John looked at the house in front of them, brow raised. It seemed a bit ... large for one couple, neither of whom seemed to have a permanent job. At least not on officially. From the helpful anonymous tipster, Michael and Maggie Pellegrino apparently were the runners in a dark object smuggling operation. John would bet a month’s pay that the tipster was actually a competitor, wanting to put them out of business. If that were the case, the Aurors were happy to oblige especially since he would guess that the Pellegrinos would also flip on their competitors. Pay was a bitch, after all. He glanced over at Elle, wand at the ready. They’d already decided that he’d go around back, just in case there was a back door. Elle would serve the warrant at the front door while John entered the back, hopefully closing off avenues of escape. Nodding, he moved around toward the back, spotting the door quickly. Once she announced the warrant, using a Sonorus so he could hear, he was to enter. Simple. He hoped. Elle nodded to him as she strode up to the door, knocking loudly. She heard movement inside, but no one came to the door. “Michael and Maggie Pellegrino? This is Elle Abercrombie with the Aurors and the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Open the door.” More movement inside, but no one approached the door. She cast a quick Sonorus and knocked again, louder, “Michael and Maggie Pellegrino. We have a warrant to search the premises for illegal Dark Objects and detection of the use of Dark Magic. Open the door or I will be forced to break it down.” No one came to the door, and Elle cast a silent Alohamora.. Nothing. “For the last time, open the door,” Elle frowned. She really didn’t enjoy the breaking down the door of someone’s home part, but that generally came with the territory. “We are now entering the premises. Please place your wands on the ground and put your hands behind your head.” She cast quietus and then grounded herself as she aimed her wand at the door. “Protego,” to protect herself from wood shards and then, “Confringo!” John had unlocked the back door once he heard her go through the announcement once. Casting a quiet Protego on himself, he eased it open, stepping into what appeared to be a kitchen. He could easily hear the second order to open the door as he looked around quickly. Seeing no one, he shut the door behind him - no sense in making it easy if one were to run - and checked the pantry. A noise down a hallway told him where one, at least, was. There was a pounding, as someone ran up the stairs and he swore. Casting his own Sonorus, he managed to say, “One’s going upstairs!” before he moved into the front room, wand drawn. The sight of the man with his own wand drawn made John want to hex him then and there. “Throw down your wand and put your hands in the air!” Elle heard John’s announcement as the dust settled in the front entryway, and sure enough she saw feet of one of the Pellegrino’s disappearing up the stairs. Not bothering with sonorus, simply because she didn’t waste time, Elle yelled back to her fellow Auror, “In pursuit! Secure the other one!” She sprinted up the stairs, two at a time, and stopped at the landing to assess which way to go. The hallways had at least 6 doors and she didn’t have time to bust open every one. Glancing the other way though, where there were another 3 doors, she spied one was slightly ajar. Wand raised, she edged closer to it. She could hear rummaging inside and after listening long enough to realize it was a rummaging sound and not preparing for an Auror to come busting through the door, that was exactly what Elle did. She threw the door open with her left shoulder, wand brandished, “Expelliarmus!” John heard Elle go after who he presumed was the wife even as he watched the man’s eyes for a tell that he was going to move. “One last chance - drop your wand and -” John didn’t have time to finish as he saw the slight narrowing of eyes that belied his opponent was going to strike back. Or try to. “Expelliarmus!” he yelled, darting out of the way of Pellegrino’s hex. The curse hit a shelf off to his right, exploding in a way that told John that there had indeed been some sort of dark object there. Pellegrino clearly hadn’t been expecting John to have attacked first and so didn’t get out of the way. His wand went flying and John followed that up with a Petrificus Totalus which, since Pellegrino had attempted to dive for cover, only clipped it. It did enough, though, and Pellegrino went down. “Incarcerous.” John watched in satisfaction as Pellegrino was trussed up like a pig waiting for the spit. “Abercrombie! Got your man?” he called, only to be greeted by silence. Making sure his Pellegrino was secured, he raced upstairs to find ... no one. “Buggering hell.” |
