WHO Kai and Claire |
The apartment seemed calm. Michael was day sleeping as always, Shane and Eve were off doing something, and Claire was just sitting on the living room floor. A laptop was resting on her knees as she attempted to look up some Latin words she had written down. Amelia’s book had shown back up and that had intrigued her to no end. Just why was this book following her? She had just finished typing a sentence into a translate program when the floor below her began to shake. Claire reached out and gripped the laptop with both hands. Her eyes widened as she realized the couch she was leaning her back against was also shaking. The whole room was shaking! She had never really experienced an earthquake before and her mind was having problems comprehending what was going on. It was a loud noise that let her know she was in possible real trouble. The wall flexed and bowed and then the crack began. Claire shoved her laptop to the side and stood up. She had to warn Michael, but how was this going to work? He didn't do days. Claire’s stomach did a flip and a wave of nausea swept through her. Great, on top of going to die in this room she was also going to suffer from motion sickness. The apartment door flew open and she couldn't help the scream that escaped her. Claire slapped a hand over her mouth as she tried to get her heart to restart. This day was just getting worse. Kai didn't know about the vervain and he was going to be pissed. He was probably already pissed she had tattled to Boonie. Yeah, she was pretty sure she was going to die. There wasn’t enough liquor in this fucking city to get Kai over the mood that he was in. He had to give it to Harry though, he was trying. Their apartment was littered with bottles that that they had gone through trying to get Kai over what happened the night he took on Bonnie. How much did it really take to get a vampire drunk? A lot, apparently. And Kai was still going. Or trying to. He was just getting back to the apartment complex with a bag of bourbon and scotch tucked in his hand, heading up to the roof to waste the day away, when it felt like the city began to fight against him. The floor shook under him and Kai dropped the bottles to the floor in order to steady himself. Really?! It felt like something was trying to escape from under his feet and his first thought was to escape until he brought his gaze up and it landed on Claire’s door. Of all the places he’d end up at this moment it had to be right here. He was still pissed that she had tattled. Claire had basically caused Bonnie to toss a leash around his neck but that didn’t stop the Heretic from sighing in frustration as he rolled his eyes and basically kicked the door open. In a flash he was inside the apartment and pulling Claire up into his arms. He gave her a look when he realized that she was literally just standing there about to freak instead of trying to get herself to safety. What was it about this one? Kai turned just as the windows of the apartment shattered and shards flew towards them, his back took most of the damage as he took off out of the apartment. Eventually they ended up in Kai’s shared apartment and carefully tucked Claire away in the corner of the living room, grabbing the coffee table he flipped it to where it was standing up enough at an angle to block her. “Don’t move!” He shouted down to her, his dark eyes glancing around the empty apartment. He could hear the destruction going on outside with his enhanced hearing and he pressed his palm firmly against the table to keep it steady. Claire barely had time to do anything before Kai was grabbing her. She wanted to struggle, but the sound of shattering glass made her freeze. Shards went flying, but she was more surprised that Kai was saving her so she barely noticed them. Why? Kai just wanted to toy with her! It wasn't like he actually cared about her so why was he doing this? “We have to go back,” she nearly sobbed out. They had left her roommates, if they were even home. She had to go back and make sure they weren't there! She also needed to make sure the spellbook was still secured under her mattress. “Kai!” Her protests were useless and soon enough she was being tucked into a corner of an apartment littered with booze bottles. Even as a human she could the place reeked like an exploded liquor store. “Kai,” she slammed her hands against the coffee table and actually felt a few tears fall down her face. The room was shaking, she felt sick, and she was worried about her roommates. The whole building seemed to groan and then as if a switch had been flipped the shaking stopped. She bit her lower lip as she waited for the shaking to start again or for Kai to yell at her. The shaking didn't seem to start back up. “You left them,” she yelled as she hit a hand against the table. “What if they are hurt?” Worrying about her friends was probably only going to upset him, but she couldn't help it. Her friends mattered to her. “I need to go back!” If she had asked him why Kai wasn’t sure how to really respond. Kai couldn’t even figure it out. There was a reason he was keeping her around and it had more to do with the fact that she was fun to torment. She amused him. And surprised him. And in some weird way he felt like she needed someone to be there for her. God, she was a little sister type and Kai did so bad with those. How would any of that work out in Claire’s favor? He had killed his sisters. Hung one off the banister and killed the other at her wedding. They might have deserved it though. At least Jo did. He listened to Claire protest against his help and he literally ignored her until he had her tucked away and secured under the table. His hand held the thick wood in place as he waited for the rumbling below them to stop and even when it started to he didn’t let her free right away. He waited to see if things started over again and finally after a few minutes he tossed the table to the side and glared down at her. “They’re not hurt.” He snapped down at her, “How do I know?” He asked before she could yell back at him, “Because I’m a vampire and can smell blood, remember?” Turning away from her he winced as he pulled off his jacket and effectively pulled the glass from his skin as he dropped the leather to the floor and rolled his shoulders. God, he hoped Bonnie felt that. Okay, so he was a little bitter. That wasn’t going to change anytime soon. “What the hell were you doing just standing there? That glass could have killed you.” Kai saw that look on her face when he rushed into the apartment and knew he had to get her the hell out of there. “Relax. Your apartment isn’t exactly safe right now. Nobody's there anyway.” Not that he could tell. Though Michael was a vampire and he was sensing for the actual living. Not that he would have saved them anyway. He moved to the window and pulled back the curtain to gaze outside at the damage and cursed under his breath at the sight. “Well, that’s not good.” He turned to face Claire and narrowed his eyes at her. “Looks like we're stuck together for awhile. Which is great because we have SO much to catch up on.” His anger was clear and she may have recoiled slightly. Her back hit the wall as she stared up at the vampire with wide eyes. He was yelling at her and her brain was kind of short circuiting. He had rescued her, kept her safe, and he was yelling at her as if he cared. Claire was beyond confused and maybe also a little bit in shock. What was even going on? A faint gasp escaped her when she saw the blood on his back. She started to reach a hand out and just stopped. He was a vampire, he would heal, but now she felt guilty. “I was getting ready to go find…” Her defense fell flat the second Kai was telling her the apartment was empty. Where were her friends? Were they safe? God, they were going to freak out so much if they came back to apartment and she wasn't there. Her laptop had just been left on the floor and it was probably damaged at this point. She opened her mouth a few times to argue, to say just one thing in her own defense, but each time she closed her mouth. Slowly she pulled herself up off the floor and moved cautiously to a window. It looked like a scene from an end of the world movie. Her fingers spasmed slightly as she took in the sight of various fires. Unwanted memories surfaced and she swore she could smell the smoldering rubble. Monica's voice echoed in her mind and the only thing that yanked her from traumatic thoughts was Kai. She looked at him, noticed his look, and took a step away from him. “It isn't my fault,” she said automatically even though she didn't know what the real problem was. She didn't know exactly what Bonnie had done or if she had done something yet. She knew Bonnie wanted to kill Kai and now she was getting the feeling something had happened between Bonnie and Kai. What had happened was pretty much her fault. She had lit the flame that turned into the raging inferno of plotting against Kai. She was probably going to pay and she had no escape. Kai had to remind himself that he shouldn’t have cared. Like a switch he had to flip or something. Kai didn’t exactly know how to care about anyone other than himself because that’s what he had been doing for his entire life, which was what made this so weird and difficult for him. Caring would eventually make him weak and he couldn’t afford that. But he did care. Some part of him deep down kept tugging at him and it frustrated him. Fucking Luke and his stupid idiotic emotions. Why did he feel so fucking much? He could blame it on his little brother all he wanted but the fact was it wasn’t just him. And that bothered him. Something had to be done to get him to stop caring. Something had to be done fast. Kai shot her a look and arched a brow in question, waiting for her to finish. When she didn’t he simply shook his head. “You really need to learn how to take care of yourself better.” He shot back at her before resting his gaze back outside. Kai had just been out there minutes ago. Trying to find a way to forget his troubles. He was a heretic, he didn’t really have anything to fear, but when you saw something like that with your own two eyes it was something that was hard to look away from. Snorting softly at the way she defended herself Kai finally moved away from the window and wished he hadn’t dropped the precious cargo back in the hallway. He was craving and this wasn’t going to end well for either of them. “Which part?” He asked her as he moved over and dramatically fell back onto the couch as he watched her. “The part where Bonnie was brought into my business or the part where she thought it was amusing to put a leash around my neck?” He arched a brow, “Quite frankly both lead right back to you.” And they did. Kai would have been content and happy right now if Claire hadn’t tried to get some help. Hell, in Kai’s opinion he could have totally been worse when it came to Claire and she had betrayed him by turning to Bonnie. Her lips formed a faint O of surprise when Kai explained how it was all her fault. A leash? What did that even mean? “I asked Bonnie some questions because I wanted information, I even said I wasn't asking for help. She is the one who said I needed help!” Claire turned from the window with a stubborn look on her face. She hadn't meant for any of this to happen. “I didn't know talking to Bonnie was going to cause all this,” she threw her hands up in the air dramatically. “Besides, full offense, I contacted her after you branded me!” A finger was pointed at him as she narrowed her eyes as she glared. “I was in my right to find out how to defend myself.” Kai had marked her, left her neck raw, and she had reacted. Where was the problem with that? “I did what I thought was right and I didn't know your twisted history with her at that point. I'm not from Mystic Falls, I don't know all the weird rules and fuck you's going on!” Her face turned a slight shade of red as she got worked up. “I'm trying to survive and I don't care what you think of me.” She had to take a deep breath and she swayed faintly on her feet. Her stomach was still queasy from the earthquake and now her head hurt. Claire sniffed once, twice, and somehow managed to hold back all her tears. Her eyes were burning with unshed tears, but she was holding them all back her sheer stubbornness. Kai wasn't going to watch her lose it! “I'm just trying to live.” She raised her chin with an angry look on her face. Kai rolled his eyes as she went on to say she hadn’t asked for help. Claire should have known by now that people were there for her even when she didn’t want them to be. Even Kai, which was weirdly twisted if you really thought about it, but hey, he was Kai. He did the unexplainable. Right now Claire was just caught in the crossfires of Kai’s bad mood and he was taking it out on her. “What you thought was right?” He made a nearly disgusted face, “And look at how well that turned out!” He growled in return. “It was cute though.” He finally nodded his head. “How they all came together to ban against the reject. I was impressed.” “And I almost killed Bonnie too.” Now he was just talking out loud as he narrowed his eyes at the air and thought about his fight with Bonnie. “It was amazing. She put up one hell of a fight. I even got close enough to siphon her as I bit her. You have noo idea how long I’ve been waiting to do that. Her magic and blood together? Kinda like crack, I swear.” He laughed and took in a breath. “But then she threw in a wrench I wasn’t expecting. I don’t think she actually meant to do it this way..because really when you think about it I heal fast and can just torture her over and over again, but she linked us. Now it’s like a fucking leash. Like she’s watching me to make sure I be a good boy. Do you have any idea how annoying that it? To be able to sit here and not be able to do what I want to do.” He paused and looked at Claire again, “To you.” “Well excuse me for not being Team Kai after you terrorized me the first time. I reacted accordingly you...you...asshat!” Not exactly Claire’s finest moment, but she was shaken. She was trapped in a room with Kai and there was a nasty chance Kol might show up. How did she keep getting herself into these type of situations? What exactly had she done to piss off the higher powers of the Universe? All Claire ever wanted to do was learn things, but instead she kept having to deal with vampires. The Universe sure seemed to hate Claire Danvers. Her hands shook for a second when Kai said his bit about how annoying it was he couldn't do things to her. The threat was implied and she reacted without thinking. A loud echo filled the room and she honestly looked surprised that she had actually slapped Kai. Her mouth fell open and she kind of stared at her hand in disbelief. “I...I’m sorry?” Claire awkwardly pushed some hair behind her ears. Had she just been blinded by rage? She couldn't remember a time where that had ever happened before. This place and the situations she had been forced into were changing her slightly. “I don't know what came over me.” Her voice sounded lost and confused. She was near a breaking point all because everything was getting to be too much. Kai furrowed his brows when she called him an asshat and swore that she could have pulled off a better comeback in his head. She was angry and he couldn’t blame her but he was angry too. And he honestly had a right to be here. Bonnie would have kept her distance if Claire hadn’t opened up that jar of worms. Now Kai was stuck in the most difficult position of his life. And he didn’t know how to react to it. He wanted to rip Bonnie apart and he couldn’t. Because whatever he did to her he would feel too. She had tried to use the same curse he had on her and Elena and it had backfired tenfold. Bonnie was probably in the same position that he was. Hating herself for letting this shit happen. But Kai didn’t care about how Bonnie felt he just wanted his fucking freedom back. He was about to tell her to stop being so damn dramatic when she actually reached out and slapped him. Hard enough that his face actually turned with the hit. He wasn’t expecting it and for a second all Kai could do was flex his jaw some as he tried to get the stinging to stop while he stared at her. Was she fucking insane? This wasn’t someone who wouldn‘t hurt her, this was Kai. The ultimate “does stupid and drastic things in the spur of the moment’ guy. Before Kai knew what he was doing his hand was wrapped around Claire’s throat and he squeezed just a little too tightly as he glared down at her. This was not the right time to piss him off, he was already off the henges at it was. Kai wasn’t even sure if his blood was still in her system and that was the only reason he hadn’t snapped her neck right then and there. Overdramatic? He really was. “Just because I can’t do things, doesn’t mean I won’t.” He warned, “It’d be so easy and so worth it right now.” A lot of people often wondered if Claire was insane. It was actually highly probable considering how her life had turned out. A person needed to be a little bit insane so they didn't have a complete and utter breakdown. Sadly her insane slap was going to cause her a lot of pain. Kai’s hand closed around her throat and all Claire could think about was the fact her friends would be livid if she died. She brought her hands up and wrapped them around Kai’s wrist as she gasped for air. “H-hurts,” she could feel the stinging in her eyes and the fight to not cry as getting harder. “I said s-sorry!” Claire tugged at his wrist as she stared him down. She was stubborn to the end, even as tears finally started welling up and over her lower lashes. She didn't sob, plead, or beg. She just stood there crying while glaring. “You're st-still an asshat most of the t-time.” Kai was a complicated person. He terrorized her, he brought her burgers and Carebears, and now he was choking her hard enough to bruise. “It won't happen again.” She had to be insane. Maybe that was why Kai adored her so much. She was a little crazy in the head. He was, and crazy recognized crazy, right? Kai was so much more though. Look at the examples. He had just rescued her moments ago and now he was standing contemplating whether or not he should go through with killing her. Who did that? He stared her down as she spoke her struggled words and for the briefest of seconds his grip tightened just a bit more. She was right. She did say sorry. And anything that happened right now was his fault for bringing her snarky little ass down to his apartment to keep her safe. He watched the tears well up and fall over her cheeks and Kai sighed. See? Horrible at this big brother stuff. He was cursed with a cruel temper and he’d never really get that under his control. “And you’re still a fucking brat.” He bit back and finally released her. The bruises were already starting to show on her pale skin and Kai pursed his lips. “Fuck..” if Bonnie saw those she would know exactly where they came from. Then the most amusing thought popped into his head. She’d be in trouble with her friends too. “Good.” He told her, a grin flashing for a moment. “I should heal those.” Claire’s headache was growing with each passing second and Kai choking her was only causing it to grow more intense. When he finally let her to she couldn't help the way she breathed in dramatically. Air, air going to her lungs without a problem! She was ecstatic enough that she let the brat comment slide. It was the grin that had her stepping back a step. Kai's mood was giving her whiplash at this point. One second he was nearly killing her and the next he was offering to heal her. Wait, no, she knew what that meant! Her eyes widened as she began to shake her head. Blood, he wanted her to drink blood. “I'll wear a scarf,” she replied even as she knew he probably wouldn't fall for that. While he might have been insane, he was also perceptive. Kai was a dangerous person to be around. That thought alone chilled her because she realized he was going to figure out she had done more than just talk to Bonnie. Stefan had given her vervain. She didn't want to know how Kai would react to that, but she could only imagine it would be violently. His attempts at compelling her wouldn't work anymore and it would only anger him more. She felt her heart clamoring on her chest as she took a few more steps backward. He was going to find out and she was going to die. Normally the sound of a racing heart was like music to Kai’s ears. Even Claire’s racing heart, but today something just seemed extra off about it. She was terrified. Why? Kai had healed her before so it shouldn’t have been a big deal but the way she was backing away from him and the look on her face gave off all the blood red warning signs. She was hiding something from him. “What’s wrong with you?” He asked as he arched a brow and took a step towards her. But she was still backing away and her heart was like a delicious drum beating faster and faster that Kai couldn’t help the feeling that was taking over him. He hadn’t fed since the night he took on Bonnie and blood bags just weren’t the same. Claire was basically teasing him with how scared she was. “Claire .. stop..rela-” he tried to warn her but that bloodlust was tearing him apart inside. Fuck it. He was going to heal her anyway. He reached out and caught her wrist and instantly pulled it to his mouth. His eyes went black as he dug his fangs in hungrily but the moment the blood hit his tongue and he swallowed back he was pulling away with a choked growl. The vervain in her system stung and for a long moment all he could do was stare at her in anger. How the hell did she know about vervain and more importantly who was she working with to get it. “Well, well” he growled, “Someone has some explaining to do.” She couldn’t calm down because her mind was freaking out. Vervain was a weapon against vampires and it was a form of protection for her, but now she was pretty sure it was going to be her demise. Claire hissed in pain when Kai grabbed her wrist. She didn’t have time to warn him, though she wasn’t sure if she wanted to, and he was striking. The result was fascinating and horrifying at the same time. Vervain really did hurt vampires. Claire knew she had broken their deal and it was in that moment she realized she may have put her friends’ lives in danger. They may have all had the vervain now, but it didn’t stop a vampire from just snapping their necks. All the little miscalculations were adding up because she had done things so rashly. She wrapped a hand over her bloody wrist as she met his gaze. “Stefan gave it to me,” she remarked with a faint tilt of her chin. The funny thing was she didn’t realize Stefan was a vampire. She thought he was just some guy from Mystic Falls that knew how to handle himself around vampires. Kai had said people in Mystic Falls only looked out for themselves, but so far a few people from that messed up town had been willing to help her. “He said it would stop you from compelling me...and I forgot about the fact you couldn’t drink it.” She hadn’t really forgotten, she had just not focused as much on that little bit of information. “I can...just stop drinking it? I mean it should leave my system. It was a mistake, one I can fix,” she glanced down at her wrist and winced. Blood was still welling up under her fingers. The dark red stood out against her pale flesh, a nasty sight. “Stefan..” He choked through a laugh. Why the hell were all the Mystic Falls so-gooders suddenly involved in his business? Because of fucking Bonnie, that’s why. None of them had ever even glanced in Claire’s direction until Bonnie called him out and now Stefan of all people was trying to save her from him? He was amused and angry and felt it was kind of ironic at the same time. He could feel his mouth and throat healing and he wiped away the tainted blood off his lips as he stared at Claire while she tried to think of ways to get things back on track. She had broken their deal. Which to Kai meant that all bets were off now. “A vampire giving someone vervain to protect them from another vampire, kind of traitorous don’t you think?” Seriously, where was the loyalty? It did put that in the forefront of his mind though. He would have to warn Kol and Harry that they had vervain close again. “I don’t think you forgot at all.” He gave her an accusing look, “What else have they done for you?” He was naturally curious. How much had they invested in little Clairebear once they found out Kai’s attention was one her. Was she even worth their time or were they just making it seem like they cared? “It takes days to leave your system.” Kai pointed out, “And I don’t really feel like waiting that long to feed.” He cocked his head and chuckled softly as he looked down at her wrist and the inviting scene that was taking it’s course. “Maybe I should let you choose which roommate who gets to take your place.” Seriously Kai needed to teach everyone a fucking lesson. He was tired of people poking their noses into his business and if he turned Claire that would make a statement. Biting into his own wrist, he didn’t care that Bonnie would feel it, he arched his brow and held it out to her. “Drink up.” When she hesitated he arched a brow at her. “Or you can stand there and bleed to death. Your choice, princess.” Wait, Stefan was a vampire? Claire’s eyes got huge as she digested that. He had seemed so nice and caring. He had also seemed so helpful, but now she was feeling very confused. Why had he helped her if he was vampire? She supposed not all vampires were huge asshats like Kai, but until Stefan she hadn’t really run across a case of vampirism to make her think otherwise. Ironic really, since she had told Betty not to judge her friend for turning into a vampire. God, this was all so messed up! “Stefan said...he was going to get Bonnie or someone to put a protection barrier on my apartment,” she said meekly. That hole she was digging with her actions was getting that much closer to six feet deep. “He suggested I leave the apartment until it was done, but I refused.” A stupid move in hindsight. Each word was just like another slam of a shovel into dirt. She could practically see her own grave from where she was standing. Claire had messed up something awful. She paled considerably and it wasn’t just because of the blood loss. “My roommates have been drinking vervain,” she squeezed her injured wrist even more and tried not to sway. A cold feeling was starting to seep into her bones. Of course the might have been in her head, but at this point she was pretty sure it didn’t matter. She was losing blood and it just wouldn’t stop. When he told her to drink she didn’t right away. Her gaze went to her blood drenched hand and the fingers kind of twitched, droplets falling sporadically to the ground now. Huh, she was ruining the carpet. Death wasn’t something she wanted. It wasn’t something she had ever wanted so she did something she would learn to regret. Claire reached out and took Kai’s wrist. Her face paled even more before she awkwardly put her mouth to his wrist. Okay, this was one of the weirdest things she had ever done. She sucked blood from his arm in an attempt to make her own injuries to heal. “Did he now?” Kai had to laugh at that one. A protection spell, really? Is that the best thing they could come up with to try and protect her from him. “Not that it would actually do anything. I can just suck the magic away.” He did give Stefan points for trying to come up with something. Always the hero. Even to someone he didn’t know. It was actually kind of surprising to him. It was true. The more Claire spoke the more she dug that hole for herself. His eyes narrowed and he was distracted by the scent of blood that completely filled the room. It wasn’t exactly the best thing considering they had an apartment full of vampires now, but Kai didn’t care. Just do it Claire. Kai was watching her while there was a war going on inside of his head. On the one hand things were completely off the table when it came to their deal. She had broken it the moment she allowed Stefan to help her. And on the other hand he did care about her in a way. Part of him knew that what he was about to do would cause a shitstorm of backlash on him. But part of him didn’t care either. Maybe he could get her to keep it a secret. Her lips latched onto his wrist and his lips curled up into a smirk as he watched her drink. He tilted his his as he thought about it some more and finally he sighed when she knew she had had enough. “Don’t worry, everything’s going to be just fine.” His voice was soft but held the tiniest hint of amusement in them and without a second thought Kai reached up with his free hand and quickly snapped her neck. He caught her before she fell and glanced around his apartment for a long second. “Shit.” He finally said out loud as he laid her onto the couch and moved to grab a blood bag from the fridge. How was he going to get out of this one? With just a little manipulation. It was the only way. |
