After Kai’s insane challenge with Clary and Jace he needed a bit of normal in his life. Not the kind of normal that actual normal people might crave, but his kind of normal. He had been human and dipped into his homicidal tendencies during that shit with the shadowhunters and now that he was back to himself, back to being a heretic, he needed his balance. That should have found him at Katherine and Nadias door. Or Claire’s. Even the Seventh Veil. But instead Kai found himself outside of Panpipes. Seriously, he should have been anywhere else right now. He was sure that he was the last person Bonnie even wanted to see. But that didn’t stop him from using his magic and unlocking the door. The little note on the front door saying closed for lunch, back in 30 completely ignored as he let himself in and locked up behind himself. The place had a million different scents but there was one that was strictly familiar to Kai. It filled his nose and all at once it was like he was grounded and he exhaled as he slowly moved around the store like he owned the place. That wasn’t creepy or stalkerish at all right? Wrong. So wrong. If there was one thing that Kai learned from his little conversation with Elena days before it was that he was still obsessed with Bonnie. His thoughts often drifted back to the little witch and he tried to block her out but he couldn’t. It was unhealthy in like every way possible but Kai didn’t exactly care. Nothing about him was healthy or sane to begin with so why start thinking about that now? What he did know is that he wanted her in his life. He missed the constant battles between them. The snark. The anger. The aggression. The heat and tension between them. But it wasn’t like he could come out and openly say that either. She was in love with someone else. Fucking Enzo. But hey, he’d settle for other ways to have her. He made himself comfortable in Bonnie’s office and rested his feet on the desk as he went through a file of her employees. Taking mental notes of the witches because they could come in use later. He didn’t even have to look up to know she was standing in the doorway watching him. “So what do you think about me coming to work here? Seems like all the cool witches are doing it these days.” He spoke without looking up, eying Davina and Kaleb’s names. The sandwich store across from Panpipe was actually pretty good and it’s where Bonnie usually went to pick up her lunch so that she could eat it at work. The whole idea of working at a magic shop wasn’t something she thought she would be doing because nobody really believed in the stuff aside from the people who could actually practice magic. Bonnie was just there to run things, to sell objects that really didn’t mean anything but sometimes she was there to help with magic, too. What she wasn’t here for was the heretic she was trying to get along with. Bonnie wasn’t expecting to walk back into her office to see Kai sitting down in her chair like he was the boss. God. He was so annoying and Bonnie stood there, eyebrows raised, the urge to send him flying across the room with a spell crossing her mind. “You’re not a witch. You’re an abomination, remember?” Bonnie smirked because yes, she said it because she knew it got under his skin since Kai wasn’t born a witch. He was born a siphoner and that was sort of frowned upon in the witchy world. “Do I even want to know why you’re here?” Bonnie asked, putting her food down while realizing that Kai was reading very personal information. It wasn’t hard to snatch it out of his hand, pulling it away from him so that he couldn’t be the nosy little shit that she knew him for. “Because it’s not for a job. You’re not hireable, anyway. There is a no psychopath policy.” Because really, Bonnie couldn’t even see Kai trying to work with a customer without that blowing up in her face. The idea of working at a magic shop was pretty pointless for Bonnie when he actually thought about it, but what else would she do? Play hero for all her little friends? Kai hadn’t lied when he said that thought she deserved more. She did. But this wasn't it. Only half the things in the shop actually meant something and were real. The rest was all smoke bombs and sage for the normals to play around with and pretend they were special. Whatever. It wasn’t his job to point out that Bonnie was better than this. She probably already knew it. His eyes continued to drift over the names in the file as the smell of food hit his nose and finally he looked up at her when she called him an abomination. Rude. There was glare that formed on his face as he looked her over. Yeah, she knew how to get under his skin. She was better at it than most. But she had to remember she had two little nieces who were running around that were the same as him. Did she discriminate against them too? “Maybe, but I’m your favorite abomination.” When she tugged away the file Kai reached for the bag of food, easily distracted as he looked inside for anything good. “You mean you don’t want to be like all the pretty girls and be my sponsor too?” Kai smirked. Cami was helping him in therapy and Zoey had worked out as someone he could talk to. It was weird in a way but Kai was almost growing some. “Been on any new challenges lately?” He grabbed a fry out of the bag and popped it into his mouth as he leaned back in the chair and looked at her. “Gotta say, they’re not exactly the fun kind.” Because Kai had been through torture. And not the great kind he enjoyed either. “Whatever you did to those girls to make them actually talk to you is probably more sickening than surprising. Maybe they’re just a bunch of masochists looking to talk to someone who will understand all the dark and twisted things that happened to them.” Because nobody normal would take the time to get to know Kai Parker who murdered his kid siblings with a baseball bat. Not that it really mattered but Bonnie knew the psychopath she was talking to, the one that she hoped was trying to change into someone worthy of a conversation. “And no, I haven’t been through any challenges. Is that way you came here? To talk about that?” Because getting some insight...probably wasn’t a bad idea because going into something without prior knowledge was really walking into a situation blind. Bonnie kind of wanted to be prepared for anything that could happen. “Is it happening again?” Bonnie hadn’t heard anything. Enzo never mentioned anything and she didn’t think any of the others had made any posts about it. Bonnie frowned as she half wanted to check her phone but was more preoccupied with grabbing her bag of food before Kai could steal half of her sandwich. “Anyone ever tell you that you have grabby hands?” Bonnie couldn’t help the quirking of one of her brows as she sat in the chair across from him - like, seriously. Bonnie was questioning why she didn’t just throw Kai the hell out of her office right about now, or why she was letting him sit in her chair. Kai rolled his eyes. Like seriously, he wasn’t even that bad. He could have been so much worse and Bonnie knew that first hand. Zoey had hated him at first and now even she was giving him a shot, but that was from afar, and Cami? Well, Cami knew his most intimate details. The therapy helped. He needed someone to talk to. Someone who could understand why he was so fucked up to begin with. Someone who was willing to help him change instead of just constantly judging him for his past. Hello, if that never had happened in the first place he wouldn’t have been so fucked up now. But no. Nobody seemed to understand that. Whatever. Their loss. Kai thought he was great. “Is that why you put up with me? Because you’re so damaged?” He arched a brow at her and tilted his head. That familiar look was on his face because it was a legit question. When Elena had talked to him that time on the network she had mentioned that Bonnie was obsessed with him too. So, really, this wasn’t all on his head and there was obviously something there with her too. Would she admit it though? She snatched her food away and he nearly frowned before he caught himself. It wasn’t his and if she didn’t want to share, fine. “Want to see how grabby they can be?” Oh, come on. He couldn’t let that one pass by without going there. He even gave her a little wink as he made himself more comfortable in her chair and just watched her for a moment without saying anything for a long moment. He was thinking about his words and how much he really wanted to tell Bonnie. She wasn’t exactly someone he could talk to but she was who he wanted to talk to, so this made this incredibly difficult. “Yeah, they’re happening again.” He finally answered her seriously. “Got stuck in some creepy house with Clary and that other shadowhunter. Her ex or whatever. We were all human with some crazy ass people trying to kill us.” His face went blank for a moment. “Clary was the only survivor.” “You’re disgusting.” Because that was obvious as Bonnie watched him, trying to figure out what he really wanted because the witch didn’t really have time to talk about Kai’s challenge when it really had nothing to do with her and why did she even ask him about it? Maybe Bonnie was just trying to be friendly, to make small talk with Kai because it was better than wanting to just kill him. “Isn’t Clary your girlfriend or something?” Bonnie had stopped reading Kai’s posts at some point. She remembered Clary vaguely as being some girl who was obsessed with him. It was kind of funny because Bonnie thought that maybe they would both be crazy enough to kill each other which would have cleared Bonnie of all Kai problems. “Well, you’re here so you know whatever happened to you doesn’t matter, right?” The angels had a nag to punish them and put them all through hell. Bonnie didn’t know why she had to be on some snow top mountain with a bunch of wendigos. “I’m just saying don’t let it get to you. The dying…” Bonnie frowned, not wanting to drag this on, to make Bonnie think that she cared because she didn’t. Not fully. Well, okay. Maybe she cared a little. “I mean, remember when we had to kill one another and you came back?” Bonnie asked, smiling because she remembered how she was just thrown into a deathmatch the moment she arrived. Kai rolled his eyes and looked at Bonnie like is this something new? and smirked. No, Kai was completely disgusting but that was Kai and he really didn’t care. Bonnie of all people should have been a hundred percent used to it by now. With him being all obsessed and all. Kai had no limits when it came to Bonnie Bennett and he didn’t try to be something else around her. He didn’t have to be. She knew him. But then that look of disgust that was on Bonnie’s face transferred over to Kai and he shook his head. “God, no.” Clary wasn’t his girlfriend and she hadn’t ever been. Clary might have wanted more but Kai wasn’t sure that he could ever give that to someone. He was kind of with Nadia but he was waiting to see when he would finally fuck that up too. Kai didn’t know how to do relationships. He had never been in a serious one and now things were new and he was just going with the flow at this point. “She was one of those one night stands that went wrong.” Which was probably an accurate way to put things if he really thought about it. She just started acting too clingy afterwards that made her look a little crazy and while he cared about her (though he’d never openly admit that) he knew she was better off without him. Kai licked his lips at her words. It didn’t mattered. None of it was real. He was here and he knew that, but it didn’t erase what happened. Kai had felt it all. He remembered every second. He remembered Jace leaving him there to die and then Kai had attempted to save the Shadowhunter in the end anyway. What the fuck was wrong with him? He was quiet as he shook his head and just watched Bonnie. Watched that little smile of hers. It was cute. “I think it was a little different back then.” Because Kai didn’t care about dying. He had just wanted to make Bonnie suffer then. He had been excited about the death match because he was fucking insane but now, Kai wasn’t that guy. “I was human and I can still feel it all. Every stab, every cut.” He ran his hand over his neck where his throat had been cut. “It felt really real.” he shrugged. He shouldn’t have been talking to Bonnie because she didn’t care but well, he was. And it was almost awkward but he didn’t care. “You just need to be careful.” because if he was pulled eventually that meant that she would be too. “This place is going to put us through hell whether we want it to or not.” Bonnie had already felt that the angels were testing her every day. Testing her patience. Bringing enemies that Bonnie thought she had long left behind only to relive those terrible days where she continuously had to save her friends with magic because she was the only safe option. Silas had wanted to kill Damon. He was going to go after her best friend and Bonnie did what she had to in order to keep Silas on a leash. It was the same thing that she did with Kai to keep him on his. “You do know whether we’re in a challenge or not it’s still dangerous.” Bonnie didn’t know if Kai had met SIlas but she knew that he was more dangerous than Klaus. Silas had the power to get inside of everyone’s head and if he wanted the psychic could control them, could make Bonnie his pet, could make Kai his slave. Bonnie didn’t want that for them, for any of her friends. “Klaus, Silas, there are so many people who could come here wanting a taste of revenge. Silas is one of our bigger problems, Kai. Obviously you’ve seen him on the network. You know what he can do and even though you’re a siphoner you’re not strong enough to face someone like him. I couldn’t even beat him when I had the power of Expression and that’s the strongest magic that exists in our world.” Nothing could be stronger than Expression. Expression was power from sacrifices. From the souls of the dead. “If he gets inside of your head. In any of our heads it’s game over. He could turn the whole city against us and the only reason why he hasn’t is because I stopped him.” And also screwed over Stefan. Bonnie knew she had messed up, had involuntarily turned in a friend, putting Stefan in danger because it was Stefan who Silas came to although in the end it was Bonnie who did the spell. Stefan broke the deal and now Silas wanted him dead. When wasn’t it dangerous. Kai wasn’t stupid, though, he did play that role pretty damn well. He fucked around. Played his games when he was bored and went about his business with all kinds of amusement attached to it. For the most part he tried to stay off the big bad’s radar. Which included Klaus and Silas but they both knew who Kai was very well. Klaus had already warned him that he would use Kai when he wanted and Silas had already tried to threaten him for talking to Amara. Since then he had kept his distance both in person and on the network. There was no point in stirring up unnecessary drama when it wasn’t needed. Even if he did get bored. He knew his limits. But that wasn’t what mattered right now. What mattered was how Bonnie was talking about Silas and putting him in that us column like Kai actually mattered. Like he was part of the Mystic Falls crew or something. When he wasn’t. Not that he didn’t want to be, he just wasn’t accepted so really Silas wouldn’t come for Kai because Kai didn’t mean anything to any of them. Which meant he was safe right? “Wait.” He held up his hand and shook his head. “You’re talking like he would actually come after me when I mean nothing to any of you.” He eyed Bonnie. She seemed worried. “And why did you stop him? You could have given him what he wanted and he would have left you all alone.” But that wasn’t enough for Bonnie. She always had to be in control of the big bads. Like she was in control of him. Now she controlled Silas. Klaus was probably next. “You know, one of these days it’s going to be too much for you to take on, Bonnie. You’re always protecting everyone else and who’s going to protect you?” “Silas does whatever he wants to. If he sees a power play he’ll make it. It’s why he tried so hard to get in my head. He knew that if he could control me he would have an advantage. Who doesn’t want a powerful witch on their side?” Bonnie knew that being a heretic had its perks. Kai was powerful because he could use magic by siphoning his own vampirism. He could easily, in theory, maybe even siphon the immortality right out of Silas and then… “Oh my God.” No. God, no. Bonnie felt her mind go blank because she didn’t think about it, didn’t actually realize how easily Silas could revert everything that Bonnie had done, the stipulation that she placed on Amara would remain. It would always be there unless Silas removed it, or if someone else removed it, if someone managed to siphon the magic that made Amara immortal. “I did it because I knew that Silas wouldn’t have stopped. He would have worked his way through me, through my friends and if he realizes that he can use you to siphon the immortality spell from Amara? He’ll kill us. He will kill me.” Because that’s what Silas probably wanted - to kill Stefan for betraying him and to kill her for the spell. If Kai siphoned Amara back to her human self then there would be no stopping him, the fear of losing Amara would be gone and Bonnie couldn’t have that. She couldn’t let Silas find out about Kai, about anyone who could siphon. The realization hit Bonnie hard and he could see her start to panic. She was right, of course. Silas could easily use him to siphon the immortality spell off of Amara. He could use Lizzie or even Josie too. Which made things all kinds of complicated now that they were both sitting there thinking about it. But Silas would totally pick Kai over the girls because it would be expected of Kai. It would hurt Bonnie too because Bonnie was literally trusting Kai not to be the damaged psychopath that he really was. Holy shit. Kai lowered his head and rubbed at his temples. “If he finds out there’s going to be no stopping him. You know that.” He swallowed and finally got completely serious for the first time ever. “So, what do we do?” Because Kai knew what he would do. It would be to try and use the ascendant to send him away so he couldn’t be used. While keeping the girls sheltered again. But what was Bonnie’s play here? What was she going to do? How was she going to do it? And how much would it affect them all? “I mean, it’s not like me and the twins can just hide away. Even without us around he can just read someone’s mind and find out about the heretics and siphoners.” “He can’t find out.” That was the whole point but how was Bonnie going to keep an eye on three siphoners from someone who could read minds? It was possible that Silas already knew about it but maybe he was just biding his time to do something else, maybe Silas was too focused on his revenge against Stefan to really care about Amara right now. Bonnie knew she was on the list. Silas would come for her eventually because in the end she was responsible for what happened. It was her spell that tied Amara to the doppelgangers. “I don’t know what to do.” Bonnie didn’t even know if she could trust Kai. Would he just betray her? Go to Silas in the end and offer to remove the immortality spell from Amara? Bonnie eyed Kai for a moment, wondering if he would have a motive, if he would decide to choose to be bad instead of working towards being a good person. No. Bonnie didn’t think he would. If Kai betrayed her, again, then there was no saving them. There wouldn't be any of...whatever this was. This odd friendship “You need to stay away from him,” Bonnie said, knowing that if anyone could it would be Kai. The moment he saw Stefan, or anyone who looked like Stefan, the heretic would need to turn away, to get out of there before Silas took over because not even someone like Kai could stop Silas’ compulsion. It wasn’t magic. Silas’ mental abilities couldn’t be siphoned because Silas’ abilities were all from his mind. Everything he did was mental and Kai’s mentality was not the strongest. For the first time in a long time Kai was actually surprised. Bonnie not knowing what to do kind of threw him off for a minute. She was the poster girl for having an answer for everything but even Kai knew everyone had their limits. Maybe Silas was hers. Bonnie couldn’t protect everyone. Maybe she needed help. Was Kai that person to do it? Could he even do it? “Well it’s not like I have a stable relationship with anyone who looks like him.” Thank god for that because really, they were all just as dark and mental as Kai was deep down. They all had issues and Kai kept his distance because he didn’t belong in that crowd. Plus, Stefan had gotten boring over the course of his time here and he just wasn’t much fun to play with anymore. “I’ll keep my distance but I mean, if he wants me it’s not hard for him to find me. We all live in the same complex. All he needs to do is search me out and appear at my door.” He tilted his head. “I’ll do some research and see what I can find out. See if we can block him some way. Worse comes to worse we just steal the cure from Katherine and shove it down his throat.” he eyed Bonnie and frowned. “I won’t let him come after you.” Bonnie knew that they were trying but hearing Kai say that he wouldn’t let anything happen to her was...a little unsettling. She felt herself shiver a bit, not sure if it was because she was so surprised or if maybe some part of her wasn’t ready to be protected by the one person who had nearly pushed Bonnie to offing herself. She knew that it was too good to turn away. If Kai was actually looking out for her then maybe they stood some chance at this. “We need to figure out how to stop him for good.” Bonnie knew that Qetsiyah had done it before. Had trapped Silas - locked him away in a tomb by desiccating him. Bonnie wondered if they could do the same thing. It would just take power. Lots of power to fight against someone with Silas’ power. “So, do your research and I’ll do mine. You can come here if you want. Just don’t...touch anything when you do or talk to any of my employees.” Bonnie didn’t want people to know that she was actually giving the heretic a way into her work place. Right now Bonnie was just trying to gain as much magical momentum as possible. “So, I’m going to be like your dirty little secret?” He eyed Bonnie with a smirk as he rose up from the chair and moved around the desk to her side. Kai wasn’t playing anymore and for once they were actually on the same side here. Hell was definitely freezing over somewhere. “Fine, feed me and I’ll make sure I stay away from your crew of witches.” Maybe. Davina Claire and Kaleb Westphall were still two he was very much interested in. Those two were good to have on your side when you needed it too. “I’ll be back tomorrow. I’ll start my research tonight and bring you what I find.” He stared at Bonnie for just a moment to long. “Till then try not to get on his bad side even more than you already have.” He moved towards the door. “We’ll figure this out.” Because they had caused so much damage together, they were bound to do some good together too. “Promise.” He told her before disappearing out the door. |
