![]() There have been murmurs of concern from some of the general public since the article of the Warbeck Community Theatre’s Importance of Being Merlin was released last Thursday. Rather than being about the celebrity of Celestina Warbeck attending the opening herself or the ability of the cast to put on a good show, I’ve actually heard the majority of the worries voiced being about Rupert Robinson’s bloodline. The idea that some people are questioning his views and credibility because of the fact that he’s Muggleborn seems completely absurd. I, for one, actually think it’s fantastic a Muggleborn was able to combine his passion for the theatre arts with wizarding heritage. Sadly the visual and performing arts education of the average wizard or witch is severely lacking, and if it weren’t for students willing to go completely outside the usual curriculum we’d have much less in the way of trained talent than the Muggle world in subjects that are equally as important here as there. Getting word out about programs such as the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts is extremely important. I’m a Muggleborn myself and never actually heard of such a thing when attending Hogwarts - it’s possible this is only because I never expressed interest in the subjects, but even if I had, it would have fallen on the professors’ shoulders to pass the word along to me that such a thing existed, as Professor Sprout did with Mr. Robinson. As for a Muggleborn knowing the Importance of Being Merlin - I don’t think I can properly articulate the feeling of awe that we feel when we’re told about Hogwarts for the first time. Being a wizard or witch is who we are, no matter our blood, and while we may not have the family ties that go back hundreds of years in magical tradition, I can almost guarantee we appreciate our abilities as much as any other bloodline there is. Merlin is a figure amongst Muggle tales as well as magical, and I have much more confidence in a trained Muggleborn graduate of the WADA to put on a fantastic interpretation and performance of the show than any Purist historian who will sit back and critique it without so much as considering the subject matter and skill of the director and entire cast and crew. I’m thrilled to see what they produce, and the show itself will be what determines it’s success, not the blood that happens to be running through any one person’s veins. ~ Lily Potter Tutor & Apprentice Potioneer Gryffindor, Class of 1978 |
