asami Lately, Asami was not a fan of being idle. Being idle led to thinking, and thinking led her mind toward Future Industries, and thoughts of Future Industries led to headaches. She had been serious when she "talked shop" with Reeve, about the potential of bringing Future Industries' tech to the archipelago, but the more she thought about it, the less sure she was about the entire thing. It was both that and a faint feeling of needing to get out for a while that had her headed home and changing immediately after work, only to hop on her moped and head to C-District. Her destination? The Greasy Spoon. She certainly was not going for the food, however--being one who was still something of a food snob, she would never willfully eat its greasy offerings unless she were doing it to be polite to hosts. Upon arrival, she pull off her helmet and walked into the establishment, ignoring the eyes on her back. Instead, she moved toward the counter. "Korra? How close to the end of your shift are you?" teamavatar Korra also was not a fan of thinking these days. Or really thinking too much, because no one could stop thinking altogether. Still she spent a lot of time sparring and working and pretending that there wasn't anything else to worry about. She didn't talk much about how she went back to her room and tried to meditate. She tried to go into her Avatar state, hoping that maybe if she could, a solution would present itself. She didn't know how, but Aang was able to do amazing and unbelievable things as the Avatar. Some of that had to be in Korra too. Except it didn't go anywhere. She was still cut off from that spiritual side of her, which led to more frustration and that dark feeling of utter failure. So she drowned it out with every day life and keeping busy. It was a slow day at work and Korra was not especially dignified when it came to being bored. Like Bolin, she was more likely to moan and groan about being bored and be dramatic, but her otherwise cheerful personality made her boss and coworkers put up with the complaining. She was currently rolling up silverware and looked up when Asami came in, surprised. Not to see her, that was welcome, but this was so not her kind of place. Korra looked over at her boss and he shrugged. Her smile was instant and bright and if she could hug him, she would, but you know, personal boundaries. She put her hands on the counter and vaulted over it easily. "Let's go before he changes his mind! What're you doing slumming it over here?" asami She lifted her eyebrows in mild surprise that Korra was allowed to get away with vaulting over the counter, but, then again, this place wasn't Kwong's Cuisine. Asami offered her friend a smile. "I needed to get out and clear my head," she admitted. Inclining her head to the side, she offered a smile. "Follow me." The helmet was shifted to the crook of her other arm as Asami moved out of the establishment. Her stomach briefly clenched at the idea that she really should have bought something, but she decided to owe it back to the Greasy Spoon some other time--maybe when she could use a pick-me-up in the form of a dessert. Their ice cream surely couldn't be as grease-filled as their food, right? The moped had been left untouched in the brief time she was inside (that having been a concern, because, hey, increase in crime lately), but she did not show any sort of reaction to that. Instead, Asami tossed Korra her spare helmet. "Want to go for a ride?" Without waiting for a response, she was already pulling on her own helmet. "It's been a while since I just drove aimlessly." The moped couldn't handle two passengers all the time, but this once would be fine. teamavatar "I only had fifteen minutes left," Korra admitted when they walked outside. They could have sat there talking for the next fifteen minutes, with her getting steadily more antsy to go, or he could've just gotten her out of his hair. He chose the latter route, lucky for them. She didn't mind that Asami didn't argue with her about the slum part. It wasn't a bad place to work or eat, but it definitely wasn't chic or fancy. When Korra first met Asami, she assumed she was going to be a snob, but she turned out to be really down to earth instead. She wondered how Asami got there, and if she knew it was on her moped, she might've checked outside anyway. Rise in crime, yeah, and Korra was always ready for a fight. No one tried to make trouble around the restaurant, and sometimes she wished they would. "Are you sure it'll hold up?" She studied the moped curiously and then took the helmet. "Of course you're sure, you're Asami." Korra shrugged and smiled, and it was that simple to her. Still she was heavier than Asami, much more blocky and solid, so they'd have to see how that went. She put on the helmet. "Really missing one of your cars right about now." She knew Asami felt the same way without it needing to be said, and for more complicated reasons than 'it's easier to get around in.' asami Fifteen minutes was still a good amount of time, but Asami wasn't going to argue it. It was her boss's decision, after all. "It's fine," she assured Korra with a smile, swinging her leg around in order to sit on the vehicle. Bracing it with both feet on the ground, she inclined her head a bit at the mention of her vehicles. "Yeah." Would be nice to have that back right about now. Asami shook her head. "I've been thinking of asking for it once I have enough, ah, points." What a strange prospect. "I've been thinking a lot about Future Industries lately," she admitted. That could have been a good or bad thing, really. She waited for Korra to get on the seat before she'd start the moped. "Any particular place you want to ride?" teamavatar "Points, yeah. I keep hoping my competitive spirit will kick into gear so I can get more of those." Korra wasn't entirely sure what she would save up to. Maybe the car for Asami. She thought it was possible Naga could happen, but at the same time she didn't want to hope for something like that. Naga was her best friend, with her since she was a child, and being without her was difficult. They could both easily fit on her and ride around town, although it wasn't as classy as Asami's car by far. Korra was usually very competitive and loved games, especially winning them. "Thinking about it like you want to find a way to keep doing stuff here, or thinking about it like dwelling?" Korra got on the moped and pulled the helmet on securely. "I guess anywhere but here isn't the best answer. Also, sorry if I smell like friers." After working at the Greasy Spoon, it started to feel natural she carried the scent of french fries and grills. "Somewhere scenic and not populated with jerks?" Her customers tried her patience. asami "You just have to find the right arena," she assured Korra. "Or come up with one on your own." Or submit herself to interviews, but, as Asami recalled, Korra hadn't been all that big a fan of them when she first came to Republic City. "Both, I suppose," Asami admitted. It was hard to say. "With the world expanding, it would be a smart business move to bring in a company that specializes in vehicular transportation, you know, to meet the needs of the people. It's just that there are...complications to it." To say the least. Asami grinned. "D-District, then." A could have worked, or E, but D was closer. Asami revved the engine before they took off. teamavatar "Come up with my own arena? That's a possibility?" Korra wasn't sure she'd want to do something like that. If other people ended up being brought in and got hurt, she'd consider that her fault, her responsibility. Something like pro bending though could be fun, it was relatively safe, except no one had bending outside of her. Korra had excellent balance, but her hands went naturally around Asami's waist just in case as they started to go. It would be better for the moped in general if they stayed connected. She also smelled ridiculously good, so much better than french fries. "Complications like not having the money or engineers or the designs themselves?" She spoke closely to Asami's ear so she didn't have to yell and hurt Asami's ear and her throat in the process. asami "Yeah. They're called special arenas. You can choose what you want to do, who you do them with, and how great the risk for some extra income. I haven't done them myself, but I have seen footage of some of the others." Including one she would much rather forget involving her colleague, Rachel, and her superhero friend. That made her frown briefly, but she quickly wiped it off her face. No use dwelling. There was a strange feeling in her belly as Korra put her hands where they went, but Asami ignored it, thinking it was just the jitters of needing to get out and riding. "All of the above," she admitted. "And there are technologically minded individuals here, but they wouldn't be, um, Sato-brand vehicles if I went that route." Running a business was sounding a lot more difficult than even she could imagine. teamavatar "There's no other benders here otherwise I'd do a pro-bending match. It's been a long time." Korra was delighted the first time she came across pro-bending. She was sheltered before that and didn't get much of a chance to show off her bending skills to most people. She got plenty of attention after she started, and not all of it good … but there was nothing quite like the sound of a roaring crowd. She wouldn't mind getting that again. "I wouldn't want to do anything fatal." No money was worth that. Sometimes people got hurt in pro-bending, like getting the wind knocked out of them. A little of Asami's hair went in her face, and she probably should have minded, but it was ridiculously soft. How did she do this? Korra was baffled by how the elegant racer made everything look so easy. A little envious too, but they all had their strengths. "I don't know, maybe they don't need to be. You could do a partnership instead." She almost pointed out that Asami didn't need to do the exact same thing her father did, but it sort of went without saying, and it was still a sensitive subject. "Maybe the people around here could give you new ideas too." asami "There's no saying they couldn't learn. Some arenas grant abilities we wouldn't get otherwise." In theory, Asami herself could have bending abilities for such an arena. Now that was an exciting thought, and she couldn't hide the grin. "You don't have to. You could even fight a bunch of monsters if you wanted. A lot of people do that." "I talked to my coworker about it, but..." As she trailed off, Asami sighed again. It was nothing against Korra, but Korra also did not grow up in the corporate world. She didn't get this as much as Asami herself didn't understand the Water Tribes' culture. "It's complicated." Yeah, that worked. "We'll see," she settled on, totally uncommitted to answering either way. "I guess I did think about getting enough incentive points to bring in Republic City, but that's...well, that's a lot." teamavatar "You think? That could be fun. I'd have an unfair advantage since I know what I'm doing, but it's more fun than scary." Korra just wouldn't want to be responsible for one of those painful and terrifying ones. Pro-bending was a sports game. That might be more fun for everyone, even. She grinned at the thought too and squeezed Asami playfully. "Maybe you'd get some bending too. What would you choose?" She didn't think much about whether Asami wished she was a bender or not. In Korra's mind, who wouldn't want to be? Korra was going to ask more, but she knew she didn't know much about the corporate world. She wasn't going to be able to give very good advice on it. In her tribe they didn't have anything like that. Most people were barter shoppers, and everyone helped out. Not like Republic City. "I didn't realize we could do that…." There was a lot she was just putting blinders on about. That was Korra, rarely seeing the bigger picture because she was too focused on the details. "Do you think we could save up the points together and both use them?" asami "There are some training simulations for other sports at the Training Center rooms," Asami added. "You could test out a bunch of them first and then see what you're interested in pursuing." The squeeze took her a little by surprise, and she decided to ignore that fluttering feeling again. "Ah, well...both of my parents are of Fire Nation descent, so I suppose I would be a firebender." That was ironic, considering that her mother was killed by firebenders. Use the points together, huh? Asami gave a thoughtful hum. "I don't see why we couldn't," she answered honestly. teamavatar "I might have to do that. I never thought of doing my own programming." Korra didn't have the technical know-how, most of the time, and since her style was reactionary more than actionary, she went with the flow. People normally gave her tasks, and she completed them. It was a very simplistic way of being, considering she was the Avatar and should be a leader in her own right, but she was still adjusting to that. Too often people made decisions for her. "And that probably wasn't comforting because of ... yeah, sorry." Another thing she did a lot, talking without thinking. She knew what happened to Asami's mother, it was the driving force behind her father's betrayal. "So we should do that. We can save up. Besides, people here would like Republic City. It's a lot better than this place." She didn't want to insult the area, but, well, it was absolutely true. Despite all the bad things that happened to her there, she really liked Republic City. asami Asami shook her head. "Don't worry about it." She had come to terms with her mother's death a long time ago, and, given her support of pro-bending teams, she did not hold the grudge against benders that her father did. Had? What fate would befall her father in her future, she wondered? "They say you die for real if you're not in the archipelago," Asami pointed out. "You might have a lot of people staying here for that alone." teamavatar Korra took Asami at her word about that and nodded, although she'd be smart enough not to bring it up again if she could help it. Whether she came to terms or not, no one liked being reminded of that. She wondered sometimes what would happen to Asami's father too. While there was no love lost with Korra and him, he did try to kill her and several of her friends, she worried for Asami's sake. Korra frowned at that point, but in the end, it didn't really matter to her. "We would die for real back home, I'm not really banking on being resurrected." She was the Avatar, she led multiple lives. But what if she died there? That had to be it for them. "Well we'll worry about that when we get there. It'll take a lot of points before then." She smiled and looked around as they drove. "Thanks for picking me up." |
