Mary stared at the envelope on the dresser. She'd been staring at it all afternoon, and wasn't any closer to making a decision. She wasn't sure she wanted to know if she was having a son or daughter. Either way she was worried about how she would react - would she be relieved if it was a boy? Was that a betrayal of her daughters, if she ever had any? She had grown up with the knowledge that everyone had wished her to be a boy, and it had coloured every second of her life. She was determined that would never happen to her daughters.
She sighed, glancing over at Matthew as she absently stroked her stomach. "What do you think?" she asked. "Should we look?"
