Despite the fact that Martha Jones, beloved family maid, did turn out to be counting down the days to his death, and fully intending to impart the death upon him herself if need be, he did miss the days when Martha was there. Perhaps he did miss Martha, too, but he found it difficult most times to be overly charitable towards her memory. Hapless though she might have been, and friendly enough as the Doctor turned out, John Smith is not terribly forgiving when it comes to plotting his murder with quite as much nonchalance as she held about it.
The presence of Martha, however, he could freely say he missed. Lovely as Anna is about turning down his room and such, she's still not nearly the same as a personal, life-long maid who tended to know the exact temperatures of the things you preferred, was always on call, and did very important other duties besides the varying sorts of tidying Anna offered.
Like making food and serving it up whilst he prepared lectures.
At this point he'd be happy just to have food made for him, in fact. He'd never been all that skilled in the kitchen to begin with, given how it was women's work for the most part...but in this kitchen he found himself especially hopeless. Nothing was remotely familiar and understandable in it, and oftentimes when hunger drove him here and there wasn't something conveniently prepared (most of the time) he ended up grabbing whatever looked prepared and edible from its container. It was both shameful and unsatisfying.
Yet, once again, to his frustration he found nothing prepared and nothing remotely...cookable. If only Martha were here, she'd be able to use all of this.
