Selina and Jack had a working relationship and he was, unfortunately, the only person that Selina could trust more than others, but it was never complete trust. A liar and a thief could never trust one another but at least they knew how the other operated for the most part. Such was the delicate balance between Selina Lawrence and Jack Dawkins. And they had kept that balance over the years since their first meeting, which hadn't gone over very well, but over the years it improved. They met on occasion and Jack was never allowed through the front door of the Lawrence home as to not raise suspicion. He went through the back where eyes were less observant and they would hardly notice it. The servants entrance was where someone of Jack's standing should go through, after all. Tea was prepared and Selina dismissed the servant, telling her to make herself useful by getting some things from the market. A long list of things that would keep her busy for the length of time Selina needed to talk business with Jack. In the old house where her mother died, Selina strangely felt safe. Protected. Whenever voices came to her they never seemed to be within the walls of her own home. Their increasing frequency was unnerving, but she could not be unnerved when around Jack. Confidence was key because if either of them showed themselves to be weak, the other would certainly take advantage of it. Within the kitchen, Selina waited for Jack to arrive at the appointed time. Along with the tea were a number of muffins and some jam to go with them. And a plate of food as well that Selina pretended to be for herself. She had little appetite and knew that Jack would likely want the freshly cooked meal that sat under a cover to keep it warm. Dressed as a lady as she always was, Selina looked somewhat out of place in the kitchen. She should be walking about the upper rooms where the nicer things were kept, but knowing Jack as a thief, she could not trust him not to pilfer something when above. She never gave him the opportunity either, as when he met with her it was never upstairs. Always in the kitchen where things were easily replaced. |
