Everywhere I look, I seem to see people making this claim or that about Muggleborns. Muggleborns are this, they are that. They are dangerous and divisive. Yet it seems as though hardly anyone gives Muggleborns themselves a say in their place in the wizarding world. The opinions of a minority group which most Muggleborns do not support are taken as fact. Yet this is hardly fair, and I have grown tired of reading people of my heritage being slandered and lambasted at every turn. Yes, I am a Muggleborn, and I find every insult and insinuation that those of Muggle birth are incapable of blending into wizarding society deeply troubling. I have been a part of this world since I was eleven years old. I have held steady, gainful employment in the Ministry of Magic since I left Hogwarts and have been so successful in my work that I have been promoted several times. I am married to a wizard and have a magical child. In short, I have blended in perfectly fine to wizarding society. What's more, I believe that I am the rule rather than the exception to it. I have many Muggleborn friends, all of whom are law-abiding, contributing members to wizarding society. They work hard at their jobs, try to keep themselves safe, and what they are given in return in prejudice and bigotry. All that we ask for is a little fairness and acceptance into the world we have a rightful place to. We do not belong in the Muggle world any more than a pureblood does. We all made a choice at eleven years old, the choice to go to Hogwarts, and as a result, this is where we must stay. In the Muggle world, we have no education and no qualifications. We cannot simply leave the lives we have worked so hard to build because of a few rotten apples. So a small minority of Muggleborns have caused trouble. One Muggleborn stole from a shop of little repute (Knockturn Alley, indeed!). How does this make Muggleborns any different from any other type of wizard? Every day, halfbloods commit crimes. They lie. They get into trouble with the law. My work tells me this. It is a fact. What is more, a minority of purebloods have not only been vocally asking for institutionalised prejudice, but have lawlessly tortured, murdered, and attacked those who don't agree with them. And they say that we're the ones who are causing problems in society. -H.F. |
