Valentine’s Day was never a day that Katherine actually looked forward to. It was a day that you were supposed to celebrate the love you shared for that special someone and really, how many times did a girl have to live through that miserable day without someone real to share it with? Her love had died a long time ago, and any hopes of reclaiming that we long lost. The Salvatore brothers would always hold a place in her little black heart but tonight neither of them were on her mind. The one she wasn’t supposed to have, however, was. It had been days since Katherine had gone after Cami to get revenge for her going after Lucien. It wasn’t planned but it was an opportunity that Katherine couldn’t pass up once she had seen Camille all alone in her office admiring those pathetic flowers. Aurora had come in for the save which had Katherine’s need for more revenge rising but that was put on hold for the moment. The night had been spent in typical Katherine and Lucien fashion. Lucien had messaged her to meet him for dinner in a fancy restaurant in downtown LA and after one too many drinks they had managed to make it back to Lucien’s apartment barely capable of holding back from ripping each other’s clothes off before they were inside. Katherine’s entire body was still tingling from Lucien’s touch. The bite marks on Lucien’s neck were healing up as they laid on the floor in front of the fireplace with the blanket they tugged off the couch barely covering them. She stared at the fire for a long time as she stretched out and her fingertips traced invisible patterns along his chest as a smile played on her lips. Okay, maybe she did like him. “You know you still owe me a present.” “Do I?” Lucien could only look at her a little mischiefly as he lay there beside the ever elusive Katherine Pierce. Ah, but not so elusive tonight was she? No, the lady was very present in every way possible. The night had gone on without a hitch, the two of them enjoying dinner and barely making it through until dessert. She looked gorgeous, as always and throughout dinner, he reminded her of how much he wanted her and undoubtedly needed her while having pleasant conversation. Of course, that conversation did consist of the two of them and then other future plans the two might have had. Nothing here was easy for them. The two of them fighting to get what was needed for them both, to get what they deserved. In all honesty, Lucien didn’t much care for the fighting as of now. Getting back at someone was just another way for them to know that he still cared and perhaps he didn’t as much as he once had. He wanted to find his place in LA and he had. He was a successful businessman and of course, his business was a little questionable, but most businesses were, weren’t they? No, it wasn’t just scantily clad women he dealt with on a daily basis. Lucien was well on his way to becoming successful but the money meant nothing even if it was earned. What was he to do with it? Buy a house? Perhaps a loft in one of those tall buildings? No, it wasn’t quite possible that he could do that. At this point what the hybrid did or didn’t do shouldn’t have been a concern to him. It was clear that NIk wasn’t out to kill him, to get him. Why not just be happy for once in his bloody life. It was clear that past few weeks had him thinking. Not that Katherine knew what was on his mind, they didn’t do that. However, they did this. Being rather romantic was one thing, but so romantic that it ached was quite another. And right now, Lucien was aching for this lovely beauty. “I suppose I do,” he relented with a teasing grin as he sat up and moved, his body hovering over hers. He leaned his head down, giving her a much needed kiss before the vampire was on his feet. Luckily, the little vampire who had shown up in his apartment was out for the night, no doubt having her own little wicked fun. Lucien was gone and then back, his body beside hers as he shifted to his side and he offered her a box. It was rectangular in shape and Lucien watched Katherine as she accepted it. “Thought you might like these and what can I say? I prefer you in diamonds and nothing else,” he teased her, leaning over to nip at her neck and then her shoulder. In the box was a necklace and earring set, bright, shiny and expensive of course as he wouldn’t have the woman he cared about walking around in anything that was less than acceptable. Katherine was actually a little surprised when Lucien got up. She had only been teasing when she said he owed her something but damn, he was coming up on all ends tonight leaving Katherine with nothing to complain about. Which was actually kind of nice when she thought about it. It seemed like everything was actually working out here for her and she didn’t want to do anything that would jinx it. She knew how easily things could turn around here. There was more than one major player here that wanted her dead and all it took was one person to realize they were tired of dealing with silas to come and take her out just to get to him. Cause let's face it. No one was going to go after Elena first. She was on her side staring into the fire when Lucien returned and she arched a brow at the box. She wasn’t that surprised that he had gone for the expensive because Lucien didn’t do simple but she was surprised that he had actually thought this out. Katherine couldn’t help the way her lips curled up into a smile as her fingertips ran along the box for a moment. She could feel his eyes on her as she flicked the box open and she stared at all the beautiful. The diamonds glistened in the light of the fireplace and she looked at Lucien from under her lashes. “So, you just knew I’d be here with you on Valentine’s Day in these and nothing else?” She didn’t even let him answer as she leaned in and pressed her lips to his. “They’re beautiful.” No, it was quite possible that Katherine might not have been here with him. There was always that possibility, wasn’t there? That she could get taken away from Los Angeles, or perhaps Nik would wake up on the wrong side of the bed and throw himself into a tantrum and take Katherine down. Of course, Katherine had many other enemies, he was sure of it. A woman so beautiful and cunning didn’t go throughout life without turning heads. He knew she was a wanted woman and it made him worry a bit for her. He tried to not let himself get attached, there was just no way he could. One moment she could be gone. One moment, it could have been his doing. Of course, that was if worse came to worst. It didn’t matter the deal, or who was after NIk this day or the next, the truth was, they were on different sides. Luckily, they didn’t talk about that. Davina had come and gone and by now, Nik was planning something much worse. Lucien could only find out what it was. “You’re beautiful darling,” he said then, looking at her matter of factly, then tipped his head to pluck the diamonds from the box. “Let’s see how this looks on you,” he whispered then, fastening the diamonds around her neck so they hung low, leaving that bit of mystery of how low the diamonds would dip in that cleavage he loved so much. “Exquisite.” He breathed, his eyes on the jewelry, the way it contrasted with her skin tone, it was gorgeous. The flames of the fire made them shine much brighter and he reached for her, pulling the vampire much closer. “Even if you weren’t here with me tonight, these would have always been for you. Nobody else could come close to being gorgeous enough.” Katherine knew. Oh, she knew. She knew that they were on different sides. Lucien might have wanted Klaus’ downfall and he might have even worked to get it when he knew that it could definitely be accomplished, but if there was no sure way Lucien would side with hybrid to save his own skin. Not like she could fault him for that. She would always choose the winning side herself. If worse came to worse, she would choose the side she felt would come out on top. Even if that meant fucking over her side to make that happen. Survival always came first. Until it didn’t. Katherine knew there was more. She had always wanted more but had never been bold enough to go for it. She was sassy and seductive and she could get anything in the world she wanted. Except for the one thing she wanted the most. She was always infinitely and utterly alone. A lot like Klaus. But those what ifs were so damn sweet and Katherine found herself daydreaming about what could be. Was that all it was? She twisted just enough for Lucien to lock the diamonds around her neck, pulling her hair out of the way. Her fingers traced down along the diamonds and she lazily smiled at his words. She couldn’t trust Lucien for the life of her but he was sweet and that showed in the look in her eyes. Her fingertips traced along his cheek and she shook her head. “Careful, handsome. Start whispering sweet nothings in my ear and you’re gonna make me yearn for things I can’t have.” “But I can’t help it.” And he couldn’t. Lucien felt like a child, wanting to stomp his foot and scream at the top of his bloody lungs that he wanted her. He knew that it would never be though. He knew that he was stuck. It was as though he was a puppet and while Nik hadn’t come around lately, throwing around his demands, he knew that he would have to choose a side. Of course, if he didn’t choose Nik’s, he would be dead. Lucien just wanted to live. He wanted to have a life. He knew he could never beat the Mikaelsons and he honestly doubted that anyone here could, even with their magics and their objects. Somehow, they always came out on top. And he hated it. “You know if things were different …” He trailed off and sighed, his own fingertips trailing down her delicious body. “If only I met you sooner, if only I didn’t act so hastily,” he muttered. Lucien did make some mistakes along the way but he was now atoning for them so to speak. As much as he wanted to take Nik out, as much as he wanted to believe in what Davina wanted to do, there was nothing that convinced him otherwise. And where would he hand when it came down to it, when if anything, Katherine’s life was on the line? She brought him joy and happiness in her own way. Others might find her difficult, but Lucien cared for her. “If only you didn’t screw over Nik,” he smiled then. They were horrible, the two of them. But what Nik had done to her was far worse. Making her run for centuries, turning her and changing her. Lucien had done horrible things in his life, but his heart wasn’t stone. It was why it was so difficult for him. He felt as though he were in a war with himself when it came to the beauty. And then Aurora, who he still cared for as well. He knew it would never be, he knew she would never love him but he could quite possibly do anything for her. Perhaps that’s just what he was. A sodding sucker. Katherine let her finger tease under Lucien’s chin and then he said those words and she smiled as she shook her head. “If you had met me sooner you still would have been in love with Aurora and I would have still been on the run from Klaus.” Like Klaus would let Lucien be with her even if him and Lucien were on good terms. Klaus hated Katherine with a passion. She was the sole reason that he hadn’t been able to break his hybrid curse. Why he couldn’t make his army so long ago. There would forever be bad blood between the vixen and the hybrid and nothing would ever change that. “I didn’t screw over Nik.” She laid back onto her back and stared up at the ceiling. “I simply survived. I mean, who would simply lay down their life so that Klaus could turn into a oversized dog when he felt like it?” She rolled her eyes. “I was 18. I wanted to live. To love. To find out who I was.” She toyed with the diamonds around her neck as the fire cracked and danced in her eyes. The crazy thing about that was Katherine never exactly got any of that. Her life had been stolen from her more than once. She constantly had to hide and run and there was nothing that ever felt like home to her. She lied until she believed all of those lies. She lost herself and pretended to be everything she never was. It all started with Elijah and Klaus and then she was ruined. “I’m tired of him ruling what happens in my life. I just want to be free.” She said softly. “Don’t we deserve that?” She turned back onto her side to look at him. “We may not be able to kill him but we shouldn’t have to live in fear forever. Why can’t we just live?” Lucien was tired as well, but he knew as long as Klaus was here, then he would never be able to truly live. He felt that perhaps Katherine felt the same way. Of course, the simple answer to that was merely getting rid of him, but it wasn’t so easy. It was as if they were stuck, not able to move. Immobilized is what he made them. “It seems this place is all we have, love.” And they needed to make the most of it. He looked at her before he reached for her and pulled her close, finally pulling her on his lap. “How about we stop talking about our sad stories.” Frankly, there wasn’t a point. It wasn’t as if they could change the past. They couldn’t right their wrongs or change fate. All they had was now and right now, Lucien didn’t want to think about Klaus on a night that was just for them. He wanted to think about only her. Katherine wasn’t willing to dwell on things and ruin her night. She had stolen moments and she was used to it being only that. Having her think about anything more would just ruin everything and she wasn’t about to let that happen. Especially not tonight. She could brood when she was home and Nadia came stumbling in before dawn and she could spill her secrets to her daughter like a normal person. ...Was that was normal was? Apparently when it came to Katherine Pierce and Nadia Petrova it was. Katherine stretched out along Lucien and plastered that wicked smile of hers on her lips. She looked like a satisfied cat, getting exactly what she wanted as she leaned down and plucked softly at his lips. “Forget about everything. Tonight is ours.” She whispered down to him as her lips covered his and she easily got lost in the moment. Everything else was pushed to the back of her mind as she gave herself over to the one person who could easily crush her in this city. She wondered if Lucien knew how easily he could reach out and rip out her heart. Being vulnerable wasn’t something that Katherine let herself be often but here, now, it was worth it. |
