Sydney frowned. She wouldn't rather be talking to anyone else. What led him to that conclusion? Rose and Dimitri didn't even remember her. It wasn't like she was going to be rekindling that friendship any time soon. She was basically an informative roommate at this point which suited her fine because she would never admit that she missed their friendship.
Yet somehow she could admit that she thought of Eddie as a friend. Her "twin" from Amberwood had won her over quickly with his seriousness and attention to detail and general goodness. If anyone was proof that dhampirs had souls, it was Eddie Castile. But the rest of them, they had them too. That point was driven home when Sydney lost her own soul and speaking of, she still had an ethical dilemma that had yet to be solved.
And wasn't Adrian just the best distraction from it?
She could have gone over to Jill to wish the Birthday Girl well but instead she went running after Adrian towards the bar. And yes, she did have to run a bit to keep up with his long legged stride.
When the bartender produced a vodka, Sydney swiped it from the bar. This earned her a well deserved look from the bartender whom she had scolded only moments before for serving people underage. He was likely compelled by Adrian to do so anyway. Adrian was also giving her a look but Sydney quickly walked away with the stolen drink.
As Adrian approached, she bravely took a sip and then immediately made a face. Why did people drink this for fun? How many calories were in it? It tasted like a lot of calories.
"She knows about the party now," Sydney said, gesturing towards Jill. "No need to keep drunk now."
She knew that Spirit took its toll on all of its users but she never saw Lissa getting knock down drunk. She had found some other way to cope with the effects and Sydney might be the only person in this room who expected Adrian to cope as well.
And all the while she couldn't forget that he had just called her the most beautiful woman in the room.
