Carrie had died.

That was the thought that kept racing through her mind as she walked slowly down the sidewalk. Carrie had died and done something to Sue. Her flats barely made a sound as she just kind of wandered. Sue hadn't realized that whatever Carrie had done to her mind had left marks behind, not until they had both been in the same apartment shortly after her arrival. It had felt like something had snapped into place and then things just started floating.

Sue hadn't said a word about it since. She just couldn't believe that she somehow had powers like Carrie, like the girl she had helped bully. Okay, yes, she had stopped. She had tried to make things right, honest, but it had all gone so wrong. Her guilt still ate at her and seeing Carrie alive and happy? That made her feel more guilty.

If she had stopped it all sooner, if she hadn't started teasing, if she had just tried to help Carrie adjust to school... The what-ifs were strong and plenty as she grappled with everything that happened. Her footsteps finally stopped in front of a diner as she looked at the menu in the window. God, she was hungry. She rested a hand on her lower belly as she read the menu.

Sue would kill for some potato skins and a peanut butter banana milkshake.

Suddenly someone slammed into her side and she barely had time to register her purse was gone. "Hey!" She screamed as the person took off running. Sue took off after him and knew she wasn't going to catch up. Anger filled her and the next thing she knew the thief was floating slightly off the ground. She panicked, the thief slammed hard into the pavement, and Sue raced over to grab her purse.

"You shouldn't steal," she felt bad since she could see the broken nose and hear the groans of pain. God, she was turning into a monster or something. She hadn't even wanted to use whatever was inside of her, but it just happened. She walked quickly back towards the diner and hoped no one saw.

She wanted like two orders of potato skins now and a handbook to whatever was happening to her.

Eddie couldn't forget the conversations he had with people on the network. There was no organized resistance and no way to know what was really going on with these alleged angels. He didn't feel comfortable with any of it but he had to make watching Jill a priority, as always. They come first. But Eddie had left Jill alone from time to time with their roommate Nancy in order to search the grounds for any potential threat. It was difficult being the only guardian around. He actually missed Angeline.

His trips took him further and further away from the condos as he explored the city. The hot weather didn't bother him like it was bothering Jill. In fact, Eddie thrived in it and he enjoyed it. It was a lot better than being up in that tundra of Montana. he had been happy to move to California even though he knew that Jill and Adrian hated it.

He was about to step in when a man stole a woman's purse but he took a step back when she more than handled it herself. What was going on? First, someone claimed to be a nephilim and now he watched someone use magic or some other ability to disable a thief.

Eddie quickly dialed 911 for the fallen man before he followed the woman towards the diner. She looked a lot like Lissa. So much so that Eddie had to get really close to her before he could ascertain that she was not actually Lissa.

Before she stepped inside the diner, Eddie grabbed her shoulder gently to get her attention.

"I called an ambulance for him. I thought you'd want to know."

The hand on her shoulder had a flicker of fear flash through her. God, was this how Carrie had felt any time she lost control? Sue pursed her lips and glanced at the boy who had stopped her. Maybe he hadn't saw? Maybe he just wanted her number? It wouldn't be the first time someone had tried to pick her up.

The words out of his mouth had her stomach plummeting to her feet. A faint cracking sound echoed near her ear and she tried to calm herself down. The damage was done. A fracture in the diner window appeared out of nowhere.

Sue supposed it could have been worse. The window could have exploded or something. She was figuring out her emotions were tied to the powers. With the baby growing inside of her she knew her emotions were going to get more chaotic and she was suddenly worried she was going to cause real damage.

Carrie had a good life here and now Sue was the one who didn't know what was happening to her. How the tables had turned!

"I don't-" Her lie deflated part way and she bit her lower lip as she clutched the strap of her bag. She had wanted to say she didn't know what the boy was talking about, but the words wouldn't leave her mouth. "He wasn't supposed to get hurt."

She could feel her nails digging into the palm of her hand as she kept tightening her grip on the purse.

"He stole my purse."

That was a weak excuse, but it was true. The man had tried to steal from her and she hadn't just stood by and let it happen! Sure, she had no idea what she was doing, but it wasn't like she had killed the guy.

"Did you think he was going to hurt you?" Eddie asked.

He wasn't one to judge much. Eddie had made so many decisions that the other guardians had declared irresponsible, up to and including killing one Moroi to protect another which was incredibly controversial. But Eddie was trained to act quickly to save lives and then ask questions later. He didn't even know he was attacking another Moroi until it was too late.

Aggression could be triggered so easily in people, especially when they were trained to react a certain way. But Eddie knew the same could be said, in maybe even more dramatic ways, for people who were untrained. This girl just seemed.... scared.

His eyes looked up and traced the crack in the window before he looked back at the tall blonde. She looked so much like his friend Lissa that he had to stop the impulse to hug her. The resemblance also made him feel protective over this girl even though he had just met her.

He also feared her, though he would never show it on his face. He was used to a degree of uncertainty in his life. Especially as the guardian of Moroi with Spirit ability. Nobody really knew what Spirit could do, only bits and pieces of what they were learning from Lissa and Adrian as they went. Eddie had learned to expect the unexpected.

"Hey, it's okay. I'm not going to tell anyone. But what you did back there? You know you can't just run around doing that, right? Even if someone steals your purse."

"No, I think he just wanted my purse. I mean he might have hurt me if I had just tried to take it back normally," Sue hated feeling so uncertain and scared. She had felt scared the day Carrie had destroyed so much of their lives. Despite that fear, she had sought out the girl and now she was paying some strange price. Whatever Carrie had done had changed her forever. Now there wasn't just a baby on the way, now there were powers she didn't understand or know how to even control.

Were her powers even the same as Carrie's?

She breathed in through her nose and out through her mouth, like Miss Desjardin had taught them to do during gym class. It helped calm the breathing and the person down.

He said he wasn't going to tell. He was also lightly lecturing her for her actions and for some reason that made Sue give the faintest of sad smiles. It was almost like she had been caught looking at someone else's test and he didn't want her to go down that path.

"I know," she finally said as she looked down at her shoes. How long until her feet started swelling? She was going to have to figure out doctor appointments and everything on her own now.

"It wasn't on purpose...I can't- these things just started happening." She looked up at him with a faint detremination in her eyes. She wasn't going to wallow in self pity or some such thing, no she was going to figure out how to survive. "You don't seem surprised by any of this. Do you have experience with whatever this is? Can you help me?"

Her stomach growled loudly and she couldn't help the way she glanced towards a table. God, those potato skins sounded so freaking good still. That and maybe like a grilled cheese with pickles and mustard.

She glanced back at him. "I'm Sue."

He listened to her carefully, observing her down to the grumble of her stomach indicating that she was hungry. He nodded at her, jaw set in a hard line.

"Eddie," he replied. "You want to go inside and grab something to eat? We can talk about it in there."

He felt for her. He couldn't help himself. So many of his friends had gone through things that they couldn't understand at the time. Eddie hadn't gone through a change like that. He knew exactly what he was as a dhampir and what he was capable of. He had been raised knowing exactly that and nothing crazy like being shadow kissed had ever happened to him. Maybe it was that or maybe it was the fact that she looked like Lissa and it make him homesick. Maybe it was just who Eddie was on the inside. He wanted to help.

He opened the glass door and nodded towards the inside. He waited for Sue to go inside before closing the door and following her towards a booth. Then he slid across from her, making sure to sit facing the door just in case. Some habits were impossibly hard to break. Eddie was always on guard, even when he was off duty.

"I'm not surprised by anything anymore, Sue," he said. "I've seen way too many things, up to and including getting kidnapped and brought here. I would believe almost anything. In my world, I saw my friends struggle with powers they didn't understand."

It was frustrating and terrible; fumbling blindly in the dark with something inexplicable. Eddie was always on the sidelines but that was the sanest vantage point.

"That's the first time anything like that happened to you?"

She merely nodded.

God, yes, she wanted all the food.

Sue flashed him the tiniest of smiles as he held the door open for her. This was surreal in a way. Some strange boy seemed to know about powers. She shouldn't have been surprised, not when she had been supposedly kidnapped by Angels. When she had first arrived here she couldn't imagine what they'd want with her. Then, well, she had met with Carrie. Her answer had become scarily clear and now she was just lost.

She slid into the booth and set her purse down on the bench beside her so it was between her and the wall. A habit. She left her cellphone inside of it even though she was kind of tempted to Google what she shouldn't eat.

Her gaze was on him as he spoke. Lips turned down into a slight frown as she grabbed menus from behind the condiment bottles. She set one down in front of him and barely glanced at her own menu as she let it sink in that he knew more people with powers. There were more than just Carrie and her out there. Did Carrie know?

"...when I first got here. That is when I first experienced the power. Made everything in the apartment levitate." She had thought it was Carrie, but the feeling inside of her had told her no. Sue was the reason things were happening now. Yes, Carrie still had powers, but she wasn't the one losing control in such drastic ways.

"I knew a person back home who had powers like this. She...looked into my mind right before saving me from a collapsing building. She didn't make it out." Sue was being careful what she said about Carrie, about what had happened in their town. There was no way she was going to betray the girl's trust. "I don't know if she passed them on somehow or if they were always there, but here we are."

The waitress arrived and Sue wasted no time ordering her strange combo of food. There was a slight look of surprise on the waitress' face, but she paid it no mind. "Oh, and just water to drink, thank you."

Her fingers fiddled with the edges of the menu as she waited for Eddie to order. She had questions and she hoped he could help some. Dealing with two unknowns was crazy and any help she could get at this point for at least one of them? Well, it would be great.

Sue was lucky in that Eddie didn't bat an idea at her choice of a varied and wide arrangement of foods. Dhampirs were notoriously ravenous. They could eat everything and anything and were hungry at all times. Eddie ate a lot all of the time and there wasn't an ounce of fat on his body. It was a definite upside of his species. He ordered his own array of food and topped it off with a large Coke.

Once the waitress was gone he settled his eyes back on Sue. She looked very troubled. Not everyone wanted to be who they were but they were stuck with it anyway. Eventually, you had to accept it because the alternative was worse. That was the case usually but not always. Eddie was sensitive to that too.

"It sounds like she did something to you," Eddie said. He didn't know anything for sure and was just spitballing. But he had to start somewhere and that was an easy place to start. She had powers and looked into her mind. Lissa had saved Rose once too and it had changed them both.

"It changed you." He frowned at her. He still felt bad for her but food was on the way and they both appeared to be more relaxed. Eddie was still ready to break into action at a moment's notice.

"You don't have any friends here from back home? Anyone that can help you figure this out?"

Eddie didn't want to have to worry about her nearly killing people in the streets again. Because next time it might not have been nearly. That guy was a jerk and probably deserved what he got but Sue's temper was bound to get the best of her if she let it.
