Mary smiled at Anna's use of Bates' first name. She'd referred to Matthew by his given name to third parties several times. Manners were so relaxed in this place that no one passed any notice. But it was hard to refer to him so formally in company, when they were used to not being formal at all in private.
"I'm very glad to hear it," she said. "Yes, we were reunited easily enough. He's gone to fetch tea."
She sighed, shaking her head. "It is never dull here, that's for sure. Though how they are to repair the ship with all this confusion, I don't know."
