Amelia's comment last night had been bugging John for most of the morning. The Aurors were a rather dour lot - though it wasn't without reason. These were worrisome times (John hesitated in labeling the current disturbances as anything more) and they were the ones tasked with quelling the unrest. Dourness was bound to come into it soon enough. That didn't mean, however, that moments of levity weren't all to the good. Deciding to actually take his lunch break today, John headed out of the Ministry. He was half-tempted to actually eat lunch, but that would have to wait until he'd completed his errand. It was entirely possible he wouldn't have much stomach for lunch afterward, anyway. It wasn't long before he was opening the door to Mick's Eel Supply. It was run by the eel farm at which the girl his mum tried to set him up with worked, and he hoped she was actually at the farm today and not minding the counter. As he perused the offerings - smoked eel, eel fillets, eel pie, eel liquor sauce (which was green and from what he could tell didn't have any eel or liquor in it), as well as the goal of his mission. It looked just as appetizing as he'd expected and he was quite glad that he hadn't eaten yet. Perhaps a packet of chips on the way home - there was always room for chips. After paying for his purchase, he headed to Diagon to Amanuensis Quills, which could usually be counted on to have gift-wrap and such. He returned to the second level of the Ministry, the gift now festooned with a bright pink bow. He waited until Amelia left her desk to deposit the jellied eels directly on top of a mugshot (highly appropriate, he felt) and then slipped away. It was only when his rumbling stomach reached his ears that he realized he'd forgotten to get lunch. Sighing, he reached into his desk drawer for a crumpled packet of crisps that had been there for some time for just such an occasion. The Auror prank war had been begun, anyway, and that's what mattered, wasn't it? |
