she had gotten a lot of practice in being charming in order to make people overlook the mystery she presented. When you were a lone woman walking the countryside aimlessly, you learned to be able to avoid questions. But most of her training had been with farm-wives and country women, and she could only hope that a sweet smile and a dose of charm would prove enough magic on this man as well. "I saw you in the battle earlier, do you live in..." She paused, trying to recall if she even know the name of the village, realising she didn't. "...here?" she finished, cocking her head to one side and wrapping the shawl tighter around her.
