While he might have been good at making people believe patently false things, that did not mean he was good at keeping his lies straight. Actually, he was rubbish at that point, partly because he did not want to remember all the lies and partly because they became all tangled up on each other. If he told one person one thing, than he would need to be able to tell it to everyone else. The problem was that he could no always pin down exactly what he had told them and sometimes gave different accounts. It was partly why he could not stay places long and why he could not actually cultivate any friendships that lasted longer than a week.
At least, not since Joriane and definitely not since entering Fereldan.
He wondered what to say to her. In his mind, there was no point denying that he had been in the fight. No only was it futile, but highly suspicious. The problem was that he was working from the assumption that she had seen him do magic, while not knowing that she knew nothing of it. If he walked away right now, she would be none the wiser, but he was more worried about staying under Templar notice to think that his magic had gone unnoticed.
As the silence lengthened to became awkward, he finally came to a conclusion. "Yes, you were with the other mage." He mentally kicked himself repeatedly for saying other, but went on regardless, "Quite the light show, wasn't it?" He watched her carefully for a reaction, trying to discern every flicker of emotion in every movement of her face, but the jumping firelight made it hard as the light never stayed still. It cast shadows and then lightened them, making it hard to get a solid read on her.
