The sudden change in his whispered tone caused Darla to draw back slightly in her chair. For a moment she froze, a startled expression on her face as she stared at him like a deer caught in a pair of headlights. It didn't take long for the surprised look in her eyes to turn to fear. He hadn't even been that angry sounding with her and yet to Darla, who was trying so hard to have everyone like her, it was as if he had raised his voice and yelled at her.
