More and more No Muggleborn Needs Apply signs are showing up in shops’ windows all across Diagon Alley. While the reasons for banning Muggleborn employment vary from one shop owner to another, the same goes for those who refuses to put up such a sign and will continue to hire Muggleborns. Florean Fortescue, of ice cream fame, is one of those. When he recently advertised in the journals network that he needed a new assistant, Mr Fortescue listed the NEWTs and other qualifications that he required for the position, ending his ad with “The position is otherwise not restricted.” When asked about it, he explained: “I think, ice cream represents something familiar -- for wizards and muggleborns. For a lot of folk -- newer to Diagon Alley, it's a reminder that we're not so different, and that message is lost if we practice exclusionary hiring or service practices. It's never been my policy to hire one group over another; I've no plans to change now. Muggleborns aren't what worry me these days." Mr. Mulpepper, apothecary owner, agrees. “My business is Potions and potions ingredients, not politics. When I hire someone, I want the best Potions NEWTS results, experience, and reliability. If the best candidate is a Muggleborn, then so be it.” The situation is different at Cribbin and Crumb's, where the manager explained how their hiring policies are the same throughout the chain. “I can’t change the rules here in Diagon Alley, it has to be approved in a general meeting and then apply for all our stores. The topic has been brought up and will be discussed at our next assembly.” We can therefore believe that there might be such a No Muggleborn Needs Apply sign before long in grocery stores across Wizarding Britain. |
